Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments It's up to you, Martha, if you wish to share thoughts on what you've read - that's certainly welcome. All books fitting the challenge should be listed either before or after read showing your progress throughout. Share, at a minimum, the book's title, your read date and 1-5 star rating with your chosen categories.

message 9: by Martha (new)

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments Thanks Steph! I finished Macreive on 6/20 for the Character Name category. I'd give it 4 stars. It was the usual IAD fare with a smart mouth, plucky heroine and her troubled, handsome mate working through their rocky relationship to a HEA. I liked it better than a lot of the series, though, because both were good people at heart and interesting characters and there were less of the forced sex themes. Also, it introduced the Ubus people and advanced the Order and Accession plots. And even though these IAD books are formulaic I still find them addictive. So much so that I've started the next one, Dark Skye, which I guess can count as a Location since Skye refers to where the Vrekener live.

Welcome!

message 14: by Martha (new)

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments I've finally finished the IAD books, but the last two didn't have titles that work in this challenge so my next read will be something that does.

I will give brief reviews of the two books I did use. I liked Dark Skye more than I expected. Lanthe had been so terrorized by the Vrekeners and Thronos had been so malevolent in his earlier appearances that I was afraid they would go through some abusive, violent times. It turned out, though, to be a sweet romance compared to many in IAD. Also, there was plenty of action as they worked their way through the four realms.

On the other hand, I was disappointed by Ghost Bride, this month's book for the Vaginal Fantasy group. I found the heroine to be too immature and passive...she got her ass kicked much more than she kicked any ass! The "romances" weren't very developed and the only sexy times were a couple short kisses. Actually that was kind of refreshing after so many IAD books, but there has to be a happy medium.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Martha wrote: "I've finally finished the IAD books ... "

Martha, I finished IAD this year, too. It quickly made it into my top 5 series. Which book/characters do you like best??

I've been struggling to find my next favorite series. I tried the Mercy Thompson books at my cousin's suggestion and loved them. Reading the Alpha & Omega series now. The Patricia Briggs books are really the only ones to pull me out of my series hangover slump. I'm anxious about getting to the end of Alpha & Omega because I don't have anything lined up to blow me away like IAD.

I recently read the 1st Charley Davidson and I think I'll stick with it a few more books to see how it goes. I am also working my way through the Elemental Assassin (on #4) & The Other's series (on #3). What are you reading next? Anything else that knocks your socks off?

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments Melissa wrote: "What are you reading next? Anything else that knocks your socks off?"

I also really liked Mercy Thompson, I haven't read Alpha/Omega yet but it's on my (long) list. I'm fairly new to UF/PNR series, so I'm still catching up on some of the classics. One of my favorites was Kate Daniels and I also loved their new Hidden Legacy series.

I read the first Eternal Assassin and was not liking Gin's "I'm so tormented and cold as ice, Grief, Guilt" routine, but I eventually got into the story and the boss fight was intense so I'm going to read at least one more. I also started Black Dagger Brotherhood and I'm enjoying the super badass brothers and their plucky little mates but Lover Eternal bothered me by leaving the Bella/Zsadist story hanging for the next book. I think I'm going to leave it for a while and start something else, maybe Psy/Changeling?

message 21: by Melissa (last edited Jun 30, 2017 10:59AM) (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Thanks for the recs. Everyone seems to love Kate Daniels.

Hang in there with the Elemental Assassin books ... I hated Donavan Caine ... I hated how conflicted he made Gin feel and how much power over her that she gave him. (view spoiler)

I loved all the BDB books & the Fallen Angel series by Ward. I read them before I found Kresley Cole.

I am loving Alpha & Omega - I've been reading them at a pace of 1 book every 2-3 days.

If you're new to UF/PNR, I would suggest Iron Druid by Kevin Hearne - it's a fantastic series. Lots of pantheons, lots of action. Definitely UF (instead of PNR). Very cool to hear a male voice in this genre. Oberon, Atticus' irish wolf hound, is so, so lovable and is totally every dog. Serious stuff happens throughout the series but Oberon keeps things lighthearted.

message 22: by Martha (new)

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments I'll definitely check out Iron Druid. I'm a dog lover even though mine is tiny, not an Irish Wolf Hound Lol

message 25: by Martha (new)

