Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I read a few chapters of The Way of Kings over the weekend. This morning I saw that next up was a Shallan chapter...

...so I started Half a King.

message 2: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You're killing me, Chris! LOL

Are you not enjoying it?

message 3: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I have a huge stack of library books at home...

but I just ordered 4 contemporary romances from Amazon. O_O

Let's just say...I blew my book budget for June already. :(

But I read a book! I read a contemporary romance by Julie James and I LOVED IT. I was SO EXCITED that I read a book. Picked up another book (different author, etc) and crashed again. :( SO I ordered the rest in the Julie james series.

message 4: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm reading three books right now. Technically.

I'm liking them all, in various ways, but none are really begging me to pick them up. *sigh*

message 5: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments In parts, definitely. When it's good, it's really good. I actually prefer the flashback scenes to the current time, because nothing has happened in current time.

Damn, it could use an editor. Though that's not likely to happen in this series, as it seems he inherited Jordan's Bloated Book Series contract with Tor.

message 6: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments I'm continuing The War of Flowers by Tad Williams. Sadly, I haven't gotten in much reading lately, and it's an 800+ page book, so I've barely scratched the surface. :(

I can't really argue that it was long, but I never really FELT like it was long. I was just so absorbed in it. I hope I feel the same way when I re-read it. Whenever that is.

Oooh. I hated that one. Solid DNF for me. Please, tell me what you think.

*sad laugh*

Why is it that some authors feel they no longer need real editing?

message 10: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Does anyone ever notice that a certain book will suddenly begin to pop up everywhere for them? I'd heard of Wesley Chu before, but now it seems that whenever I turn around I hear about an author reading The Lives of Tao or doing a panel with Chu at a Con, etc. The same with Koko Takes a Holiday. I've added both to my tbr, but they just keep nagging at my brain. Has anyone read them? Wisdom, advice...

Personally I wouldn't recommend The Lives of Tao. I can see why people like it but for me it seemed to be a really interesting idea that ran out of steam half-way through. I have noticed it seems to be getting a lot of mentions at the moment though so maybe I missed something :)

message 12: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 63 comments I've been neglecting my reading. I'm still reading Dust, which I'm enjoying a lot. I also started listening to The Strain on audio. Ron Perlman is a GREAT narrator. He's actually what moved me to pick it up.

message 13: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Lives of Tao was ok. Decent setup, nice idea, quick read. Pacing and writing just weren't as polished as I'd prefer. Generous 3 star afternoon read, though.

message 14: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Hmm...

I trust both of your opinions implicitly. Perhaps I'll leave this book and wait for him to start a new series. Maybe after he's gotten a bit more writing under his belt, he'll be better.

Thanks guys!

My girlfriend loves Julie James books - says they all rock. So guess you cant go wrong there...

How is Half a king so far? Eager to read it.

PS: I felt the same way when reading Shallan chapters in WOK, but that all changed with WOR - she's way more interesting now.

message 17: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Half a King is pretty cool so far. There are some tropes, but Abercrombie handles them well.

Good to hear about Shallan. I don't hate her chapters, but I don't feel compelled to dive in.

ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (allykennedy) | 168 comments Mr. Mercedes is out today, is anyone else interested in a Buddy Read thread for this book?

I plan on starting today or tomorrow.

I hope so. I'm at a point where I'm desperate to read something.

message 20: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm currently reading The Outcasts, but I'm find this "taut, thrilling adventure" story more of a "dull, boring character" story.

I've read some reviews which say it picks up some in the second half, but other reviews saying not nearly enough...

So now I'm debating about whether I want to push through or dump it - especially as I just picked up a stack of stuff from the library.

message 21: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Definitely, Ally....

message 22: by Paolo (new)

Paolo (ppiazzesi) | 166 comments I started Saga, Volume 1 and it is so. fucking. good.

message 23: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments New King, eh? Might have to read it.

message 24: by Laurel (new)

Laurel It looks interesting.

message 25: by Paul (new)

Paul I'd forgotten it was coming out and then it appeared on my kindle this morning. Love when that happens!

message 26: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Gah... I have too many books that I want to read and not enough time to read them in.

FOF:
The Last Policeman
The Amulet of Samarkand

FOF Buddy:
Skin Game
Mr. Mercedes

HF:
The Sword and the Passion

Other:
Brutal Youth, which I picked up at BookCon
The Fever, which I picked up from a free audio download card at BookCon

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I think I might get 'Mr. Mercedes' for Jer, and let him tell me if he thinks it's something I'll like or not. :>

Karen | 55 comments For various reasons (including, oh the tiny matter of knee surgery) my credit card is feeling somewhat used and abused. In fact, it is whimpering in a corner eyeing me accusingly. Admittedly, one of the other reasons for that is my bad habit of clicking that oh-so-easy-to-indulge-impulses 1-Click purchase button on Amazon. I do however have quite a number of unread books on my bookshelves and on my iPad PLUS I just received the Hugo voters package which includes something like 8 novels and the ENTIRE Wheel of Time series as well as various novellas, novelettes, anthologies etc. My very responsible plan is to focus on those many books I already have (I initially promised I wouldn't get anything new, but overnight I have decided I would allow myself a teeny bit of leeway).

