Four college grads can't get jobs and decide to form a kidnapping ring. Things go okay until they grab a guy whose family is 'connected.' After that, the gang goes on the run from the mafia and law enforcement. Pretty good thriller. 3 stars.

This is a true crime story. In 1985 Nancy Newman and her two young daughters were murdered in their Anchorage, Alaska apartment. Nancy's nephew was tried for the crimes. This book consists mostly of interrogation and trial transcripts, with comments by the author. 3 stars.

This middle-grade mystery, narrated by Bowser the dog, is a fun book (that adults will like as well). In this story, 11-year-old Birdie Gaux investigates some odd occurrences with her pooch, Bowser. 3 stars.

Our bodies are covered with microbes - inside and out - and it's hard to fathom all the ways they help us and allow us to survive. In this book Ed Yong explores the world of microorganisms with an emphasis on 'microbiomes' - the aggretation of bacteria, viruses, etc. associated with living organisms. Fascinating stuff told with a nice sense of humor. 5 stars.

This audiobook (which I got on Hoopla) is a short colorful biography of Doyle, best known for his Sherlock Holmes stories. Doyle had a varied, interesting life, described with humor and heart in this book. 3.5 stars

Based on the author's blog this book - about Allie Brosh's dogs and her life - is hilarious, relatable, and touching. I read it after seeing it recommended on GR....and I'm glad I did. 3.5 stars.

This book is about the Baxley family of South Carolina, who carry the gene for a terribly debilitating neurodegenerative disease. If a blood test could tell you whether or not you had a deadly mutation would you want to find out? Amanda Baxley has to decide. Good book about the illness and the family. 4 stars.

After Cass fails to assist a woman stranded on a lonely road in the rain, she hears the woman has been murdered. Cass's guilt and shock - as well as her fear that she's getting early onset dementia - push her toward a mental breakdown. This second psychological suspense novel by Paris is just okay for me.
3 stars

Have you seen the movie martin?"
No I haven't. I would like to watch it but not now. I have to wait a little bit...

I thoroughly enjoyed this screenplay for the movie "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."
Magizoologist Newt Scamander comes to NYC with a case of magical creatures. When some of his animals escape, there's a danger that 'no-mags' will cop to the fact that there are witches and wizards around. This is really bad, because some people want to wipe out magical beings. 4 stars.

At the height of his success Dr. Vijay Malur fell down a flight of stairs, broke his bones, sustained a serious concussion, and had quadruple bypass surgery. Unable to work, Malur went bankrupt. In this inspirational book Malur describes his road to recovery and eventual hike to Mt. Everest Base Camp when he was 60 years old. Good book that could provide hope to people who've experienced severe trauma. 3 stars.

Josie Buhrman left her hometown after her father was murdered, her mother joined a cult, and her twin betrayed her. Now, a new podcast about Josie's dad - questioning the guilt of the convicted killer - is upsetting Josie's world. Okay story but the characters aren't too likable. 3 stars

This book is part of the Hogarth Shakespeare Project, in which famous authors re-tell and modernize the bard's great works. Hag-Seed is a modern version of 'The Tempest.' Atwood's book is very inventive and creative....well worth reading if you like this kind of thing. 4 stars.

People all over the world go crazy - and commit murder and suicide - when they see a mysterious 'it.' Thus everyone has to barricade themselves inside and wear blindfolds on their brief outings. One woman, Malorie, embarks on a trip with two 4-year-olds, to try to reach a safe(r) haven. The book is very popular but for me it's just 'eh.' 3 stars.

In this memoir Caitlyn talks about being a transgender woman, and includes Jenner's memories from childhood on. It's clear that Jenner's gender dysphoria had a profound effect on her entire life. Recommended if the subject interests you. 3 stars.

A high school senior named Shelby has a car accident that leaves her best friend in an irreversible coma. Shelby almost can't go on, and isolates herself....but eventually takes tiny steps toward recovery. Good book about healing after tragedy. 3.5 stars.

This non-fiction book provides an overview of non-mainstream internet sites, including thing like: online supermarkets for drugs; child porn; white supremacists; cam-models (people who 'perform' online); etc. Interesting, but not as 'secret' as I expected. 3 stars.

In this memoir, Carrie combines amusing stories about her life with the more serious story of her drug/alcohol addiction and bipolar disorder. Good book for Carrie's fans and people interested in mental illness. 3.5 stars
