Favorite book: Probably House of Suns or 84, Charing Cross Road
Least favorite prompt: A book you bought on a trip
Last prompt you finished: A book about food
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book set in two different time periods
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Maybe a comic book
Finally, are you in for 2018? I should be

- Message number for regular list post: My message is 321, but I didn't keep it updated. Here's a link to view my Google spreadsheet recording planned versus actual.

- Favorite prompt: A book recommended by a librarian, because it helped me explore something a bit new, but I could also guide the process a bit to get something I liked. And there are so many avenues for this - threads here, book podcasts like Professional Book Nerds, the "recommendations" shelf at the library, etc., in addition to striking up a conversation with a librarian.

- Favorite book: Excluding perennial favorites I re-read, Lovecraft Country

- Least favorite prompt: A book with a red spine (too hard to determine by searching in Goodreads!)

- Last prompt you finished: A book with a month or day of the week in the title (I saved A Night in the Lonesome October for last sinceI knew I'd love reading it.)

- "I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book that's been on your TBR list for way too long (I need all the help I can get working through my backlog!)

- Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book whose title is similar to a popular or well-known book OR a book with a swear word in the title

- Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes!

Favorite prompt: a book that takes place over a character's lifespan
Favorite book: Born a crime by Trevor Noah
Least favorite prompt: Career advice
Last prompt you finished: Book more than 800 pages (had a DNF due to severe boredom so had to start over)
I hope the bring back this prompt in 2018: book on TBR list too long or book recommendation from favorite author
Are you in for 2018: yes as long as no book > 1000 pages!

Favorite prompt: A book from a non-human perspective - I found a few different possibilities and both that I ended up reading (The Bees and Three Bags Full) were so interesting and fun to read!

Favorite book: Nine of my PS reads were 5 stars, but among those I think I liked Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk the most?

Least favorite prompt: Career advice - and I know I'm not alone in that.

Last prompt you finished: Recommended by a librarian - I saved this one for last, and asked my friend and coworker, our school's librarian. She recommended March: Book One, and I read the trilogy in 2 days.

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": There isn't one I can't do without, but new releases are always fun to hunt down.

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I like ones about characters, even though (because?) they often need to be found as you read instead of planned ahead. The thread with ideas for next year was filled with good ideas, so I'm excited to see what they come up with.

Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes, most likely (depends on the list to some degree, as I choose between lots of options for challenges to take on).

Favorite prompt: A book by an author from a country you've never visited
Favorite book: Kindred
Least favorite prompt: A book with career advice
Last prompt you finished: A book set around a holiday other than Christmas
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": The first book in a series you haven't read before
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book written more than 100 years ago
Finally, are you in for 2018? Absolutely!! I had so much fun!

I completed BOTH challenges-and when I started I thought I would have fun picking a book or two from the list and then would probably forget about it. It has reminded me how much I love reading (something I had forgotten in the last 30 years).

Favorite prompt: Book recommended by a librarian. I thought this was a good way to encourage people to use the library. Librarians are the experts!

Favorite books: My favorite books are books I probably would not have picked up otherwise which made it extra special. I loved An Untamed State, Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood, and Milk and Honey. It made me really think about the books I tend to gravitate too a lot differently.

Least favorite prompt: I have read several books from a nonhuman perspective and don't have an issue with that prompt but I hated the book The Bees. Based on everyone else's response to it, I must have missed something. I don't usually do Audiobooks. I did Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, and Everything in Between which was really good but I think my habit of having music on in the background a lot made it more challenging. I would be doing something else and realize I wasn't paying attention again. It was better in the car so will definitely try that on a longer trip.

Last prompt you finished: Book you've read that never fails to make you smile. Since this was a re-read, I chose the next in the Spellman series.

I feel like I can't comment on the 2018 list since it came out yesterday. I spent way too much time on this sight yesterday reading through all of them!

Finally, are you in for 2018? I'm not sure yet. I did it in 2015, then skipped 2016. I may skip it again in 2018 just to reduce my number of owned unread books!

Favorite prompt: didn't have one
Favorite book: Let's Pretend This Never Happened A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson
Least favorite prompt: A book of letters
Last prompt you finished: A book you loved as a child, Little house in the Prarie series, The Long Winter (Little House, #6) by Laura Ingalls Wilder
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018":
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book you read the year before, a free prompt.
Finally, are you in for 2018? Sorry, but no. Maybe in 2019.

