message 102: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have House of Leaves to read... but I'm a little daunted by its... unconventional format.

message 103: by Sinistmer (new)

Sinistmer | 212 comments Taking a brief sci/fi fantasy break to read Midnight in Peking: How the Murder of a Young Englishwoman Haunted the Last Days of Old China. It's about a murder of an English girl in Peking, just before WWII. It is quite gripping!

I have a huge pile of books to choose from after that (and it will include Alchemist of Souls)

message 104: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Read California Bones today after seeing it on a list from io9. Interesting world and decent ideas, but the characters just didn't connect with me. Seemed rather flat.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Dang Jackie. You know I'm working my 100 hour week and you start our Buddy Read? :(

Kidding. I can start it soon

Maybe next week...

message 106: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Don't rush. You'll probably start and pass me...again. :P Sourcery is on my nook, but lately I've been in the mood to read paper books. Out of the hundreds of books I own I haven't been able to settle on which to read. O_o

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I've barely read anything!!! I have a ton of books from the library plus my own not inconsiderable TBR-Owned books...but I just can't get into anything. :(

Rushing won't be an issue. It will be awhile before I can read more than a few pages without falling asleep.

On the bright side, I'm down to the last 100 pages of TWoK.

message 109: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Last 100 pages? So that's at least another month then? :P

message 110: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) MEAN.

message 111: by Stephanie (last edited Jun 19, 2014 05:42PM) (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 119 comments Just finished a 3 book series by Anne McCaffrey called Crystal Singer. This is a reread. Not as good as I remember it, but still fond of it. I had surgery a couple of weeks ago and my brain has actually been kindof loopy even before that, but doing better now. I'm going back to listening to Ghost Story by Jim Butcher tomorrow. Right now, I cannot multitask. I lose track of the story.

but I just can't get into anything. :(
I think everybody has fluctuations during the year where they just can't get into reading. I have 8 books started and just couldn't get into any of them last month. Now I'll try to get to Ghost Story so I can move on that list.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Ala wrote: "Last 100 pages? So that's at least another month then? :P"

Hahaha...Yes, that was mean.

If every week was like this week, it would take at least a month. My 100 hour week will be finished in about three hours, so I'll have some time to relax and read finally.

Though I'll probably be too sleepy to read more than a page or two for a few days.

message 113: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments So... Good news... Bad news. Good news, I've been working. Bad news, no time to read. Not like I'm used to anyway. And as I mentioned earlier this month, I'm having a hard time reading on my nook tablet. I'm on the computer 7+ hours a day and by the time I get home my eyes are done for.

Anyway - yesterday I finally finished Before I Go To Sleep - I had to skim it though. The idea was okay, and I did like the ending. But it really dragged for me. A woman has amnesia and every morning when she wakes she doesn't remember who or where she is. So- every chapter feels the same as the one before. It would've worked better as a shorter story.

Before that I read The Enchanted because I read it was fantasy/realism and I've been into those kinds of books lately. But to be honest - I didn't find it to be fantasy at all and I was disappointed. I've read better prison stories. And there was no characterization to speak of. (In my opinion - most readers seem to love the book.)

Now I'm reading Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend. It's about a boy with aspergers from the POV of his imaginary friend. I like it so far.

Neil H | 3 comments Anna wrote: "I'm about to read House of Leaves this month and was wondering if anyone here might have read it. Any thoughts?"

I have had this book on my shelf for almost a year. Like Becky said, I'm also a bit intimidated by it's format.

I'm having a heck of a time reading anything lately. I have four books started and none are to the half way point.

Maybe when the World Cup is over, I'll dive back in. Any spare time I've had has been consumed by watching the games.

message 115: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm working on 3 books right now.
The Last Policeman - which is almost done, and FINALLY... because the more I listen the more I'm like, "Really...? -_- "

Then I've got The Souls of Black Folk as my In-the-car-and-waiting-around book. I pick it up and read a little bit whenever I'm out and need something to read for a few minutes.

Then I re-started The Color of Magic, FINALLY. I had started it ages ago, but the formatting of the ebook was making it terrible to read, so now I've got a better one and it's.... interesting. LOL

message 116: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 506 comments I love The Color of Magic :)

message 117: by Christine (new)

Christine (inhalesbookslikepopcorn) I finished Authority which I thought was not as good as Annihilation and started another scifi book Old Man's War, I am on a roll with scifi just now. I can't wait for Scalzi's Lock In to come out in August. I hope I will be ready for another fantasy read afterwards either being Emperor Mage or The Amulet of Samarkand

message 119: by Eon Windrunner (last edited Jun 22, 2014 11:43PM) (new)

Eon Windrunner (eonwindrunner) Just finished Captain's Fury and loved it. Really want to carry on with that series, but thought I need to mix it up a bit, so started Prince of Fools. Enjoying it so far.

message 120: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Just finished Jaws. One of my favorite movies of all time, and one of those rare instances where the movie is actually better than the book.

