When did you read it? When you read it was it new or do you think it had been out for a while? Paper or ebook?

I'm 90% certain it was an Ebook, and it was probably 2 years ago I read it... it seemed very modern at the time but I can't say that with 100% certainty. I'll still go with the assumption that it was released in the 2000s and isn't a classic of any sort.

First off, the main character is going through a coming of age journey where he becomes a pretty big deal toward the end, the bits I remember specifically is he bonds a fire dragon and gets access to fire magic and has to return to a school to learn how to control the magic. The fire dragon also happens to be part of a dragon family and they are the only fire dragons in existence within the current world. The main character happened to bond the father of the family and I think at one point the dragon's daughter gets kidnapped. If I remember correctly there are also elite "champions" who can traverse the skies / use magic and there are 2 nations at war with each other, one of these "champions" is a traitor but it turned out to be a lot more complex than a simple turncoat in the end.
One other bit I'm recalling is that at some point the main character either communes with or bonds with the ocean. I'm a bit hazy on this, but he basically bonds with almost all the "elemental" forces of nature and if I'm recalling correctly, there was on water based bond that (possibly called nyphids?) that healed him multiple times during his fights. As the book continues he teaches the professors at the school how to commune with the elementals, one specifically hated him for the fact the he had better control over "Earth" and the main character solved this by helping that specific teacher commune with the Earth elementals.
If I had any names I could possibly figure this out myself but I've been searching for the better part of a month before I found this group, hopefully one of you guys came across this novel.
