Lára | 479 comments Hope you all had a nice July and that August will be even better. Share here what you´re reading.

I´ll try to finish The Unconsoled and will try to read at least one book from our group reads. Hopefully it all works out :)

message 2: by Angela (new)

Angela | 235 comments I've started reading Tigana. I really loved The Lions of Al-Rassan when I read it earlier in the year. Hoping I'll enjoy Tigana just as much.

Ctgt | 142 comments Angela wrote: "I've started reading Tigana. I really loved The Lions of Al-Rassan when I read it earlier in the year. Hoping I'll enjoy Tigana just as much."

Loved both books. Personally I would give the edge to Lions...but just by a smidge.

message 4: by Femmy (new)

Femmy | 166 comments I love Guy Gavriel Kay! Lions is my favorite, with Tigana a close second.

message 5: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I'm on vacation, which should give me enough time to finish To Green Angel Tower (since the trip is bookended with 23 hour train rides). After that, I'm undecided whether I'm continuing to Williams' new Osten Ard books, or whether I'll be taking a bit of a break and moving to something less ... weighty.

Joseph, I just started The Witchwood Crown (first in the Osten Ard books) and it is terrific. The author smoothly glides into the story, so whenever you decide to read the book, it's another enjoyable tale with some familiar and some new characters. I wasn't sure I wanted to start it because who knows when the final 2 in the series will be written and published, but curiosity got the better of me.

message 7: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Set The Lost Symbol aside to read Age of Swords :)

message 8: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (zalejin) | 248 comments Currently reading 11/22/63 atm and loving it so far. First King I have read besides the first Dark Tower.

Once I finish that I plan on hitting up either The Shadow of What Was Lost or Dune

Also reading Worm and Salute the Dark on the side. Worm is pretty much a never ending project haha.

message 9: by Liam (new)

Liam Perrin (liamperrin) | 194 comments Will finish Pyramids and want to read Guards! Guards! and then not sure. I hate leaving series unfinished so probably Sword & Citadel.

message 10: by Angela (new)

Angela | 235 comments Wonderful to hear Ctgt and Femmy that you both enjoyed Tigana.

I'm reading Leviathan Wakes, about time probably.

message 12: by Lára (new)

Lára | 479 comments I´m not reading The Unconsoled. I did indeed continue it but it´s on hold again. Every time I start a book or say I´m reading it I just stop but! this one I actually finished!

I started and finished The Silmarillion before our club´s reading was up so I can now comment on the thread, when it comes up :D

It´s mostly because I´m playing Lord of the Rings Online and I play on roleplayer server so names matters - Mordor expansion just came out and with it a High Elf race as well, which most of the players have probably already made and with the level boost to max lvl that you get with it, it´s really easy (you still need a lore appropriate name tho). I´m too lazy to be faithful to a thing so I don´t play it daily but it´s how it is. My minstrel will probably never be the strongest one but as long as she can take down half of the meanines by herself, I´m ok.

Anyhow, Sillmarilion is the best guide for almost anything elven and I play only elves.

I'm reading the book in November. Hopefully you enjoy it.

Hope you enjoy it! The Expanse has become my favorite Sci Fi series of all time.

Bran | 98 comments I just started Uprooted by Naomi Novik. First Novik I've read, I'm enjoying it so far.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments Of course, I'm reading......
Red Sister!

Looking forward to finishing it!

Man, I'm reading The Blade Itself. I don't know why I didn't read this ages ago. It is absolutely great. Probably will get a five star.

message 18: by Femmy (new)

Femmy | 166 comments I love, love, love the characters in The Blade Itself!

I read Uprooted last month and enjoyed it. Nice to read a real stand alone book for a change.

message 20: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments After a vacation that was bookended by 23-hour Amtrak rides, I finished To Green Angel Tower, read The Heart of What Was Lost and started The Witchwood Crown, all by Tad Williams.

Once I finish Witchwood Crown, I really need to pick up some much shorter things.

Monica wrote: " I wasn't sure I wanted to start it because who knows when the final 2 in the series will be written and published, but curiosity got the better of me."

I'm still in the early stages of Witchwood Crown (100-150 pages?), so things are still coming together, but I'm enjoying it.

