When you ask about Arabian Nights counting as diverse, are you referring to a marginalised author? If so, who wrote it? From what I can tell, there are many versions of this, some of which constitute cultural appropriation by white folx, so definitely not what diversity should be embodying.

I counted Renee Ahdieh as pretty marginalised :D Check out her biography, it's pretty interesting! :)

Oh and I meant in respect to YA. I don't come across many (actually this is probably my first one) fantasies of YA that don't have MCs as white people/culture. I really enjoyed it-- as a history major, it was also awesome to see teenagers actually in the heart of the conflict. You don't see that a lot in accounts/retellings.

But idk maybe some people found it offensive, or stereotypical. I am more familiar with Western European tales.

Sorry, had not realised that you were referring to The Wrath and the Dawn when you said Arabian Nights as there are actually books entitled Arabian Nights which are not all from marginalised authors. The reality is that publishing is highly whitewashed so I am not surprised you have rarely come across main characters who are not white. Even as someone raised in Trinidad where the majority of the population is not white, far too many of our required texts in school were from dead white authors!

And I hate that that's a reality :/ I'm hoping this challenge opens me to new, diverse main characters and plots.