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments I've been having the same problem: I've been reading books whose titles don't fit this challenge. The good news, though, is I've been having lots of fun with the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I think I'm on book 9/14 and every time I finish one instead of starting something different, as I intend to, I find myself going straight for the next BDB. As one of the brothers would say, addicted much? I did figure out I could use Lover Mine under Who-Gramerly Bits. I actually liked that one the least so far. It's John Matthew and Xhex's story and for some reason it didn't grab me as much. Also at this point I'm finding I might prefer two or three fewer POVs in each book. Still, all in all it's up there among my favorite series.

message 26: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Glad you're enjoying it, Martha. I have had some issues with some things in the more recent releases but I can't bring myself to stop reading them. Love those Brothers. :)

message 27: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Attachments by Rainbow Rowell I *finally* read Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. I loved it! While the time frame is pre-Y2K (and before internet as we know it), it made me think about how we think we "know" people - strangers - based on their online personas. Being a person who grew up before social media, I guess it always makes me feel weird when I catch myself thinking about people I "know" online - like my favorite BookTubers. I find myself wondering what they are reading right now or I want to recommend a book that I think they’ll love or if it's been a while since they've posted then I find myself thinking that I hope they're okay ... so I go creeping on their channels to see if there are any clues... so yeah, it feels super strange to find myself thinking of these people as friends when I don’t know them in real life. Not that I have any intentions of stopping – I’ve been following BeckieO on her TrichJournal channel forever because I really want that girl to get better – if you see the video of her photo a day for the past six years it will break your heart to see her transformation between well & sick times and back again (https://youtu.be/eRvk5UQY1Js). Anyway, I think that’s why I loved Lincoln so much – he knows he’s being a creeper but he genuinely cares about these ladies and wants the best for them.

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley I also just finished Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley. The Letters Library is the best thing ever and should be in every bookstore in the world. I loved the inter-connectedness of the characters and though it was predictable at times overall it was just what my heart needed. I did not see the stuff with Frederick coming at all but he was probably my favorite. Henry was probably my worst next to stupid Amy. Relationships between friends, family, lovers and especially book lovers are the main point of this book. If you love books that talk about other books and favorite passages – it’s definitely worth overlooking Henry’s longing for Amy.

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments I decided King can be an occupation and used The King. The 12th book in the series and I can't believe I've read them one after another. I think it was a mistake not to take breaks but my compulsiveness got the better of me. Plus she leaves each book with all these to-be-continued having individual stories run across multiple books. I am afraid, though, that I'm getting tired of some things, either that or these later books just aren't as good. The fractured stories, in particular, are starting to bother me. In this book, there's not only the title relationship of Beth/Wrath, we also have pretty much equal time given to each of Sola, Selena, and Layla. It's like reading four short stories cut up and interwoven, three of which you have to read future books to complete. Another problem with this book is that there was virtually no fighting. As far as I can recall, the only fight scenes featured the Bastards. Come on, you have to let the Brothers kill some things! So, the question is, do I polish off the last books in this series, or be sensible and cleanse my palate?

message 29: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Yes! Finally have at least one book in each category! Just finished Second Grave on the Left (Charley Davidson, #2) by Darynda Jones Second Grave on the Left - not sure if I am going to continue this series right now ... I like how fast paced these books are and I even like Charlie's sense of humor but sometimes she's just exhausting. I really had to push myself to finish this one because reading Charlie just wore me out.

message 30: by Martha (new)

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments Charley's on my tbr list, but you don't really make me want to rush into it lol. The character I've found exhausting is Gin in EA---just so much angst. People seem to like Venom better than the first two, though, so I'll get back to that eventually.

message 31: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments I listened to the audio of Charley @ work and the second book has a lot going on ... which I am totally cool with but the snarky comments were excessive enough in book two that I found myself tuning out and having to back up to figure out what was going on. If I read it in print, I would probably have liked it more - I like her sense of humor but this time I found myself thinking "shut up already" more than once. When I pick up book three I'll just skim over the parts that are too much.

I totally agree with you about Gin - books 3 & 4 were much better than 1 & 2 as far as her commentary goes. (view spoiler)

message 32: by Martha (new)

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments "Shut up already" lol

message 33: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Kindred Spirits by Rainbow Rowell After reading Attachments, I was dying to read some more Rainbow Rowell, so, I picked up Kindred Spirits. It's a short story about Elena, a girl who just wants to geek out with other Star Wars fans in anticipation of The Force Awakens theatrical release. The book is super short so I don't want to give anything away but it's safe to say that things don't turn out how she imagined. It's totally cute and totally what you would expect from Rowell.

