I had something to share and though of the term Soap box, so I thought that I would start a folder called that. Feel free to use this "location" as well for your own thoughts...

Here is what I have found to be the problem with DC TV shows and DC movies...

They want every character to be Batman. Except Batman.

Man of Steel... Making this darker was a misrepresentation of the characters.

The Flash - same deal. Having his mom killed to be like Flashpoint is one thing, but then killing Henry, and what is going with Savitar threatening Iris... C'mon.

Arrow - I can see being similar, but stealing Ra's as the big bad?

The Dark Knight Rises though - Batman hung up the cape for eight years... again - complete misrepresentation of the character

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Bingo!
DC made a ga-zillion dollars with Batman so the lesson they learned was the more you can make a character like Batman the better it will be.
So lots of dark and gritty even if it does't fit the character, every villain is a serial killer and not much fun to be had.

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments FutureQuest is done.
Now we find out, will DC do more with these characters or will they do their usual move of getting the rights to a property and then neglecting or misusing them...

The betting pool starts now!
Do we get more great HB comics or do these guys end up in the storeroom next to Milestone, the Shazam family and the Charlton heroes?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I agree - Just because the Batman movies were popular doesn't mean we have to make him the star of every movie or every character like him. That's a pet peeve of mine as well.

Smallville did it right. Clark had both adoptive parents for roughly half of the series and their influence on his character was apparent. Apart from Clark occasionally coming into contact with some red kryptonite or whatever - he was a good guy - criticized as a "Boy Scout".
As it should be

The Flash from 1990 - If I remember right, Barry had both parents alive through the series. But they (the writers) gave him a brother named Jay who was killed in the first episode. Supposedly that inspired Barry to become a hero... Why? To be more like Batman?
This was 1990 and hot on the heels (sorry) of Tim Burton's Batman. They even had Danny Elfman provide the music.

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Anybody else tired of the constant events from the big two?
Seems like we are constantly building up to an event, stuck in the middle or recovering from one and they have to drag every title along with them.

So tired of them.
Especially frustrating as they are constantly earth shaking and changing the status quo.
How do you have a status quo if you are constantly shaking it up?

Course if they stop distracting us with them readers might realize that most continuity coming out of the big two makes no sense.

Yes. Enough with multiverses splitting and merging and so forth

message 10: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments So, netflix has cut a deal with Millarworld.
Which means I will never be free of Mark Millar.

It was fine when his horrible comics were being turned into movies and he stopped writing for the big two.
But, now every time I go to Netflix, I'm going to see his dreck in my 'you like comic based movies, so may also like this' section.

Why couldn't he have cut a deal with some streaming service I never use?
Why won't he just go away!

message 11: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Why does every story from the big two take forever to tell?
I'm not talking about 'six issues will make a trade' story padding, but stories that drag on for years.

Realm war in Thor has been going on for years and it is dragging.
Jason Aaron can write Thor like nobodies business, but then he dumps a bunch of realm war on it and I just wish he'd stop and just write Thor.

I don't mind story arcs, but so many move at a snails' pace and aren't worth the effort.

Not sure who that is, sorry. I know they had a Marvel deal going for awhile

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments So, Brian Bendis is leaving marvel and going to write for DC.

Apparently, he's done all the damage he can there and is now going to see how badly he can mess with the DCU.

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments The next person who says 'Well, Superman is hard to get right. He's so unrelatable...etc..." gets slapped.

I just felt I should warn people with the holidays coming up.

This also applies to people who defend the DC movies by saying 'What? You want them to just copy marvel...?"

Travis - did you watch Justice League?

I have not. I actually finally watched Batman v Superman a few days ago... I didn't really care for it... not my thing.

I haven't heard a peep about this Justice League movie

message 18: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Nope.

My daughter dropped hints about wanting to see it and I dropped hints back that it was doubtful and she gave up.

If netflix gets the DC movies on instant, then maybe, but aside from WW they have all looked dire .

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I heard Justice League was better than many fans figured, but we haven't seen it either. My son and I haven't been in a theater mood.