Read that years ago - movie is definitely better! Cant say that often.

message 122: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Jumping back into fantasy now with Prince of Fools. I enjoyed Lawrence's other series but so far this book feels like book #4 of that instead of a new series... It is supposed to be a new series... Right??

message 123: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) *shrug* Dunno anything about his books. LOL

I'm almost finished with The Color Of Magic and umm... yeah. It's different. I'm not really finding it funny. I realized this after I googled if there was a movie version (I know some of the books have been adapted), and I found a Youtube clip which made me laugh after about 4 seconds. I realized that I hadn't really even cracked a smile while reading this, which kinda sucks. I've been more confused and just playing along hoping it all makes sense at the end. Now I'm getting toward the end of the book and I'm not sure it does.

Is this supposed to be like 4 interconnected mini-stories or something? Because maybe I'm just reading it in the wrong mindset and that's the problem. I'm expecting novel and what I'm reading is actually a collection of separate stories that are only linked by setting and main characters.

I DNF'ed the Color of Magic and then read the Tiffany Aching stories (the first two, at least). Those were much more to my liking.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm reading...nothing for the most part. I am reading a romance but more because I read a different romance I'd liked.

Pfft. NOW you tell me. When I'm 75% done. At this point I have to finish it.

message 128: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments In my defense, I've always said the earlier books in Discworld - and the Rincewind books in general - are the weakest (in my opinion), and it's one of the few series I tell people not to worry overly about reading in order.

(Actually, it's kinda like a bell curve - the middle books are generally my faves, with a few exceptions here and there.)

message 129: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) There's just so many... it's easier if I just read them in publish order. LOL

message 130: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I tried them in publish order too, and stalled out because I wasn't a huge fan of them and they weren't getting better. I think Mort or Sourcery or something like that was the last I read..

message 131: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I see. Well this is encouraging. LOL

message 132: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Jackie and I read Mort last month, and we're due to start Sourcery in May.

message 133: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Fair point. This is the only series where I had to make myself an Excel spreadsheet to mark off the books I've read and the books I own. (Though this was partially 'cause I lost many of the books I had when I moved back from Ireland and asshole tossed my stuff.)

message 134: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Chris wrote: "Jackie and I read Mort last month, and we're due to start Sourcery in May."

Next May?

message 135: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments At the speed I'm going, probably. Lol

But no. This May. I kept the future tense because I'm resisting the year slipping away.

You have to start, slow poke. I already started it. About halfway in.

I'm actually enjoying the series. First two were a bit confusing and tiresome to read because of the formatting and footnotes. But I started to enjoy the others more. Surprisingly, I'm finding the footnotes in Sourcery funnier than the story itself.

message 139: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Dammit Ala. I finished TWOK finally!

message 140: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Hah, sorry man. Have a cupcake, I stole it from Becks.

Gonna start WoR? The Shallan Chapters are actually pretty good.

message 141: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I was wondering where my cupcake went. >_<

Nicki, I think that explains a lot. I'm not really familiar enough at all with any of those authors or their books to have gotten any of the jokes. I've read.. one, maybe two McCaffrey book(s), and about the same with Lovecraft (I really WANT to like his writing more than I actually do. *sigh*). The others... *shrug* I don't even think I could name anything they've written.

So. yeah. It seems that I am not the intended audience for this one. Shame. I disliked A Night In The Lonesome October for the same kind of thing. If you're in the know and get the references, it's great... but if not, it's just baffling.

message 142: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Sorry Becks. You can have the cupcake I stole from Colleen... <_<

I'm thinking of doing this House of Leaves book everyone seems to dread. You gonna give it a shot?

What? I didn't even know I *had* a cupcake! WTF, man?!

message 144: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Is it the same cupcake you stole from me? Did you just steal my cupcake back and regift it to me? O_O

I think I am going to read it at some point... of course now I've just been challenged to read Requiem For A Dream in another thread, so... not yet. LOL

message 145: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments We own House of Leaves, and I've always kind of meant to read it - especially since I'm a fan of his sister, Poe - but I know Jer read it and didn't seem too impressed by it, iirc.

message 146: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Maybe >_>

Think I'll go ahead with House. If I don't make it back, it's all your fault.

message 147: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Wow. If you don't make it back, it's because your cupcake karma caught up with you!

You have a good point. Color of Magic is actually one of my favorites in the series. But I'm also a big fan of Lovecraft and Leiber. So maybe that's why.
