I have been trying to find this book for over 30 years

I read a fascinating book when I was in jr high but for the life of me I cant remember what the name of it was. it was in 1992 when I read it, it was a sci-fi novel, adult reading level, and paperback.
from what I can remember of the book a man went upstairs on his wedding day to look for his wife because she was late for their wedding and found her passed out in the bottom of their closet in her wedding dress. he carried her to their bed and noticed she had two bumps on the back of her head. he was going to call and ambulance but herd a voice in his head that said "do that and the female dies." it comes to realize that a alien life has inhabited his wife's body but she could speak or move but was still alive. all else I remember is the alien life form chatted with the husband and if the husband got the wife help in any way to keep the transformation from the wife merging with alien life form the alien life form would kill her, but his love for her was so strong in the end he asked to be merged as well just to stay with her. and in the end I remember reading is to life forms slithered out of the house into the night.
I hope someone else had read this and can give me a name this is my last resort before I give up.

How did you find it--recommended for you, scanning shelves, the cover grabbed your attention, the blurb on the back grabbed your attention, a review in/on a newspaper/radio/tv show. What country was it set in? Was it set in a village, town, city or megalopolis?

I actually stole it from my sisters drawer lol when I was young, what I wrote in my post is all I can remember though
