Series: Chronicles of Narnia
Shelf: 2, 3, or 4
Read: 18 Aug
Rating: ✮✮✮
Review:
Gasp! I never read these books as a child and I didn't read them when the movies came out in theatres. They've been on my TBR for that long and now I'm not sure I'll keep going. Sigh.
I so wanted to love this series and I did enjoy The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; however, this entry in the series fell short for me. I really should rate it 2 stars, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Why, I'm not sure.
Anyway, for me, it was too choppy; frequent and abrupt flashbacks left me temporarily confused and frustrated. Add in the heavy morality and almost preachiness to the language and story and I wasn't in it. Maybe it was the jaded adult cynic in me, because I also could appreciate how it might be helpful in teaching children "right" and "wrong" and "good" and "bad", to a certain extent anyway. I'll leave it at that; you don't want to get me started on where the discussion leads, I could go on for quite a while.
Will I continue? Maybe. It will take some convincing as well as first reducing my TBR of its more promising reads.

Book: The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter
Pages: 379
Date: 8-23-17
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Wow! This was a fantastic read--I am so happy to have another wonderful series that I can glom! I really enjoyed reading about Maddox and Ashlyn--the entire cadre of demon hosts was amazing. There are several guys whose stories I cannot wait to read...the only thing keeping this book from five stars is that I felt the "baddie" wasn't super original. Everything else was though! I raced through this book in one evening which is saying something as I have BOY (Beginning of Year) Exhaustion Syndrome right now. To be able to hold my attention when by rights I should have been sleeping the sleep of the exhausted is a strong endorsement! The missing Pandora's box as well the rise of the titans promises plenty of complicated plot lines ahead and the surety that things will get worse before they get better. Oh goody! I can't wait!

Yep, I will. I knocked over my coffee and had to clean that mess up and then go to work. I'll post it as soon as I get home :)

Elaine, I've been reading that series since it started and have loved it ... for the most part. The earlier books - love, but my love has waned a bit in the last several books. I have #13 TBR. I do so love the different demon hosts and their stories, though.
For DEBUT AUTHOR, I read

I'll be interested to hear how ya like it. I've had that one for a while, but haven't gotten to it.

The Collector by Victoria Scott
Series: Dante Walker #1
Shelf: Debut Author
Read: 24 Aug
Rating: ✮✮✮✮☆
Review:
When I died, I had a choice: be stuck in hell 24/7, or become a collector and drag others down with me. I chose the latter, because that's what I do. I choose me. I choose the ease of sin over hardship. The Collector is a fun introduction to Scott's debut series about Dante Walker, an antihero who fully owns his self-centered attitude. He's one of Boss Man's soul collectors who's chosen to spend most of his time visible to the living. Charlie Cooper in Peachville, AL is his current target and he has ten days to deliver her soul. If successful, he'll get a promotion to Soul Director, which allows for permanent placement on Earth and no more required time in the Underworld.
The world had always been mine for the taking. Nothing mattered but me and my wants. He's overconfident, as always, especially after he spots Boss Man's target. Charlie ".... looks like a porcelain doll ... beat three times by an ugly stick [with] glasses, frizzy blond hair, a spray of pimples, and a stick figure so not attractive on a seventeen-year-old girl." Charlie's inner beauty draws him in as the two grow in different ways, ways that make it very hard for him to complete his task.
Charlie's friendships are different. She tries to protect her people, and they in turn protect her. They accept one another's imperfections and support one another. My friends weren't like her friends, which makes me wonder if I ever had any at all.The story, while it has religious undertones (it is about the Big Guy and Boss Man), is not preachy. At times, I was reminded of Wendy Higgins' Sweet Evil Trilogy, so if you like that series you should like this one, too. I read the book in one day and will most definitely read the last two in the trilogy sooner rather than later. I'm anxious to find out how this battle will end and what's in store for Dante, Charlie and friends.

But very glad you've got a good book to take your mind off of it.

Oh wow! That's terrible. I'm so sorry to hear that. Sending healing vibes your way!

I'll be reading

Shelf: Debut Author
Book:

Date Read: 8/31/17
Rating: 2.5 stars, rounded up because I'm probably just cranky
Gen is taken from the king's prison by the Magus to steal an ancient relic for the King. In exchange he will be set free. Piece of cake! Gen is always bragging about his ability to steal anything, no matter the obstacle or item. So, they set off on their quest, blah, blah, blah.
So, this story was... okay. It was just so slooooooow! It wasn't until the last half that anything interesting happened and by then I was just over it. The writing wasn't bad and I can see that the next books would probably be more my speed. It had a great twisty ending that might be enough to keep me reading the series. We'll see.

