Nay (4ukcats) Question about The Bird and the Sword--Is that totally YA? Or bordering on NA?? It sounds good, but I don't know if I want to read another YA book so soon.

message 757: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments Nay - I really really really want to read The Bird and the Sword, but I'm gonna need a buddy because it's fantasy and totally outside the realm of what I read, but everyone swears it's amazing. So, if you are willing to wait for a bit to read it, maybe we can read it together?

OMG Ela...I so need you in my everyday-for-realz life. I would just put you up on a shelf, shower you with gifts, throw you snacks and amazing books when you need them, and then pull you down off that shelf when I just need some words of wisdom and inspirational Ela-isms!!! You keep it all too real, my friend!!

Yes! That sounds great! When everyone gushes like a book like this, I can't pass it up. Just let me know whenever, and we'll read it!

*jumps up and down while splattering tomato juice on Paula*

Sorry Paula, Robin threw tomatoes at me and I am not sure why.

message 763: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Jean, if you loved Captive in the Dark, I think you will enjoy Consequences. You may not love Tony, but I think you will appreciate the story.

I would not describe this book as YA at all! So NA it is... carry on!

It's either about Wolfsong, being a Tony-Lover, or giving us a hard time to pick PNR for you???? YOU pick?

message 770: by Robin (new)

Robin Hill (robinhill) | 1528 comments It was either for calling me out on Thoughtless or hating Wolfsong. I can't decide.

message 771: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments lol We do love your bluntness. :) And yes, EVEN WITH THAT, it's sweet in compared to Consequences. Yes, I'm jaded. I read Bertrice Small and her interesting stuff at the age of fourteen (First book, Skye O'Malley)! I've been reading Stockholm syndrome stuff since the same age. I can honestly say, JADED. :D

Nay (4ukcats) Lisa--You haven't read Thoughtless?!!! OMG!!!

message 776: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments I can't believe it either, Nay!

message 777: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Lisa, I'm dying to see what you think of Thoughtless. All time fave of mine.

I think the problem with a lot of these older fan faves is that if you read them NOW they just dont seem as good. I'm not sure why (maybe we have just read too many similiar things at this point and have OD'd?) but it makes me sad.

I sure hope anyone reading Thoughtless, Slammed or Consequences for the first time now can get the joy out of them that I did.

I agree completely, Leslie, and I was concerned about the same thing. I also thing it does NOT help that so many people talk about how awesome it is, so our expectations are sky high going in.

I'd say for Lisa, let yourself remember that the heroine is written a certain way because she needs to be for the book to be what it is--remember that like many young people, she's naive and inexperienced (and stupid at times), and let the angst carry you away because that's why people loved it so much.

message 779: by Ela (new)

message 784: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellesantiago) | 299 comments So many old 5 star reads I wouldn't give 5 stars to today.

message 785: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellesantiago) | 299 comments Mostly in contemporary genre. Tairen Soul, Wolfsong, etc will ALWAYS be 5 star reads. Different. So many emotions.!

message 786: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellesantiago) | 299 comments I loved Thoughtless, at the time: now I can't remember any details!

message 787: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) I re-read Thoughless and loved it even more the 2nd time. I think it'll always be one of my absolute favorites! But, yes, I definitely agree--there are probably many others that I wouldn't 5-star now.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Michelle wrote: "So many old 5 star reads I wouldn't give 5 stars to today."

Me too! I bought the audio of the Walk of Shame series thinking I'd finish up that old series with a good narrator.

1. I was tricked! The sample featured the male narrator. But after I bought it I found a 2nd female narrator that has the most annoying nasally voice.

2. The audio doesn't have "book breaks" so there was no way to skip the first book I'd already read. Had to start from the beginning.

3. How did I not remember Slade was straight-up erotica?! I 5-starred it when I originally read it. I dnf'd it this time around. The h was TSTL.

Holy crap! Did I really think that was a five star read a few years ago? Who was I???

message 789: by [deleted user] (new)

Slade was a dnf when it came out, for me.

Thoughtless is my April book. Ive had it for years, but not sure how much I will like it. We will see.

If the h &h seem too immature and so forth ill probably sit here and raise my eyebrow at you all that love it but will not touch YA, lol.

message 790: by Nay (last edited Apr 06, 2017 06:58AM) (new)

Nay (4ukcats) bev--it's definitely NOT ya. No worries there! I would consider it NA, however. I *think* they're early 20's??

message 791: by Ela (new)

Ela | 4291 comments Slade = Some variation of the word Fuck repeated 573 times....

message 792: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments I'm usually pretty generous with my ratings, but looking back, yeah, some of them were not 5 stars compared to more recent books I've read!

I can't believe Lisa hasn't read Thoughtless. Truthfully, I didn't hate the h as much as some people did.

So, I've met Tony........

message 793: by Nay (last edited Apr 06, 2017 07:04AM) (new)

Nay (4ukcats) I never read the Walk of Shame series.

I think what happened is that thousands of women who'd read Twilight and loved it were craving sex in their books, and all these authors dumped them on us at once (under the label of 'NA'), and we went crazy like rabid beasts! Now that the market is so super-saturated with them, we realize that half of them actually SUCKED.

Nay, I love YA.

I just know some wont read it thinking hs drama and immature protagonist, but devour indie NA.
To be quite honest indi NA and some trad or indoe CR is much more along those lines. Much more geared to the angst factor than YA.

Jean--I didn't hate her either. I actually identified with her--I made plenty of stupid, embarrassingly similar, decisions at that age.
