Correct. The idea with this challenge is to read books that have been hanging around a while.

If the first edition of a book I want to read is published in 2013 but the one I have on my shelf is 2014 would that count or not?

Just curious, are we still allowed one re-read? I want to re-read because it's been three years since I've read it, and I want to read the sequel as well. Only the first book is a re-read.

books you want to read. Do they have to be YA. Or do they just have to be read before 2014 and do they have to be add to your book shelf for this challenge?

Books don't have to be YA at all. They cannot be published prior to the beginning of this year though as the whole point of the challenge is to read books that have been on your shelves for awhile. :) I am sure Sarah will post a better answer but hope that helps a little for now.

only asking because I only just found my ereader and it has more books on there i have never read before. I just buy them and they sit there. I brought the books last year and year before that.

You don't just have to read YA books, you can't use picture books or comics though, and they have to be over 100 pages still. Other than that, any book published before 2014 is fine, including ebooks ☺
