Sumit RK (sumitrk) | 7 comments I would say The Persepolis. A simple story told powerfully and the graphic novel format added a new dimension to the story..

Sarah Hackworth (bookishlotus) We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach (which I read years ago and just started to read again. I love it just as much as before). Anything by Matthew Dicks (depending on where you are in the world, his name may be Matthew Green), especially Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend

Jeff | 4 comments I am VERY picky and, honestly, I haven't had books grasp me from the first chapter in a very long time, except for a few of these. One is a sequel that just came out. Anyway, I know a lot of people have commented, but I'm going to say this and I hope you see it stand out:

****READ PEADAR ÓGUÍLINS' THE CALL & THE INVASION******
Grabbed me by the first chapters and didn't let me go until the end of the second book. (It is a duology, so there won't be three. The author, himself as said this).
The Call The Invasion

Had to go back just a little for these:

Gone Girl / The Rains / Until the End of the World / The Girl With All the Gifts: Extended Free Preview

I'm obsessed with this book and I started listening to the second one even though I have four books I have to get finished.

Elina Tola (Bookeliina) (elinatola) It was cold and raining fall morning when I first picked up this book.
The Last Elf by Silvana de Mari

The rain had been falling for days. The mud came up to his ankles. If it didn't stop raining, even the frogs woud drown in this world that was now one enormous bog.

Nemo (runningwithwolves) | 13 comments In general, then I would say it was a toss-up between Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, but more recently, and as a LGBTQ+ book, then it's The Foxhole Court (All for the Game) series.

message 89: by Katie.dorny (new)

Katie.dorny (katiedorny) | 35 comments Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe was the only one this year that i literally could not put down. I was obsessed and I'm so excited for the sequel to be published already.

message 91: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 194 comments Depends on how old I was when I read the book. I was 13 when I read Dragonflight for the first time. The library where I went to school had just gotten it hot off the presses (yes, I AM that old) and it had my attention from the first sentence, never mind the first chapter. That was one of the first books that I read that had a female MC who wasn't out doing "girl" stuff--you know, shopping, keeping house etc. Well, except for Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden, but well, they weren't someone that I found that interesting anyway, even though I've read all of both sets of books. But Lessa--now that was someone that I could relate to. (Um, not a usual upbringing for a girl back in the 60's. My Dad was military and we were overseas in what are now referred to as "hot spots" and Dad had taught all of us how to use a gun and given us our orders--Protect Mum and the younger ones.) So to have a female who actually DID things. Wow.

Then at 16 I found a copy of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress in a thrift store and that gave me my political philosophy that I use to this day.

There have been others, but those are the 2 that were really big influences on my young and impressionable mind way back when.