Favorite prompt: A book you've read before that never fails to make you smile
Favorite book: Etiquette & Espionage
Least favorite prompt: A book that was published in 2017- I usually tend to read older books.
Last prompt you finished: A Book that's been on your TB Read list for too long
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018":
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Since we've already seen the 2018 list, maybe this is now a suggestion for 2019? A book with a sympathetic monster.

Favorite prompt: "A book that's been on your TBR shelf for way too long"
I have a tendency to add books with abandon, then look back 6 months later and think, "how did that get there?"
"A book that's more than 800 pages"
I may be in the minority here, but I loved this prompt. I have a habit of adding these nice, delicious doorstop books to my TBR, and then letting them sit there for months on end. This gave me an excuse to actually knock one of them out.
Favorite book: Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut
The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story by Douglas Preston
This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz
Saints for All Occasions by J. Courtney Sullivan
Columbine by Dave Cullen
Least favorite prompt: A book with career advice (blah) and a book of letters.
Last prompt you finished: A book of letters
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book that's been on your TBR for way too long. Sometimes I need a kick in the pants to take care of some of those older books on the list.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Well we already have the '18 list, so I'll go with the prompt that I like best from the list, which is a book about a villain or an antihero. Finally gives me an excuse to read I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling With Villains.
Finally, are you in for 2018? Oh, most definitely. And I'm strong-arming my reader friends to come along with me.

Favorite prompt: A book that takes place over a character’s lifespan. I read A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman for this prompt. It was a wonderful story and I really enjoyed seeing it unfold completely from beginning to end.
Favorite book: The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, My Life in France by Julia Child
Least favorite prompt: A steampunk novel. I wasn't interested in this prompt and I had difficultly picking a book. I love sci-fi, but typically find steampunk to be a bit too kitschy. However, I read The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman and enjoyed it.
Last prompt you finished: A book you got from a used book sale. I read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. A very quick, last read.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book by a person of color.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: They've already been announced, but I’m looking forward to “A book you meant to read in 2017 but didn't get to”. I have many!
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yep!

- Favorite prompt: A book mentioned in another book

- Favorite book: In the Woods and From Hell

- Least favorite prompt: a book set in a hotel, because the options seemed very limited. I started and didn't finish Gentleman in Moscow (for reasons), and ended up knocking out an Agatha Christie novel Evil Under the Sun just to fill the task. (At least it turned out to be a fun and short read)

- Last prompt you finished: A book with a month or day of the week in the title. I struggled to find a book I was in a mood for and had some false starts, and finally managed to stick with Saturday.

- "I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book that's been on your TBR list for way too long.

- Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I was actually going to suggest nordic noir for this, and hey, there it is!

Favorite book: for a book I hadn't read before, either My Brilliant Friend or Venetia
Least favorite prompt: Oof, there were a couple I hated, but I have to go with the "book bought on a trip."

Favorite prompt: A book you've read before that never fails to make you smile - It gave me the opportunity to really sit down and read the annotated Pride and Prejudice. It was a re-read but with a lot of extra information and interesting facts.

Favorite book: We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Doomsday Book or The Winter People

Least favorite prompt: Espionage Thriller...I totally stretched it by using my steampunk read, The Invisible library for it instead.

Last prompt you finished: Book set around a holiday other than Christmas

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book over 800 pages...I need to push myself to read longer books next year.

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I know they already posted the new prompts, and I've briefly looked at them but don't remember. I'd be happy with anything really, because it helps me when I'm feeling indecisive. I just pick a prompt and find a book to read next!

Finally, are you in for 2018? DUH

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Posting for my son, Jack. I did the challenge with him, he is 3 so we had to tweak a couple of the prompts a bit but we both had a lot of fun (as did my librarian!) finding books to satisfy all the prompts.

Favorite prompt: any with books about or by people of colour or different cultures bc we both enjoyed reads about the different experiences from a child's book perspective
Favorite book: how to train your train
Least favorite prompt: ones like by someone you admire or favourite etc because he's 3 so they were harder to interpret
Last prompt you finished: book with a subtitle
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": animal on the cover or in title
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: book about or involving a vehicle or transportation
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes! The new list looks great, there will be some tweaking of course but it was a lot of fun

Favorite prompt: A book set in the wilderness. I had so many options for this, set in all kinds of wildernesses.

Favorite book: Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier

Least favorite prompt: A bestseller from a genre you don’t normally read. If I don't read the genre, it's normally because I don't like the genre.

Last prompt you finished: A book with a month or day of the week in the title

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": None, I want all new prompts!

