1941 - Lady Be Good - "The Last Time I Saw Paris" - Jerome Kern (music); Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics)
https://secondhandsongs.com says the first recorded version was by Kate Smith in 1940 but as she was not in the film, I'm assuming you'd want Ann Sothern's version from the film (never released as a recording - hope she wasn't dubbed). .
Again, apologies for being a pedant and a lover of classic songs.

"Kern was so upset at winning the Academy Award for "Best Original Song" with a song that was not written for the film (and that had been published and recorded before the film was released), he petitioned the Motion Picture Academy to change the rules. Since then, a nominated song has to have been written specifically for the film in which it is performed."
Ignore everything I said, full steam ahead.

89. Oscar nominated songs (must be the version which featured in the film soundtrack) - Mondo
As we have no access to the old Zon threads, we'll never know what was nominated or what won. Well deserving of another go! Thanks Tim.

Edit: Doesn't look like that we have, it seems.

No worries, Val. I think (from memory) that all the winners are linked to other wiki pages on which the artist who sang the song in the film is mentioned, so hopefully it shouldn't be an issue. There's nearly 90 years worth of songs anyway, so plenty of choice.

Theme *** - "Self Titled Songs" - Bands who r..."
Great idea. It's a question whether there's sufficient to go around. If you reckon there are, go for it, or if not maybe extend the theme to any song, the title of which which has been used by a later band for their name (Deep Purple is an example of the latter)
Edit: Just found this, so it's doable. https://www.discogs.com/lists/Eponymo...

PS: Val, you mentioned a Brian Wilson cover of another artist's material titled with his name. I might allow that one, as that hadn't occurred to me. Nor did i think it through, when i stipulated no covers by other bands/artists of songs nominated...which of course would disqualify the nomination anyway....it has to be same name for both the song AND the artist! So technically, Brian Wilson doing a cover of a song bearing his name, would qualify...so you can use it Val! :)

Are we going to vote for a pair of songs because they fit well together? If so, should we be nominating two pairs of songs or is that going to be too unwieldy? If we vote for each song individually, isn't that getting away from the premise that they work well back-to-back? Clarification needed - at least by me.
