Amber M. McCarter (mommyultd) | 169 comments Well, Hadia, I think I'm going to go with The Raven Boys from your shelf since I enjoyed The Scorpio Races by the same author. Can't say exactly when... Unless, does the word "hygiene" happen to appear anywhere in the text?! If so, I'll read it this week for another challenge! lol Oh, the lunacy Goodreads can drive a person to... :P

Lisa Pixye (formerly known as Luaya), I chose Terry Pratchett's Nation at your recommendation, and finished it last night. What a magical book! I loved his imagination and sense of humor. Not many books earn 5 stars from me, but we both agree on that point. I really think you'd enjoy "Phantom Tollbooth," which has a very different plot but similar sense of humorous/imaginative style.

That's what is nice about a challenge like this -- the opportunity to be introduced to books and authors outside my usual sphere (and that of my book club).

Hi Steph,

We have been paired up this month. I have chosen The Alchemist from your book list. Have you chosen a book from my list yet?

Myra

Pixye Hi Lisa!
Yeah I don't know why I changed my username but whateves.
I'm so glad you liked Nation, it's definitely one of my favorite books
I'm sad to say I haven't chosen yet. Yes, I know, totally lame. I was going to choose Dragonriders of pern, but now I think I'll go with the phantom tollbooth. Thanks for the recommendation!

message 57: by Lisa (new)

Lisa They are both good! I think Dragonriders series inspired a whole genre of dragon literature (Avatar, etc.)

steph Hello Myra,
I decided to read Der König von Narnia. I think it is the german translation of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
I will read it in the version of an audiobook. So far I am really enjoying it.

Hi Steph,

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. You made an excellent book choice. This series is wonderful for readers of all ages. I will be picking up my book tomorrow. I am also "reading" an audiobook.

Fröhliches Lesen,
Myra

Annie | 89 comments Hey Remya,

sorry thought I had posted on here! But I have decided to read, Thirteen Reasons Why
by Jay Asher from your list. I'm almost finished with it and I think I'll be giving it the same rating as you.

Let me know if you need help choosing a book from my list!
Annie

Rachel, I decided to read Flawed. I recently ordered it from BookOutlet so I'm just waiting for it to get here.

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments I know I'm quite late to this, but I've chosen to read The Devil Wears Prada from Ditika's shelf. I can't wait to go and pick it up from the library! It seems to be the perfect kind of book that I need right now!

She gave it 5 stars and I'll update my rating soon!

R Z | 16 comments Just finished Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief; Pradnya gave it a score of 4 stars, and I gave it a score of 5 stars (4.75 rounded up). It was enlightening— I learned some things I didn't know about Scientology and what I did know, I was able to put into further context— and I think a really interesting look at the cult/religion phenomena.

Completed!

Book: The Raven Boys
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Partner's (Hadia) Rating: ★★★★★
My Rating: ★★★★☆

I'll definitely be continuing with this series!

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments Oh dear... I'm not even sure where to begin.

The Devil Wears Prada was an amazing read. I think the only thing that ruined it for me is the fact that I saw the movie before (and really, really liked it), so it's why it gets 4/5 from me.

It was really gripping and I can't think of any way it could have been better.

Lisa Just finished Book #2 from Pixye's shelf: The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett. Clever, clever, clever, and nothing like ending with a cliffhanger -- quite literally! I can see why this series is so popular (Pixye rated it 5 stars, I gave it 4 only because I liked Book #1 Nation even better. I also realized that several years ago I'd heard a radio play adaptation of "Mort," so I wasn't a complete Pratchett tyro.

Thanks again Pixye, for the great reads!

message 69: by Jadine (new)

Jadine | 18 comments So I picked The Giver from Sian's List and I totally agree with her rating of 4 stars. And oh my gosh it really did make me think! This book was one of those books that you're supposed to read in middle school but my class never did:/ I'm glad that I was finally able to read it though! I really enjoy Lois Lowry's books!

message 70: by steph (new)

steph I finished my pick of myras bookshelf a couple days ago, but forgot about the post.

I really enjoyed The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

my rating: 4/5

Myra Blake (tentmari) | 26 comments I'm glad you enjoyed the book, Steph. The other books in the series are good, too.

I'm still listening to my pick from your bookshelves. I hope to be finished with it in a day or two. So far I am enjoying it. I will report on it soon.

Myra

message 72: by Pixye (new)

Pixye Hi Lisa! That's super cool that you already finished the color of magic and I'm so glad you enjoyed both books! I really love all of Terry Pratchett's books and I find it sad that not a lot of people my age seem to like them or even know about them :( But I'm glad you do!
So I've had a bit of trouble finding The Phantom Tollbooth, a little hard to get books out here in the jungle and my next shipment comes in two weeks :(
But the good news is I finally found a PDF version and should be able to get started today! I'll do my best to get it done before the end of the month-I'll read through the night if I have to! I'll let you know when I've made some progress. Thanks again!

message 73: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Pixye, I would imagine you can't just pop on down to your neighborhood library. I can always send you a copy. Just PM me your mailing address if you want me to.

message 74: by Myra (new)

Myra Blake (tentmari) | 26 comments Steph, I just finished The Alchemist today. I know I'm a bit behind schedule but things have been hectic these last two weeks. While I enjoyed the story, it was not at all what I expected. Interesting story and the author has a unique way of offering an explaination of how all things in the world are connected to each other.

Myra

Hi Alex! I'm sorry I'm a bit behind on this month's challenge. I picked A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, and I have the book here, but just haven't had enough spare time to finish it! I hope to read in the next week or so, and will respond back with my thoughts! I hope that you've found something interesting on my shelf to read.

Anne ✨ Finds Joy (annefindsjoy) | 718 comments Just finished A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, from Alex's shelf. Alex rated 5*, and I did too! I loved everything about this profound emotional YA story. The edition I read was a special collector's edition, which had incredible illustrations, and an additional section at the end with more details on the background of how the story came to be, on Siobhan Dowd, on the movie, and thoughts from all those involved in the making of the book and movie.