Poison (Elemental Assassin, #0.1) by Jennifer Estep So ... I've been trying to psych myself up for the next Elemental Assassin - Spider's Revenge (book 5). I didn't read the description (I want to be surprised) but based on how book 4 ended, my guess is that this is going to be the one where Gin meets Mab ... idk if I am ready for that yet. So, to prolong the torture, I read all the short stories available on Jennifer Estep's website. Poison is the first and is told from Finn's perspective. I thought it was pretty cool to see both Finn & Gin as teenagers. I was really shocked at Finn's initial feelings toward Gin. Overall, I thought it provided some good insight into their current relationship.

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments I got Wildfire yesterday and finished it today. I really love this book and series. To me, it has everything: mystery, action, a hot romance, good characters, and a well-developed world. I would definitely give this series my highest recommendation.

Melissa, I read the EA short stories, too, and agree that they give some good insights. I always like getting the other POVs. On the other hand, after all the BDB I'm finding single POV books rather refreshing.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Yay! Congrats on your 10! I've been curious about A Court of Thorns and Roses but I haven't really been in the mood for straight fantasy ... I'm kind of in a book slump. I have a ton of books checked out that cover a wide variety of genres but nothing really has my full attention right now.

Totally agree - it's easy to get burnt out. If you are in the mood for single POV stuff, you could try the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne or the Alex Verus books by Benedict Jacka. I'm getting ready to re-read the Omens series by Kelley Armstrong in anticipation of book 5's release next month. Also, Charlaine Harris' Midnight Texas series follows the same core characters throughout the 3 book run (with few from the Sookie Stackhouse world!) & the TV show is supposed to start Monday night. Lotsa good stuff!

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments I started Patricia Brigg's Alpha and Omega series and I'm loving it. I really liked the Mercy series, but hadn't thought of A&O until Melissa mentioned it. I finished the first, Cry Wolf, yesterday and just finished the second book today, but Hunting Ground doesn't work as a title for this challenge. The books are fast-paced, with all the action, mystery, and wonderful characters you expect from Briggs. I don't like Anna as well as Mercy, but then few heroines exceed Mercy. Charles is wonderful, though, and it's set in the same world, which is an extraordinary one.
Melissa, I also read the first Iron Druid and thought it was a lot of fun. You have such good recommendations! Now I just need some titles that fit this challenge.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments I am so glad that you are enjoying both Alpha & Omega and Iron Druid! Atticus is the best. I just wanna be his friend and hang out with him & Oberon. And I love The Morrigan in this series. She is creepy in the cutest, most oblivious way.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Bone Gap by Laura Ruby Bone Gap is one of those books that's unlike anything else. It was so beautiful and strange. The Persephone myth is reimagined but it's much more than that. It's really hard to define ... there is no clear cut god/fae/nightmare creature but there is a man who can shape worlds, there is a girl who can conjure a horse to help her friend mourn, there is a boy who can walk into the gaps of the world and slip into another reality. This meager description doesn't even scratch the surface of this book. I really can't express how much I loved it but let me say this ... Neil Gaiman is my #1 author ... this totally felt like a story he would tell ... Think Ocean at the End of the Lane or maybe even Neverwhere. Where the impossible is possible and people are so much more than they seem.

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments Melissa, Neil Gaiman is my favorite, too, and I adore Ocean at the End of the Lane. It's not his most widely read but it's so atmospheric. I'll definitely check out Bone Gap.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Atmospheric ... yaaasssss. That's the perfect word to describe what I wanted to convey. My feelings are so big that they can't be compressed ... I didn't even mention Miguel who believes that the corn is alive ... like more than just a plant way or Charlie Valentine who keeps chickens in his house or Petey ... god, I loved Petey.

This book was on my TBR for a reeeeallly long time. I wasn't feeling what I had checked out from the library, so I used a random number generator to pick something from my TBR & this was the # that came up. I'm so glad that it did and I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner.

Martha, I'm starting to think we are the perfect book buddies! Just different enough to keep things interesting!

