Val H. | 22143 comments Just for clarification Tim. The Wiki page doesn't list the artist who sang the song in the film. Do you want us to do a bit of a research to check (sorry, once a librarian, always a librarian)? e.g.

1941 - Lady Be Good - "The Last Time I Saw Paris" - Jerome Kern (music); Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics)

https://secondhandsongs.com says the first recorded version was by Kate Smith in 1940 but as she was not in the film, I'm assuming you'd want Ann Sothern's version from the film (never released as a recording - hope she wasn't dubbed). .

Again, apologies for being a pedant and a lover of classic songs.

message 958: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22143 comments Okay, turns out it shouldn't be a problem. I just happened to light on the sole anomaly. The Youtube clip of Ann Sothern in the film says:

"Kern was so upset at winning the Academy Award for "Best Original Song" with a song that was not written for the film (and that had been published and recorded before the film was released), he petitioned the Motion Picture Academy to change the rules. Since then, a nominated song has to have been written specifically for the film in which it is performed."

Ignore everything I said, full steam ahead.

Val H. | 22143 comments Turns out we did do this theme once before:

89. Oscar nominated songs (must be the version which featured in the film soundtrack) - Mondo

As we have no access to the old Zon threads, we'll never know what was nominated or what won. Well deserving of another go! Thanks Tim.

theDuke | 6491 comments And i've got another theme, but will check first whether it's been done before. For now, I'll leave it floating here, 'otherwise I'll forget about it:

Theme *** - "Self Titled Songs" - Bands who released a self titled track, i.e. Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden. Has to be the band themselves performing it, so no covers. - theDuke - theDuke

Edit: Doesn't look like that we have, it seems.

No worries, Val. I think (from memory) that all the winners are linked to other wiki pages on which the artist who sang the song in the film is mentioned, so hopefully it shouldn't be an issue. There's nearly 90 years worth of songs anyway, so plenty of choice.

Great idea. It's a question whether there's sufficient to go around. If you reckon there are, go for it, or if not maybe extend the theme to any song, the title of which which has been used by a later band for their name (Deep Purple is an example of the latter)

Edit: Just found this, so it's doable. https://www.discogs.com/lists/Eponymo...

PS: Val, you mentioned a Brian Wilson cover of another artist's material titled with his name. I might allow that one, as that hadn't occurred to me. Nor did i think it through, when i stipulated no covers by other bands/artists of songs nominated...which of course would disqualify the nomination anyway....it has to be same name for both the song AND the artist! So technically, Brian Wilson doing a cover of a song bearing his name, would qualify...so you can use it Val! :)

Isabella | 1370 comments As a lurker on here and one who isn't much into music, may I suggest a "Hall of shame" list, please? I'm thinking of "stalker" songs. The creepy "always watching you", sort and the "I'll get you and keep you, whatever you want" sort. Maybe reversing the usual idea, so the "winner" is the worst offender? Of course, it may already have been done but I thought it might be interesting.

Val H. | 22143 comments Great to see you here Isabella and a worthy idea. I'll add it.

Theme 439 - 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the National Gallery, so songs about art; can be the name of a painting, or an artist's name, or simply themed around the subject - Tim
Theme 440 - Wildcard Round 19
Theme 441 - The paper bit in the middle - two songs from a particular record label, not a gigantic major, but ones including those which began as Indies and grew large (eg, Island, Atlantic, Virgin, Motown), imprints set up by majors for a specific music genre (eg, Harvest, Vertigo), vanity labels that put out records by artists other than the ones behind the imprint (eg, Apple, Manticore), classic old school Indies (eg, Sun, Stax, Immediate, Trojan), newer Indies (eg, Rough Trade, Small Wonder, Subpop, Third Man, Sympathy For The Record Industry, and a host of others) - Tim
Theme 442 - "Killer Tunes" -Songs with Kill, Killed, Killing, Killer in the title - Collette
Theme 443 - The Sky's the limit - songs with the word Sky/Skies in the title or the band name - Brass Neck
Theme 444 - Location! Location! Location! - Song titles containing any of the words Under/Over/Between/Next/By/Inside/Outside/Below/Above/Beneath.
Must refer to a location or position, for example "By the tree" is good, "By The Time" is not good. - SussexWelsh
Theme 445 - Back to back - Any two songs which you think go together well played one after the other - Fishy Jim
Theme 446 - Aye Aye Captain - Song titles containing one (or more) of the homophones Aye, Eye, I, and Ai - Helen
Theme 447 - "Pass the Dutchie" - Royalty. Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, Dukes, Dutchesses, Counts, Countesses etc - Sera

Theme 445 - Back to back - Any two songs which you think go together well played one after the other - Fishy Jim

Are we going to vote for a pair of songs because they fit well together? If so, should we be nominating two pairs of songs or is that going to be too unwieldy? If we vote for each song individually, isn't that getting away from the premise that they work well back-to-back? Clarification needed - at least by me.