I'm not sure on DC details, but with Disney now starting their own streaming service soon as well, that will limit some of the Marvel stuff that Netflix doesn't already have the rights to. I'm curious how Netflix will be able to stay as secure in standing with so many other giants of the industry doing streaming themselves.

message 21: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments I'm interested to see if netflix tries to suck up to DC with their marvel deal on such thin ice.

The only way I'm watching the recent movies is if they are on instant, but it would also be cool if a bunch of the older DC based shows and movies went to instant.

Wait and see.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Yes, with Disney announcing they are going to do their own streaming stations and owning Marvel, I'm curious how the deals will eventually go for Netflix, who made a deal previously for Marvel stuff. I know Hulu bought the exclusive rights for Smallville. Lucifer from Fox is only on Hulu and not allowed to be streamed via other stations.

message 23: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments So, Bendis is going to DC and they gave him superman.

Feel a bit sad about this.

message 24: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments DC needs to do more with the Martian Manhunter.

Great character, but his solo series never last longer then a year or two and in TV shows he's always a supporting character.

Give him a show!
Give him a comic where he does more then fight other aliens!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I agree - Martian Manhunter is fascinating enough on his own to have a show, as long as they can keep the cheese down. The newer shows that have been coming out later just aren't doing it for me.

message 26: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments So, we are finally getting the Snyder cut of Justice League.

Really curious to see what happens to the angry internet fanbase, because I seriously doubt it makes that movie better and there's no way they admit they are wrong or that it sucks.

message 27: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments So, I'm really thinking, I don't care for season long arcs on the CW shows anymore.
So few of them work pacing/story-wise.
They are quickly becoming my least favorite part of every CW show.

Really would like the writers to try something different: maybe split the season into two smaller arcs?
More stand along episodes.? Not every single episode has to connect to the big bad.

Feels like, if they doesn't't try something different, this will just drag the CWuniverse down.

message 28: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Well, in order top deal with the fact that they did something stupid and are hemorrhaging money, Time-Warner looks to be gutting DC.
Not shocked that the streaming site is going, as TW owns a couple of those already, but not looking good for the comics side either.

Sad to see.

message 29: by James (new)

James | 340 comments Mod
How are they getting DC?

message 30: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments They had massive layoffs.
Between the streaming service and comic publishing, roughly 600 people were let go, including a huge chunk of DC editorial.
Bob Harras, who was a senior editor and had just taken over as editor in chief from Dan Dido is gone.

message 31: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments And DC just announced they are trimming 20% of their comics line.
Now, a bunch of those were already bettering on the brink of cancelation, but that's still a worrying chunk.

Basically, if you are reading a DC title, and that character doesn't have a movie/TV deal...be afraid.

message 32: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Other thought: It's weird reading the comics and watching the CW shows and seeing what they kept and changed:

Firestorm was engaged to a member of his rogues gallery
They are up to three Black Canaries
Vibe is Flash's best friend, but he think's Elongagted men is a jerk

Etc.

Be interesting to reverse engineer the CW into the comic-verse, and use that template with all the comic versions.

message 33: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments I keep hearing that TV shows need to change the comic costumes to make them work: Yet the changed for TV/movies outfits are all universally ugly, while the ones that actually try to look like the source material work.

Go figure.

message 34: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments New Suicide Squad video game trailer has the squad sent into a city overrun by aliens (I think) and encountering a evil duplicate/posessed Superman and they act like he's their main target...

You are going up against superman and the team you picked is a stripper clown with a baseball bat, a guy with a lot of guns (handy against a guy that's famously bulletproof), a guy with a boomerang and a big shark...

This game should be five minutes long.

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Anybody still here...?

And if you are, is anybody reading the new 'Dawn of DC' relaunch series?
Tried a couple and they've been crazy hit or miss, so was wondering which titles people think are the good ones and worth a look.

message 36: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Blue Beetle left me with mixed feelings.
Great design.
Mostly, a really solid cast.
The safest, by the numbers script you ever saw.

I am, but not nearly as active on GR groups other than some random challenges sometimes.

I got out of CW over the years and can't stomach most of their shows, so don't have much input on DC TV in general lately unfortunately

I do plan to try Blue Beetle when I get a chance