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments As my final pre-Bingo read, I finished The Sixth Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko. This series was probably the first urban fantasy series that I read following a recommendation of a friend of my son. I've enjoyed the series, especially the first three books, but it didn't immediately lead me to reading more UF. The magical system is one of the strengths and the plots are strong, also. Don't expect romance, though, the MC does get married in an earlier book, but the relationship is never featured. His relationship with his daughter is more interesting. One thing that bothers me, though, is there's a lot of conversation and I often am left not quite knowing what's going on. Are they angry? joking? implying things I'm not understanding? I suspect some of it is translation or cultural issues and maybe some is "art" but I don't enjoy being so puzzled while I read. This is the last book in the series (for real this time given the ending, he purportedly ended it once before in The Last Watch) so I won't have to be confused any longer. Well, not by these books, anyway.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments So ... I had it in my head that I was going to use Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as my 4 Elements pick ... until I remembered: "NO RE-READS". Gaahhhh.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Going through my TBR to find something that will work for my remaining tasks. Ideas include:

Things that Grow
Forget Me Not by Ellie Terry Forget Me Not (Middle-grade Contemporary) is about a girl with Tourette's. Sophie & I LOVED Wonder and this book was recommended on one of those "If you like that, try this" lists. She's almost finished with The Sun Is Also a Star. (I couldn't get into it, so I quit six chapters in.) Anyway, we're going to need something to read together before bed - this might be it.

4 Elements
Brain on Fire My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness (Autobiography/Memoir) I bought this one waaaay back in 2012 when it came out. Never read it. The last 2 or 3 nonfiction books I've picked up have been duds. Maybe this will be the one to get me out of my NF funk.

Pyromantic (Firebug, #2) by Lish McBride Pyromantic (Firebug #2) (YA UF) I read book one a few years ago ... and apparently gave it 4 stars. Unfortunately, I don't remember it - like at all ... something about kids w/ powers being locked up in a juvie type place ... idk. I vaguely remember a love triangle (groan).

Wicked Like a Wildfire (Hibiscus Daughter, #1) by Lana Popović Wicked Like a Wildfire (Hibiscus Daughter #1) (YA Fantasy) This one could work in 4 Elements or Things That Grow . I saw this on my library's Overdrive home screen - the cover caught my attention. It's about a family of girls who can manipulate beauty. The description was intriguing enough to add to my TBR.

Time of Day
Night of Cake & Puppets (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2.5) by Laini Taylor Night of Cake & Puppets (YA Fantasy) This is where I am in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series. I really liked the first two books.

Seize the Night New Tales of Vampiric Terror by Christopher Golden Seize the Night: New Tales of Vampiric Terror (Horror) Compilation of short stories. Especially interested in the stories by Charlaine Harris, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kelley Armstrong, and David Wellington.

Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) (UF) This one has been on my list for a while. I'm definitely leaning towards UF more than PNR lately. Wavering on this one a little bit though ... I just finished the first Jane Yellowrock and I kinda want to devour that whole world before I start something else that I suspect I will love.

Still need ideas for:
Body of Water
Season
(When) Grammarly Bits
Timeline

Anyone read any of these and recommend one over another?

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments I really liked the Night Huntress series. Cat and Bones are among my favorite couples in UF and the books have exciting plots. I hear you about having a lot of series going, though, I'm going to try and finish up Iron Druid, Alex Craft, Fever, and Elemental Assassin before I start other series. The problem is the titles in those series don't work well for this challenge. Like you, I'm going to have to start looking for books specifically for this challenge. It gets harder when you have fewer categories left.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Hey, Martha! I just finished Urban Enemies. It's a collection of short stories about the bad guys. Anyway, there is a funny Iron Druid short called The Naughtiest Cherub about Loki traveling to Hell to talk to Lucifer about Ragnarok. There are not really any spoilers for the series BUT Loki does have the knife that the Ice Trolls made Granuaile ... so if you don't know about its special power yet - you might wait because it's kinda cool. It cracked me up. Hope you are enjoying the series!

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments Thanks, Melissa, I definitely look that up. I just finished the book with the ice knife. I loved the yetis!

Melissa Davis | 790 comments oh yeah! Yetis! I was drawing a total blank when I was trying to think of them! Lol! Ice Trolls! XD

Martha (mkoopman27) | 346 comments I hadn't looked at this challenge in a while but I discovered I'd read 3 books over the past few weeks that qualify. Two are from the Lunar Chronicles, which I really enjoyed. I'm using Winter as a season, even though it's really a character name. I even enjoyed the book of short stories, Stars Above, in spite of short stories not usually being my favorite thing. I also discovered a novella from the Night Huntress series, Happily Never After. I'd loved the series and spinoff, so going back to that world was fun. I'm now at 14/20, but the last six categories and my tbrs don't match up well, so it may or may not happen.
