What are you reading in July '14?
The Riddle-Master of Hed is one of my favorites too.I've just started The Thousand Names. Good so far.
I am half way through the Tower Lord. So far, it is amazing... and the sense of impending doom unavoidable. Already I think the wait for the third book will be agonizing.
Mistborn: The Final Empire was everything I'd hoped for. I laughed, I cried, I smashed my head against the wall, so all in all a good time. So this month I will be carrying on with the 2nd and 3rd books of the series. I'm already decently far in The Well of Ascension and love it.
Still trying to finish The Hobbit, the reading style is okay. And the book plot is okay. But the book doesn't make me jump for joy. So this one might takee me a while.I am also reading YA High fantasy called The Iron Butterfly, i love the writing style and the book overall, but at times, I find the main character very sterotypical for YA. If have never read YA, then I would recommend it highly.
And lastly I started The Emperor's Soul By Brandon Sanderson... Usually when I start Sanderson book, I devour it, because i can't get enough. I just started so maybe I haven't go to the meat of the plot. or the plot arc.

The second book is a little slow, but the third book hero of ages. is a 700 page thrill ride. enjoy!
Wow, where to start? So many things I want to read but not sure I can get them all in this month. I'm sure everyone can figure out why I want to read the Tower Lord and The Shadow Throne. I finished The Red Knight last month so I need to make time for The Fell Sword and I polished off The Dragon's Path on June 30 so The King's Blood and The Tyrant's Law are on my read list. Those should make for a good start.
Marcus wrote: "Daniel wrote: "Mistborn: The Final Empire was everything I'd hoped for. I laughed, I cried, I smashed my head against the wall, so all in all a good time. So this month I will be carry..."What about The Alloy of Law? I never hear anyone talk about it.
I finished The Riddle-Master of Hed and I am waiting for the others to catch up for the discussion :) I also finished Remnant Population. Next I will start Ancillary Justice and Assassin's Apprentice
Halfway through The Wise Man's Fear. I need to finish it soon so I can start Elantris which is next month's selection for my library's Fantasy Book Club. And I would love to have time to reread Blood Song before I start the sequel. Don't think that's going to happen. It's tough working at a library and seeing all these great books on the shelves everyday!
Finally broke down and put The Way of Kings in my Kindle. I'm favorably impressed. From someone who has been compared to Robert Jordan, who I despise, the story is relatively coherent and interesting without getting bogged down in trivia like the Wheel of Time did.
Just finished The Left Hand of God. I was impressed at the start and through the middle, but it really fell apart for me at the end, and the battles at the end (the large-scale ones) were pretty meh. I feel it could have been a great book (instead of just a good one).
L.G. wrote: "Just finished The Left Hand of God. I was impressed at the start and through the middle, but it really fell apart for me at the end, and the battles at the end (the large-scale ones)..."I also disliked the end. Meh sums it up.
I just started with "Last Argument of Kings". So far its a thriller of a ride and keeps up the hype of the series.

I usually don't like start an unfinished series, when there so many more books with finished series or partially finished series that I have not read yet...
Like the Wheel of Time or
The Ascendance Trilogy or
The Rangers Apprentice or
The Farseer Trilogy or
The Broken Empire Series
I ususally won't start an unfinished series, unless it almost finished. Or I really want to read it.
I've just finished Alif the Unseen.
I didn't enjoy Alloy as much as the other Mistborn books. I did enjoy Emperor's Soul.

210 pages still to go of The Wise Man's Fear. Will this thing ever end? Enjoying it but it is taking me a long time. Are some of the parts a little long? Eld road bandits? Felurian? Tempi? The Adem? I have to keep reminding myself that this is Kvothe's story and he can tell it as he pleases. And Rothfuss can edit it as he thinks best!
Andrew wrote: "Today I started The Eye of the World, the first book of "Wheel of Time" cycle."Good luck in reading the entire series in a year! I hope you do it!
I just finished reading The Returned. I wouldn't say it's a bad book, but not a very interesting one either, besides the fact that dead people return to life just like when they passed away, and no, they're not zombies. Maybe since I haven't lost a person dear to me this book didn't reach me as i would with other persons.

Felur..."I had the same issues with The Wise Man's Fear. Love the first half of the book, but was really displeased with the second half, pretty much from Felurian on. That said after he leaves the Adem I found a brief return to form before the book ended, which gives me great hope for the third one.

