Fairly certain it was middle grade fiction. There are two girls, and they look the same. They are from from different time periods (99% sure on that) and communicate/possibly visit through a mirror.

I feel like the book cover has some pink on it, as well as a mirror.

The historical girl is from an abusive home and ends up living with modern girl. Somehow, the world is adjusted so the modern girls mother simply thinks she has two daughters when history girl comes through the mirror. (hide spoiler)]

First bit sounds like Mirror Mirror, but in the end a boy comes through from the past to live in the present...

This sounds a lot like Glint by Ann Coburn, except the girls never communicate
However it is a very good book with a similar plot

It sounds to me like this could be 'Come Back Lucy' by Pamela Sykes? It was written in 1973 and sold in the U.S. as 'Mirror of Danger'.
