Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hello and welcome Chris!

The basics are fairly simple: you choose the book you want to read and you let us know for which cards it could fit, based on the requirements for the various cards (mentioned in the rules - take your time to take it all in, there are a lot of cards/letters after all) and then Annika and I will fit the book in a spot on the spreadsheet.

That's about it, really! :-)

Annika | 1412 comments E, you forgot the requirement to have fun! ;)
- or maybe that's a given?

Chris, what kinds of books do you read, we know you don't like the long ones (with you on that), but what do you like to read?

Ah ok. That sounds a lot simpler than I thought! Phew! Ha! Ha!

Mainly, fantasy, autobiography, some YA, some horror, and a lot of humour. I've recently discovered Christopher Moore and love his books! I also want to read (and re-read) some classics; Lord of the Flies, All Quiet on the Western Front, Catcher in the Rye. I'll basically read anything!

A lot of variety it seems like. Horror is something I really stay away from - I like to sleep at night ;) So if there will be horror related tasks, I'm happily handing those over to you :)
Fantasy books are good ones though, have you read the Kate Daniels books, or are you more into high fantasy?

Does that mean you are doubly mad at me?
I do feel responsible for most of the team names. Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have said that...

Do you know what? I actually never liked Terry Pratchett's books. I've tried three or four but only ever liked Feet of Clay. I read things like Steven Ericson's Malazan Books of the Fallen series; Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates et cetera, which goes against everything I've said about not liking long books as most of them are over 600 pages. I suppose since I've started doing challenges here I've gone off longer books as it is harder to meet my challenge goals! Nuts, I know.

Nope, we totally get nuts over challenges here - you're only considered nuts in RL, here you're just one of us ;)

I've only read one Terry Pratchett book, but it wasn't my cup of tea, so I've stayed away from the rest of them, It was just too out there for my tastes.

message 120: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Lol indeed, Chris! The Malazan books aren't exactly short ;-) I've had the first one sitting on my shelf for ages as I bought it years ago, thinking it sounded interesting, but or some reason I never actually read it.

Terry Pratchett is very particular but I may have read the right book to get into it. A friend of mine thrust Hogfather at me when he heard I had never read Pratchett and told me to go home and read it ;-) I loved it. Death is one of my all-time favourite characters.

As for liking Kate Daniels... weeeeeeell... we might make an exception if you don't like it. Maybe. ;-)

Hello everyone!
I'm Ginger from Poland. I'm so excited that I could join you! :D
Actually I joined Goodreads only last summer and I didn't have opportunity to participate in any challenge. So it's my first time and I hope that I will understand all rules.

I love reading books and discuss them. And I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett's books. Even if the first one I read wasn't so good, I fall in love with books about City Watch. Sam Vimes is my favourite character.

I'm looking forward to get to know everyone! :)

I'm looking forward to the challenge. I'm new here, but I think I get the idea. Here's a link to my UNO 2017 shelf.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments So where in the world is everyone from? I see Sweden, England and Poland. I'm in Hawaii, USA. Sometimes the time zone thing throws me off a bit in the big challenges. I'm often all alone at night & when I wake up on the weekends, everything has been decided without me. During the week, I can't look at Goodreads till I come home from work... Or at least I'm not supposed to look :)

message 124: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I think I'm with you, Chris. I've been trying hard to like Terry Pratchett's books, but not doing too well there. I love Christopher Moore! My favorites are Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal and The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror. I find I also enjoy Neil Gaiman. I'll read just about anything. I give anything new 100 pages. If I still hate it, I'll abandon it because life is too short. Unless it's for a challenge. Then I'll just suck it up & finish. I'll complain the whole time, but I will finish!

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hello and welcome, Ginger and Christine!

Glad you found your way to us :-)

message 126: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hmm, I only read one Neil Gaiman book (Stardust) and I found it to be very disappointing. I have to add to that though that I saw the movie first and enjoyed it quite a bit, so when I finally read the book, I found it to be a tad dull.

I did read his collaboration with Terry Pratchett however and absolutely loved it - Good Omens.