Thanks. I want to be optimistic.
I finished reading Tower Lord, sequel to Blood Song. It both delivers and disappoints. Here's my review
I'm still trying to work my way through Darkest Hour despite stalling about 50-75 pages in twice now. It's such a disappointment after the previous book in the series.Beyond that, I have a list of To-Read that's a mile long. I've been in the mood for some old-school ~200 pg sword & sorcery or sword & planet. Just reread Elric of Melnibone and A Princess of Mars and loved 'em. Wish I could find more recent novels with that sort of economy of language and breakneck pacing. If anyone has any recommendations, I'm open!
Aside from that, I'll probably start The Riddle-Master of Hed since I haven't read it in years, and it's on our list for the month.
James, have you tried the Drenai Saga by David Gemmell? That is around 11 fast paced 200ish pagers that are pretty good.
Daniel wrote: "Tom wrote: "210 pages still to go of The Wise Man's Fear. Will this thing ever end? Enjoying it but it is taking me a long time. Are some of the parts a little long? Eld road ban..."Is it still worth reading though? I haven't read it yet, but I've been moving it up my list.
Wrapped up The Horror Stories of Robert E. Howard and am moving on to Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, the book that is winning all of the awards. Ever.
L.G. wrote: "Daniel wrote: "Tom wrote: "210 pages still to go of The Wise Man's Fear. Will this thing ever end? Enjoying it but it is taking me a long time. Are some of the parts a little long?..."Oh yes, very much worth reading! Just finished it last evening. I needed to finish it in order to start on another book for a book club I am in. If I hadn't felt so rushed I probably wouldn't have complained as I did above. Can't wait for the next book! Anyone have an idea when it will be published?
Im hoping to read and finish Malice
Tower Lord
Prince of Fools
The Grim Company
Among Thieves
The Way of Kings
Promise of Blood
I dont think i will be able to finish them all but i will give it a good go
Tom wrote: "210 pages still to go of The Wise Man's Fear. Will this thing ever end? Enjoying it but it is taking me a long time. Are some of the parts a little long?..."I couldn't put it down. It took me a while to get past the first 100 pgs or so of The Name of the Wind, but after that, I sped through the remainder of it and all of The Wise Man's Fear in just a couple of days. I'd say the only time I felt a little bogged down in TWMF was during his time in the fae realm.
Sam wrote: "James, have you tried the Drenai Saga by David Gemmell? That is around 11 fast paced 200ish pagers that are pretty good."
Haven't heard of them, I'll give them a shot. I thought I remembered reading some of his books in the 90s, but I can't seem to find them now. I thought they were Arthurian or based on Scottish legends, but maybe I'm confusing him with someone else. I'll check Legend out.
L.G. wrote: "Daniel wrote: "Tom wrote: "210 pages still to go of The Wise Man's Fear. Will this thing ever end? Enjoying it but it is taking me a long time. Are some of the parts a little long?..."Yeah definitely still worth reading. It's only a couple hundred pages that I didn't enjoy as much. And those story lines feel slightly disconnected from the rest of the book, so I'm sure the last book will return to form.
Now reading Elantris. About page 150 or so. The pace of the story is increasing and the plot is getting interesting. Could turn out to be a good one!
I'm working on A Crown of Swords and Prince of Thorns. I hope to get back to Elantris maybe later this month. I'd also like to get to Promise of Blood and Before They Are Hanged as I already own them. I hope to maybe get to Words of Radiance too but that will probably be another month or two.

I'm re-reading Richard K. Morgan's A Land Fit for Heroes. I am on The Cold Commands now. The final book comes out in October, so... I am actually enjoying it more than the first time.
Jillian wrote: "Malice by John Gwynne. Five Stars for sure."Malice and its sequel are my favourite books I've read this year! Which is impressive considering I've finished The Lies of Locke Lamora and the Mistborn trilogy in the last little while (and by "last little while" I mean I finished the third Mistborn about literally ten minutes ago, my eyes are still watering from the tears)
I got a couple of Vorkosigan novels for Father's Day. Currently reading Captain Vorpatril's Alliance. Not sure I want to read the previous book in the series. I thought she should have left Miles to his HEA after Cetaganda, and followed the more comic adventures offered by Ivan.
Trying some Bernard Cornwell...
finished Assassin's Apprentice which was awesome. Midway through The Call of the Wild and then I either start The Amulet of Samarkand or A Discovery of Witches
I finished Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It was ok. I enjoyed the beginning and the end, but the middle was boring. Now I'm starting Oryx and Crake, but I also want to reread The Giver soon before the movie comes out. It's been so long since I read it.
I finally finished Assassin's Apprentice, really absorbing stuff. Here's my review. I'm going straight on to Royal Assassin right now; who needs sleep anyways.
I just finished Grave Peril (a rather busty read), and plan on reading The Riddle-Master of Hed. I'm also reading the next in the Dresden Files, Summer Knight.