Lots of good thoughts for fast healing and an easy recovery!!!

Book: The Martian by Andy Weir
Found on p. 3 of the list
Date: 8/30/17
Pages: 369
Rating: 5 stars
Review: Wowzers this was great! I haven't seen the movie so have no idea how it holds up but the book is great! I was worried that I wouldn't understand the science or the bits that I did get would seem implausible but turns out I wasn't focused on the science...I was focused on the amazing storytelling of a worst-case scenario on crack!!
From the moment that the incident that will ultimately strand Mark on Mars happens to the conclusion of the story, I was hooked! My nose never ventured very far from the page which was unfortunate as I had both school work and house work that desperately needed doing. Oh, well. A good book always takes precedence over housework...and those papers got graded during my planning period so all was fine.
I highly recommend this book to pretty much everyone!

I am going to try to read Six of Crows as I also need to read it for another challenge...so, you know, two birds (with six crows...I find that way funnier than I have any right to!)

That's great to hear, Elaine. I've seen the movie but haven't read the book. I really liked the movie. Hubby and I have audiobook, which we might listen to eventually. But I have a habit of skipping books when I've watched the movie.

Oh Katharine! I just saw this!! Did you fall in The OR? Bless!! Hope you are on the mend.

Carnal Secrets by Suzanne Wright
Series: Phoenix Pack #3
Shelf: Action Packed
Read: 1 Sept
Rating: ✮✮✮☆☆
Review:
Carnal Secrets tells Shaya & Nick's story. They're both unique; Shaya is a half-shifter (human father) and Nick's wolf surfaced when he was very young. There are other factors, however, that keep Nick from immediately claiming Shaya when he realizes she's his true mate. After many tears, arguments, pleas and (finally) open discussions, the two eventually become a mated pair.
I'm happy for the pair because they've both suffered enough and deserve the happiness they ultimately found with each other, but I was hoping for something ... more. Either way, I like this series and will continue on with it. I'm interested in Roni (Nick's sister) and Marcus' story, which is next up in Dark Instincts.

That was my least favorite book in the series, Steph. However, I really liked Roni! She's one of my favorite characters.

I'm getting a cold as well, I think. Did you send me your germs?! LOL! Hope you're feeling better soon!

I did some digging this morning ... this is the book we were all laughing about,

Oh Katharine! ..."
No, not in the OR, thankfully. I was filling in at my old position. Arrgh. My ORIF (pin placement for you non-medical people...lol) was quick and went well. Now it's hopping around or on a Rolleraid for 3-4 weeks and then stitches out and more x-rays to see what happens from there. SO exciting! Well, at least I get to do quite a bit of reading, when I'm not knocked out with pain meds, at least. :)

Series: Hex Hall #1
Shelf: Debut Author
Read: Aug 30th
Rating: ✮✮✮
Review:
Is the plot original? Witch makes a mistake and humans witness her powers; so, no; not really. Simple, rehashed plotline with basic writing, yet I kinda enjoyed it. Yes, it's filled with teenage angst and whining that I try to avoid in YA books, but, it IS a YA novel, after all. I'm definitely not the target audience.
I think I liked it because I can relate to the basic premise--not fitting in and trying to find your space--and because I found myself laughing out loud at times despite the pain from a broken ankle. Maybe it was the pain meds, but I will probably give book #2 a try at some point within the next year.

Series: Charley Davidson #1
Shelf: Action Packed
Read: 3 Sept
Rating: ✮✮✮✮
Review:
I'm glad I FINALLY read this one. While not particularly engrossing in a thriller, page-turner kind of way, I did keep wanting to turn the pages. So much so, in fact, I found myself somewhat disappointed when my pain meds kicked in and at times, felt conflicted whether I wanted to take one or keep reading. To me, that's a sign of a good book or a warped mind; I'll let you decide. It wasn't so much the plot that hooked me, it was wanting to see what Charley was going to say next and looking for that laugh. I found a lot of them. Perfect pick for me at this time in my life, for more reasons than the leg. I hope #2 is on an upcoming called shelf.

I did some digging this morning ... this is the book we were all laughing about, "
Haha! I might have to check it out when I'm in the mood for crazy :) Thanks, Art!