I'll say this about Tad Williams -- aside from the hiccup with To Green Angel Tower back in the day, he's been good about finishing what he starts when he says he'll finish it.

message 21: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh Just finished Fool's Errand by Robin Hobb. I loved and hated the book

message 22: by Monica (new)

Monica Davis Joseph, Wow! That is a lot of pages of reading! I'm enjoying The Witchwood Crown as well, but only 200+ pages into the story while I switch off between that one and Red Sister. Good to hear that WIlliams is likely to come out with the second book in a reasonable amount of time.

Curious...what did you "hate" about the book?

I was not entirely happy about the reason/plotline that was used to bring him back from retirement and a lot of the things Fitz did made me feel he did not learn anything in the past 15 years. I felt it would suit a naive boy he once was but not a grown man in his 30s

Thanks. I will read it soon, I am a big Hobb fan and can't stay away too long

Just went back to reading regularly after nearly 6 months off due to an avalanche of family and health problems :(

I finished The Way of Kings yesterday. It's my favorite Sanderson so far, the world-building is just... Wow.

I managed to get my hands on Red Sister so I'll be able to participate in the monthly group read :)

message 29: by Lára (new)

Lára | 479 comments My colleague is on break so I´m doing his shifts now as well and since I´m lately at work from 9 to 21 I´ve started reading The Shadowy Horses. It´s one of the books in our bookstore that both of us (my colleague and I) can read as we please so I started it because I almost fell asleep on Monday. I´m actually surprised how good it is. Very captivating and I find that it makes me more alert. Almost better then tea

Finished The Blade Itself. This is the type of story that reminds me of why I love fantasy. Gave it a five star. Edited to give my review

Agreed. Really love that author!

Liam Perrin (liamperrin) | 194 comments Tnkw01 wrote: "Finished The Blade Itself. This is the type of story that reminds me of why I love fantasy. Gave it a five star."

That was already on my to-be-read short-list, maybe I need to make an ever shorter list...

In the meantime I'm really enjoying Guards! Guards! so far and I'm right on track with my personal Pratchett challenge :)

message 33: by Janette (new)

Janette | 211 comments I really liked Guards Guards. The audio version is brilliantly funny. I have just read The Misenchanted Sword which was OK but I'm not going to rush out and read any others.

message 34: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished Down Among the Sticks and Bones the other day. Thought it was good, but I liked the first book a little more. Now I'm reading Mongrels. Was in the mood for something more paranormal/dark. Werewolves work.

I highly recommend The Blade Itself. I have a friend who's a Pratchett nut and he says Nation is his best book. It's not a Discworld book but it's suppose to be good. Have you read it?

Liam Perrin (liamperrin) | 194 comments Tnkw01 wrote: "I have a friend who's a Pratchett nut and he says Nation is his best book. It's not a Discworld book but it's suppose to be good. Have you read it? "

I haven't. Nation is on the list, but I'm reading him in the order he was published in (mostly), and I'm slow, so it will be awhile I'm afraid.

@Janette: If I can find a way to work audiobooks into my life it would be great fun to revisit all of these that way. I have to fake a British accent in my head often lol.

message 37: by Janette (new)

Janette | 211 comments The audio books work really with Pratchett as sometimes the jokes just have to be heard rather than read.
I haven't read Nation. The only other Pratchett books I have read is the Long Earth series which I thought started brilliantly but I didn't enjoy a couple of the later ones as much

I enjoyed Leviathan Wakes and I've also read:Wrath, Caraval, Dissension, Ash and Quill and nearly finished Shattered Minds

message 39: by Sam (new)

Sam (Sam_W) | 16 comments I finished Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy, which blew me away. Awesome set of books. I can't help it, I just loved Glokta.

Now I'm reading Charlaine Harris' Midnight trilogy - I thought a change of pace might be in order :) I've just started the third of those.

Next up might have to be a non-fantasy diversion into Brian Blessed's autobiography (since Amazon were kind enough to put it on sale for Kindle). But I'll see what I feel like when I get there.

Monica Davis Finished The Witchwood Crown...very, very good; and the now long wait for the next in the series (Spring 2018?).

Still reading Red Sister; also very good. And just added in Furies of Calderon because it seems to be another of those "bridesmaids" in the group read polls that I may never get to read if I wait for it to win.

message 43: by Tnkw01 (new)

I'm starting Words of Radiance now. I can't seem to stay away from Sanderson's books for long :)
