I can't stand Umbridge. Every time I hear her name or see her face I want to slap her across the face. The way she interrogated the students and made them use those special quills or whatever was next to abuse.
How come nobody has said Pettigrew yet?! He's one of the worst. But Umbridge and Rita Skeeter are the worst in my opinion. I kinda like Snape and Kreacher since in the end they show kindness and sympathy.
Snape was the fucking worst. A straight up child abuser and an all around terrible guy. Yeah he had a terrible childhood and I feel for him, but damn that man did not make a single decent decision in his lifetime. And in cases where he wasn't the absolute worst, his motivations were always terrible anyway.Umbridge is an obvious choice as well, but I feel like I dislike Snape a lot more than her because Rowling was trying to build Snape up as a not so bad guy after all. Like hell nah Jo I'm not gonna start symphatizing with this douche just because in the last book you reveal that he was creepily obsessed with a girl whom he treated like trash in the past. I know Joanne wants desperately to make Snape out to be a tragic hero, but this ain't it......

I disagree. Harry goes through so much trauma that he never gets any time or tools to heal from. He grows up as an abused orphan and by the end of the books that seems like the least of his worries. I don't think a single character in the books could go through the same shit as Harry and not end up with at least as severe depression, trauma and PTSD. I think it's also important to remember that Harry is a literal child through the series. He goes through this shit between age one and seventeen.
Besides his trauma, he was deified by the whole wizarding community. While that was at first probably really nice I have no doubt that it also alienated him from most of his peers which can make a child's life very difficult. Receiving both constant adoration but also very little actual support.
Yes he is whiny sometimes. Yes he sometimes acts arrogantly and says unthoughtful shit but that makes him a realistic protagonist. And personally I never felt anything beyond mildly annoyed by it.
Also call me an anarchist but I have like zero faith in the ministry. They seem corrupt at worst and inept at best. Many of them no doubt want to do good but the results of their actions throughout the books speak for themselves.
No hate on your opinion tho just my thoughts on the matter :P
Umbridge was bad, but I honestly believe Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia were worse. They were cruel for cruelty's sake - despite the fact that Harry was family - whereas with Umbridge, at least thought she was doing the right thing - I think. I would add in Dudley, too, but I think he managed to gain a little bit of kindness by the end - probably. There were other annoying characters, but most of them, like Dudley, were able to change at least a smidgen by the end.
For me, it's Ginny. I understand why the usual opinions are Umbridge, Percy, the Dursleys, Snape, or Quirrel, but they're SUPPOSED to have these problems. However, I don't feel that Ginny did anything substantial like other characters. She just felt too perfect and unrealistic. In my opinion, her best moment was when she was tricked by a book. But even then, she was eleven, and it's to be expected.
This is why - despite how amazing she is - I want to dislike Hermione. She always knows exactly what to do and saves the day with no obvious cons besides being an "insufferable know-it-all".

Cornelius Fudge is the worst because he blatantly dismissed claims made by Harry because Fudge was biased by Rita Skeeter's yellow journalism. Harry's claims that Voldemort was back were backed up with multiple pieces of evidence. As minister for magic he should have gone into the discussion of whether Voldemort was back without clouding bias about one of the parties. Also, he should have better sources for information than the Daily prophet (profit) which will transform anything into a mega-story to sell papers, even if the story is fake or wildly misleading. To make matters worse, he hired Umbridge. And refused to fire her after he was found to be wrong in the matter of Voldemort. And did not offer compensation or apology to the tortured students.

Harry's claims that Voldemort was back were backed up ..."Funny that you referenced "yellow journalism," as often yellow journalism does the exact opposite of what Rita Skeeter did. Yellow journalism usually makes up crazy stories or exaggerates true ones to sell papers and get more money. Skeeter and Fudge hid, belittled, and covered up the truth.
I'm not trying to point out a fault, and I'm not even saying your wrong to use the term. But it made me think -- wouldn't stories about Voldemort's return really sell a lot of papers, getting Rita a lot of money? So I'm guessing that it was more the Ministry behind the cover up, rather than the Prophet... which means that Fudge must have realized deep down that he was wrong, and Dumbledore was right.
I just can't stand Ginny and Umbrigde. Rowling tried so hard to make Ginny seem like the perfect girl that the character turned out to be a Mary Sue. And Umbrigde, well, she tortured a student, and was basically a bitch.

Cho and Cedric, I found them both to be incredibly boring for being such influential characters... I disagree with everyone saying unbridge, she was made to be hated so I’m not sure she counts....? That just means she was well written.

But you mention that yellow journalism often makes up/exaggerates stories, Rita Skeeter did this too. For example, she emphasized the parts from Slytherins like Pany Parkinson and Malfoy and their accounts against Harry and Hagrid. She influenced the reader by exaggerating the extent to which harry's scar hurt him, making it seem to readers, one of them Cornelius fudge that the pains in harry's scar had diminished his mental capacity. On the account of fudge, I agree that he was definitely doing the opposite of yellow journalism by hiding stuff. Fudge was hiding a lot of secrets and in tangent with the rampant misinformation campaigns that were sowed by the seeds of Rita skeeter's work. It was because the Daily prophet and the ministry was working together that caused so much different.
Okay, before I answer I just want to clarify: by worst character in no way do I mean that she shouldn't have been in the story at all, more like this person was one of the most evil people in the book.Hands down Rita Skeeter!!! Her lies would get me so worked up! There was no controlling the injustices of that woman!

