SOLVED. Book about a girl and some fire mages (YA, fantasy). [s]

The book was set in a different world to our own and there was this girl and i think she had the ability to control fire. There was this specific scene where she's in this town and its cold and all the buildings are made of wood. Some of the buildings catch fire and the girl is going in to save as many people as she can (i think she may put a wet blanket over her head at one point) but after she's inhaled all this smoke she comes out of the house and everyone's safe and this old lady gives her and this other person some gross stuff to drink that makes them cough up all the smoke.

I read this at least five years ago but I'm pretty sure its older then that.

I think at some point she's travelling with fire mages but I can't remember.

I really remember that this book had a specific magic feeling to it.

Mercedes Lackey has a series of romances that all have fire elementals (male and female) in them. It's been a lot of years since I read them, so I am not sure if one of them might match your book, but thought I'd mention her. The Fire Rose is the first book in the series, which is called Elemental Masters .