Well it seems like you're online at similar times than us. This is basically morning hours for me - I got into work about half an hour ago and it is now almost 9am.
And I'm from Luxembourg, since you asked :-)

LaurLa | 1005 comments I'm in Indiana, USA... smack dab in the middle (well, sort of). I'm US Eastern time zone, though (the very edge of it).

message 137: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Alright ladies and gent of Team Kate Daniels!

*rubs hands*

Let's get a little serious, shall we?

The challenge starts on February 1st and only books started on that day will count towards the Uno cards. So I suggest you try to finish any current reads you have before that date, otherwise you might have to wait a while before finishing it, depending on how you handle your reading time and speed.

What we require from you:
If there is a book (or maybe 2/3?) you already know you want to read in February, let us know which one(s). And it would be great if you could let us know which cards they would work for - and why (character names, title, author, main setting, # in series).

Also, if you have a moment or two, feel free to compare books with your team mates to see which books could be used for reverse.
Reminder: For the reverse card, a team member needs to read a book that has already been read by another team member (not limited to books read within the challenge time frame).

Otherwise, you could just list a few recommendations of books you have read - as we have partially been doing already. I'm pretty sure our TBR piles won't mind having a few more books added to them ;-)

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! :-)

message 138: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 1005 comments Do you want us to put planned books here or in the spreadsheet (assuming there is a planning tab in the spreadsheet)?

message 139: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Just put them here, LaurLa. Annika and I will do the rest.

Preferably with as much information for various cards as possible so we can switch around if necessary.

I think I may be one of the very, very few people to not have liked The Book Thief :-/

message 142: by San (last edited Jan 26, 2017 10:35AM) (new)

San (btsentence) | 119 comments I haven't read The Book Thief yet and it's on my shelf so I can read it for the reverse card.

I have a question about character's name/surname. Does it have to be one of main character or anyone in the book?

message 143: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments It can be anyone in the book provided they actually have a few lines and give at least a little something to the story. A passing reference to a character, or a memory of someone will not be enough.

message 144: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I will definitely read Magic Bites as a reverse! :)
I was making my list last night. I'll turn in my finalized list this evening. So many decisions!

just curious, Chris... What dis you not like about it?

message 146: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Wooh!! Good choice on the reverse, Lauri :-)

It was I who didn't like The Book Thief. I found the story not engaging enough and I expected so much more from a premise stating that the book was narrated from Death's point of view. Besides the constant translations were bugging me. There are better ways of including explanations of foreign languages used within the text than the way Zusak did it. (I speak German, so it was increasingly frustrating to see it all double.) The characters weren't my cup of tea either.

But as I said, I'm the exception on this one, so don't take my opinion too much into consideration for those who still want to read it.

Jumping in from another team to support you Eldarwen (saw thread on my feed).... I read this before it became ultra popular and was subsequently made into a movie. I was not at all impressed. I didn't feel that it captured the true emotions of the time. Perhaps it is because I prefer to read non-fiction accounts of events from WWII. It lacked the emotion that I find in true accounts and a few fictional ones. I was generous and gave it three stars years ago, but if I was eating it today I probably would give it a 2.5.

As you say, just because us few didn't care for it, it shouldn't deter others, because we clearly are in the minority.

message 148: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Sometimes it's good to know though that we aren't alone in our opinion, deviating from the masses ;-)
And I do have to agree. The emotion doesn't always feel quite right in the book. Something substantial and important is missing somehow.

I feel the same with To Kill a Mockingbird. I rated it four because I enjoyed it but I don't get what all the fuss is over it. I certainly wouldn't class it as a classic. I guess we all have different tastes. If we all liked the same thing it would be boring.

message 150: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Ok, I loved both The Book Thief and To Kill a Mockingbird. Granted, I read Mockingbird as a child & have not revisited. Sometimes I find that when you go back to read childhood favorites as an adult, your sensitivities have changed a bit. Maybe the language thing was a major factor for you, Eldarwen.
I just finished Silence by Shūsaku Endō which was translated from the Japanese. It was interesting, but I didn't really care for it & suspect it lost something in the translation...