And I wasn't saying you were wrong, she does use yellow journalism, just like you said. :-) I was just saying that it was a bit ironic that she exaggerated/made up stories, but then she went and did the opposite, not writing anything about certain subjects at all.
Like I said last time: don't you think that the Daily Prophet would make a lot of money off a bunch of "Voldemort Returns!" stuff? The only time the Prophet doesn't base their story off of rumors, the rumors are true. Ironic. :-)
If I were to say this from a point of view at the beginning of the series, I would say Snape, but, as we all see in the Deathly Hallows, he isn't all too that bad. He was just trying to protect Harry. But, now, I would say either Cornelius Fudge or Barty Crouch.

This character does make little sense, but it makes him all the more better.
I think I cannot find even a single character in HP series, who had no purpose to be there. Every character served a purpose into the formation of the story. If I have to select one character that is worse in terms of her/his portrayal, that would be Victor Krum. I didn't like his presence in the novel. Although his presence greatly affected Ron Weasley, which made him realise his love for Hermione to an extent.

Well, I cannot help but agree with your points. However, I would like to add to it that Harry Potter was supposed to be the "Hero" of the story. He had to act. He had to be there "to save the day". Had it been Draco Malfoy and the chamber of secrets, Draco would be the one saving the day for people in Hogwarts. Harry was given importance because he was given responsibility, which he was not really ready to take. Besides, he always thanked his friends and whosoever helped him. He never proclaimed the status of "the chosen one". It was given to him by none other than Voldemort himself.
Cornelius Fudge. Allowed Voldermort to come back with ease and is a selfish git. Also he hired Umbridge like what sane person would higher Umbridge IN A SCHOOL.
I have to say Snape. Don't get me wrong I can't stand Umbridge, but they way people love Snape for the one good act he did to Harry in seven YEARS does not make up for all of the abuse. Not to mention Neville's worst fear is Snape. if you think about it his parents where ruthlessly tortured to the point of insanity by deatheaters- run by voldemort. yet a TEACHER was his worst fear.. Snape not only bullied Harry because his father bullied him and married the "love of his life" but he bullied everyone that wasn't in slitherin. He used his power of authority in being a teacher to make people fear him. The first time i read this i remember throwing the book down and screaming in frustration because of how much i could relate to teachers using their power to make people fear them. I will never forgive Snape for the way he treated his students, and i understand that Harry looked just like James but if he even really loved Lily how could he treat her child like that. she would loathe him for what he did to her baby and all the other kids.
Cho Chang, because all she ever talks about is Cedric, Cedric, Cedric. Like, HARRY JUST WANTS TO FORGET!!! NOT TALK ABOUT IT!!!!
The worst part about her is that when she had the chance to show in actions how sorry and hurted she was about Cedric's death, she stood to the side of her friend Marietta, when actually that girl telling Humbridge made Lord Voldemort (The one who killed her Cedric) stronger taking out Dumbledore's Army. She is not a poor victim like everybody wants to believe. She is a hypocrite who can't live without the attention of boys cuz she doesn't rely on herself. Worst and dumbest Ravenclaw ever.
Cho Chang or Umbridge, reallyBut I'm mostly here to defend Fleur Delacour because I think she's very underappreciated.
Remember the story of Billy being a werewolf? How everyone in the Harry Potter universe views werewolves as disgusting excuses of creatures?
Fleur accepted him, saw beyond that, loved him for who he was and took care of him, or while his family treated her terribly for no real reason and hated her.
I also love the fact that the person who mattered to her the most was her little sister. I find it really beautiful for someone seemingly stuck-up to value their family so much.
Fleur deserves better and she's actually one of my favourite minor characters in the books - there, I said it.
^^^About my above comment, I apparently made a mistake since Bill didn't become a werewolf after all ("he just developed a liking for very rare steaks"), please cut me some slack I haven't read the books in a while
B U T he still had scars on his face from the encounter with the werewolf and she was disgusted at the mere idea of liking him any less just because of the scars
Anyway please appreciate Fleur Delacour

Severus Snape is awful, completely terrible thru all 7 books, in many ways his petty tyranny is worse then the brut..."I think you read my mind! This is a perfect explanation of how so many of us feel about Snape. I think we all try to put characters into either the good or bad category, but that isn't how the world works.
Saying Snape is sooooo stupid, like, you all should try to read better. The question says “worst character” not “the one you hate the most”. You can totally have him as the one you hate the most I understand that, but worst!? He is one of the most interesting and best constructed character ever. Your choice here should be someone that you don't like or care about AND actually doesn't add to the plot, nor in the good side, neither in the bad side of the war.