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book about a topic that you are curious about.

Ashley | 159 comments Hello!

I have finally finished the 2017 challenge.

Date you finished: November 12th
Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: 794 (just did the regular list this year)
Favorite prompt: There's a few I love - a book involving travel, a book involving career advice, a book by an author who uses a pseudonym
Favorite book: I read some really great books this year but I'll just narrow this down to one, Murder on the Orient Express. I hadn't read it before and loved every second of it.
Least favorite prompt: A book with a month or day of the week in the title; I just really didn't like the book I read for this one.
Last prompt you finished: A book about food
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": Since the list has already been released, I with they would have included A Book That's Been on Your TBR List Too Long
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I like that they included your favorite prompt from 2015, 2016 or 2017
Finally, are you in for 2018? Of course! I'm even going to do the full challenge.

Regular List and Advanced List

Favorite prompt: A book with an unreliable narrator – this one introduced me to Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot via The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, and I’m glad to have gotten in a Christie read before reading Murder on the Orient Express so that I knew what to expect from her writing. I also really liked A book you bought on a trip, since I am very selective about what books I actually like to keep on my shelves. It brought me Annihilation, which was awesome!

Favorite book: A book based on mythology – I read American Gods which has firmly cemented its place on my “Favorites” shelf.

Least favorite prompt: A book that is a story within a story – I feel like a lot of books that I read fall into this category, so it was just kind of a nothing prompt for me. I ended up using Acceptance, the last book of a trilogy, which I didn’t like very much (but you should still read the first book, Annihilation!)

Last prompt you finished: A book with a month or day of the week in the title – Fourth of July Creek

“I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018”: A book where the main character is a different ethnicity than you

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book with an LGBT+ protagonist

Finally, are you in for 2018?

Favorite prompt: A book recommended by a librarian. I talked with the HS librarian in our school system and she recommended Dumplin'. It was a wonderful YA read and will soon be made into a movie.
Favorite book: A gentleman in Moscow. That book has stayed with me much longer than I thought it would when I started it.
Least favorite prompt: A book that's been mentioned in another book.
Last prompt you finished: A book from a genre/subgenre you've never heard of. Metafiction = I was on a waitlist for Fangirl for months when it dawned on me to look in our HS library. It was available and my daughter brought it home for me. Finished at last!
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book that's becoming a movie in 2018

Favorite prompt: An audiobook - I LOVE Audible and have a weakness for celebrity memoirs read by their authors. Sadly, I chose a lemon for this prompt... my bad!
Favorite book: Not My Father's Son by Alan Cumming - I've been recommending this to everyone since I finished it in February. I did listen to this one, but used it for the "A book with a family member term in the title" prompt.
Least favorite prompt: A novel set during wartime - I'm just so sick and tired of reading books about WWII.
Last prompt you finished: A book that's more than 800 pages (I read Outlander)
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A bestseller from a genre you don't normally read - I started this challenge to get out of my reading comfort zone, and this prompt really helped me. I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, since I hate self-help books and don't ever read them.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Something with sports! I read a ton of sports biographies, and was so excited to see this on the list.
Finally, are you in for 2018? - YEP! I already have my reading list and most of my books in a big pile next to my bed. Hurry up, calendar!

Stephanie | 26 comments I finished the main list a while ago and made an "I finished" post just for it as I wasn't sure if I was going to tackle the advanced list. But, I'm a sucker to complete a challenge, so here's my "I finished" post for the advanced list!

Date you finished: Nov. 28

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: Advanced: 456

Favorite prompt: A book recommended by an author you love (The Children's Book, recommended by Diana Gabaldon)

Favorite book: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

Least favorite prompt: A book that's more than 800 pages. I don't mind reading long novels, but 800 pages seems a bit excessive when you're trying to read a book a week for a challenge. I read Kushiel's Dart, which I enjoyed enough to make the sequel my 2018 "next book in a series" choice, so I guess I'm putting myself back in the long novel boat. . .

Last prompt you finished: A book that takes place over a character's lifespan (The Stone Diaries)

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book mentioned in another book, which works out well, since this one did come back! I read Ham on Rye, mentioned in Oryx and Crake, for this. I didn't enjoy it, but I like the prompt.

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Too late to make one now, right?!

Finally, are you in for 2018? I am! I already have most of my books chosen.

Favorite prompt: A book that's been on your TBR list for way too long. My son had been begging me to read Sabriel for years, and this prompt was the kick in the pants I needed to get started. Once I started, of course, I had to fly through the whole trilogy, because it was just as good as my son always said.