This week I plan to start Hard Magic (came in the Hugo packet along with Book 2 and Book 3, which is nominated) and The Last Policeman. I'm currently reading A Different Blue and Saga, Volume 1 is already on my iPad calling my name.

Wow. Your CC sounds like mine, lol.

But your backlog O_O

message 33: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I really enjoyed the Grimnoire trilogy, Karen. I hope you like it!

message 34: by Karen (new)

Karen | 55 comments Mrs J, you don't want to see my backlog. But at least it means I have good stuff to look forward to!

I think the Hugo membership was the best £25($41) I ever spent if I just count in terms of the stuff in the packet. The Grimnoire series looks like fun Becky and I was so glad they included all three! I am way too type A to start from Book 3

message 35: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You and me, both, Karen! At BookCon, I picked up an ARC of the first book in a new spinoff series, and I'm thinking that I need to read the core series before I can read that one. LOL

But with the Grimnoire, it's all one big story arc, so they couldn't really give you book 3 and expect you to read it on its own. The first book, yeah, that could stand alone, but the 3rd requires having read the previous ones... so unless they wanted to shoot themselves in the foot, giving all three makes sense. ;)

I need to look into this Hugo membership... :D

message 36: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments So far June has been a busy month for me with not as much reading as I would like and am used to doing. And I can't believe it's June already! Crazy.

Right now I'm reading Spindle's End, a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, I've never read McKinley before and there are times that the book reminds me of Pratchett's Witch books - though fairies instead of witches, and not as good. Okay. It's an okay book.

message 37: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Regarding books & budgets -

I just want enough money to buy every book I want to read, or will ever want, or may want to read at a later time and enough time to read them. Is that too much to ask??!!

;)

Is there that much money in the world...? ;)

message 39: by Audrey Jane (new)

Audrey Jane | 12 comments I click the 'buy' button first and then I reflect upon my purchase. You see, my fingers are itching to just click that button already. I can't resist. I'm so weak! There're quite some purchases I regret.

Lately I've been reading books that didn't really catch my attention. I started Howl's Moving Castle a couple of days ago since I tremendously enjoyed the anime. I just finished it yesterday and will definitely read the sequels. I might also check out the author's Chrestomanci series (Charmed Life). Has anyone read this series yet?

message 40: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I loved the Chrestomanci series. Almost, but not quite, as much as Howl's Moving Castle, and more than Howl's sequels.

message 41: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I'm working on my re-read of the Robin Hobb Fool and Fitz books in preparation for Fool's Assassin which comes out later this year. I'm just reading the Assassin and the Tawny Man series, I don't have time to do the Liveship and Dragon ones right now.

But damn. So I'm just finishing up book one of Tawny Man, Fool's Errand... This is either the 3rd or 4th time I've read it and it still kills me every fricken time.

BIG SPOILER FOR FOOL'S ERRAND, DANGER! Do not click if you haven't read it! (view spoiler)

I read that part last night before bed thinking it was my 4th time through, I'd be fine.. Nope. Started whimpering and then balled and sobbed like a baby for like 20 minutes after I stopped reading. Sobbingly tried to explain to my fiance why I was crying and that I wasn't sad, not really, but that it was just so beautiful.. LOL. He thought I was looney.

Just an aside.. I am NOT a crier. That's why I love Robin Hobb and the Fool / Fitz series. They make me feel so much.. Definitely my most favorite books of all time.

message 42: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments You're making me want to read the Fool books now..

message 43: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I wanted to reread the Fitz books but I just don't think I have the time. I have so many other books to get through that I'm trying to cut down on rereads. But... It's tempting. Really tempting.

I don't cry often either. So the authors who can get me to cry are definitely doing something right. I love that feeling. Of getting into a story so much that it brings out that much emotion from me. If I cry, the book is automatically a 4½/5 star rating.

message 44: by Eon Windrunner (new)

Eon Windrunner (eonwindrunner) Im busy reading those books for the 1st time! Almost done with book 3 of the Farseer trilogy. Tawny man next I guess. Not sure if that follows the Farseer one though...

message 45: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (last edited Jun 04, 2014 06:36AM) (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Technically, Liveship comes in between Farseer and Tawny Man. It's set a different part of the world with minimal cross over. As a mega fan, I've read the three series two ways.. Once with Tawny Man immediately following Farseer, and once with Liveship in between. You definitely get the most out of it (depth wise) if you read Liveship in between. That said, it's not vital. Just depends on how into the world and characters you are.