Favorite book: Tough to choose! Probably … Lab Girl, by Hope Jahren? or maybe The Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri?

Least favorite prompt: A book that's becoming a movie in 2017. I like to read books before seeing the movie, so I had already read most of the books slated to become movies this year in 2016 or before.

Last prompt you finished: A steampunk novel. I've read a lot of steampunk in the past, not so much lately. I ended up going with The Clockwork Angel, because it's one of my daughter's favorite series.

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": Not sure what to say here, because I have already seen the 2018 list by this time.  My TBR list is so long, though, that I would be happy if they had the prompt about reading something old on your TBR every year!

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Maybe a graphic memoir?

Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: 972 regular. Didn’t finish advanced.

Favorite prompt: A book from an authors from a country you have never visited. I have had Khalid Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed on the shelf since it was published and never read it. This gave me the nudge I needed, and it was one of the best books I read this year.

Favorite book: The amazing Adventures of Kavelier and Clay by Michael Chabon. I thought I hated the mythical creature prompt, but someone suggested this book (another one on the self unread) so I picked it up. So glad, it’s wonderful.

Least favorite prompt: Steampunk

Last prompt you finished: A book you loved as a child.

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": well the list is out, so it is futile, but I liked the book mentioned in another book prompt, and didn’t get around to it

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: still a little late for this.... but how about a recommendation from a senior citizen? I like to hear what my older friends have loved in their reading lives. Usually it’s something different than the more recent popular books.

Finally, are you in for 2018? Yep.

Favorite prompt: Book read before, never fails to make you smile.
Favorite book: I incorporated all the Harry Potter books which are my favorite, but of newly read books my favorite was a tie between Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity and Tuesdays at the Castle
Least favorite prompt: a book that is more than 800 pages. It was a book i was going to read anyway, but it made it feel like homework.
Last prompt you finished: a book about food
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": a bestseller from a genre you don't normally read
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: a book that takes place in a country you have never been to.
Finally, are you in for 2018? no, it was fun this year, but it was difficult to find books for my later prompts and i have lots of books on my tbr list that just don't fit into prompts and i'd never get around to reading them.

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": The list is out, but I'm happy there are prompts focusing on diversity this year again!

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book adapted as a play/musical was the suggestion I most wanted, so I'm very happy it made it!

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: 528 for regular. I haven't finished advanced yet, but may not at this point, so I'm going ahead and posing about finishing the regular challenge

Favorite prompt: A book you loved as a child

Favorite book:Redshirts or The Paper Magician for most fun reads, butKindred for book I'm most glad the challenge made me read

Least favorite prompt: A bestseller from a genre I don't normally read (there very few genres I avoid, and there are reasons I avoid all of them--I read a sports book and it was only okay)

Last prompt you finished: A book that's been on your TBR list for way too long (but it did make me finally read Silmarillion!)

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018":I know it's too late for this, but the one I would have voted for is 'a book by or about a person with a disability'.

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018:Again, it's too late, but I think some kind of, 'read a book set in a part of your country/region that you've never spent much time in' would be really fun. Just have to word it carefully so people from small countries or who are very well traveled can still make it work.

Finally, are you in for 2018? So much yes!

Emanuel | 253 comments saddly, i'll not finish the challenge. I read 45 books til today, but left one aside(food prompt), that I'm not going to start this year, because I want to finish the 800 pages prompt withOutlander V - A Cruz de Fogo. My favorite prompt was the suggestion of an author I admire, and it'll be one that i'm going to repeat in 2018.

Favorite prompt: Contrary to a lot of people, I enjoyed the prompts that made me go outside my reading comfort zone, such as “A steampunk novel” or “A bestseller from a genre you don't normally read”. Whether I liked the books or not, it’s nice to have some variety

Favorite book: Homegoing which I read for “A book recommended by a librarian”. The experts do know best!

Least favorite prompt: “A book with a month or day of the week in the title”. It’s not that there was something wrong with the prompt itself, there were just significantly less options than I would’ve thought to chose from and I really disliked what I read for it.

Last prompt you finished: “An espionage thriller”

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": “A book with a _____ spine/cover” it’s fun and allows you to get creative while browsing

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Since they’re already chosen, I’ll just point out the one I’m looking forward to most which is “A book you borrowed or that was given to you as a gift”

Finally, are you in for 2018? Definitely!

Onto advanced... let’s see how much I can get done before the end of the month
