I'm voting for Gin! :)

You can't beat the opening line of the book: "My name is Gin, and I kill people" ;)

Annika | 1412 comments Lauri, just want to check with you - you have 7 books for our hands left to read, do you think you'll be able to finish them all by the end of the month or should we do some switching?

This one was a struggle! So many esoteric ideas, very sad and way to many footnotes!

I'm pretty good, but don't care if someone else finishes something that fits first...

I haven't started A Thousand Splendid Suns but...
I am almost finished with Scarlet which I am almost certain would work instead for a Reverse. Maybe I could switch those out?

Lol indeed!

I decided to go with the other one though ;-) Since I'm going to read it all day today and BSB shelf call is tonight.. I figured I'd keep Gin for bingo, just in case it fits the new shelf call - and both those books are an AMMP POFM so I wanted to read both this month still.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Oh, what did you think?

Is the book close to the movie? Or rather... the other way around ;-) I have to admit I've only ever seen the movie and have always enjoyed it.

message 809: by San (new)

San (btsentence) | 119 comments The book was good but to be honest I prefer movie which is rare. The writing is a little weird and sometimes it was hard to understand what is going on. But maybe I just don't get it.

The movie of course also has the added bonus of having Brad Pitt in splendid form ;-), and Edward Norton who is a spectacular actor.

Chris | 190 comments Finished Magic Bites. I gave it ⚜⚜⚜⚜.

Now on to Practical Demonkeeping for the March mini.

message 813: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Woot! Glad you enjoyed Magic Bites despite the lady-orientation :-)

Do you think you'll continue with the series?

message 814: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments I don't think so to be honest. The story was good but it was a bit too girlie for me. I think I'm going to try Harry Dresden at some point though.

message 815: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments You really should! I think you will like that better!

Fair warning though - if you listen to the audio, avoid public places. People tend to stare when you burst out laughing for no apparent reason ;)

message 816: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments That's OK. People tend to stare at me strangely anyway Ha! Ha!

message 817: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Lol! Well the audio won't make a difference then ;-)

message 818: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Agreed though, I also think you'll find Harry Dresden more to your liking.

One of the things I enjoy most about this series is the fact that the main character is male despite that there is a very urban fantasy element in it. There's just too much urban fantasy out there that caters to women.

message 819: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments On the other hand - when you go high fantasy it's the other way around.

message 820: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Very true. I'm trying to remember a high fantasy from a female point of view, but of course I'm drawing a blank now.

message 821: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Oh, right!!
I wasn't sure, but it IS classed as MPG high fantasy, and it is from a female point of view. A very enjoyable trilogy (which has a follow-up trilogy):

The Magicians' Guild (Black Magician, #1) by Trudi Canavan The Novice (Black Magician, #2) by Trudi Canavan The High Lord (Black Magician, #3) by Trudi Canavan

message 822: by San (new)

San (btsentence) | 119 comments Eldarwen, I agree! The Black Magician Trilogy is really good! Did you read The Traitor Spy Trilogy? It's on my TBR for so long time that I forget about it!

message 823: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I've only read the first one so far, but I think it's good! I'm hoping to read the other two in the near future.

It picks up several years after the story of the Black Magician trilogy, and while Sonea is still a huge part of the story, she isn't quite the main focus. Her son is more important in this. But a lot of the old characters are still around, and it was great to see them come to life again.

message 824: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Yes. Most high fantasy is male- orientated. LOTR, The Hobbit and the decalogy I read now and again; The Malazan Book of the Fallen series all have strong male protagonists.

message 825: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments I've always wanted to read the black magician trilogy but wasn't sure if it was any good. I might read the first one now.

message 826: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments Hehe, your TBR increases even more ;)

message 827: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments I know. I'm already up to 59. Small for some, I know, but considering it was 1 or 2 at the beginning of last year it's getting bad.

message 828: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments (Stands up) My name's Chris and I'm a bookaholic!

message 829: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments haha, and the more challenges you do, the more that list will grow.
And speaking of growing, give E a few minutes to get home and get on a computer, then I can almost guarantee she'll recommend and gush about Night Angel to you - you know, since we are speaking of high fantasy. ;)

Annika | 1412 comments *joins Chris and stand up*
My name is Annika, and I'm a bookaholic. Uno completely changed my reading 2 years ago. I went from ~50 books /year and now I can't keep track of them all. =P
(and I couldn't be happier about that)

ETA: Also, when I joined GR I wanted to keep my TBR <100 so that I could see myself actually getting to all of the books and reading them at some point.
Let's just say - that didn't last long.....

Annalisa | 1659 comments Wow, went and checked the spreadsheet after posting and you already had my book on there.

I hope there are enough letter options for scrabble. I'm not sure what letters we have that need to be filled. I saw something earlier about an "r" but I didn't think the horse that almost dies, Regent, counted as a character.

I noticed the book in my feed earlier and added it, figured I could update the info when you'd posted here :)

Right now we aren't too worried about certain letters - as long as the book will fit some of them. I'm thinking at the end of this week / beginning of next we'll have a better grasp of which letter we need. Right now we need as many books and letters as possible. We are trying to fill the longer words first and the 5 letter words second, so looking at those might give you an indication what to look for.

Our words:
strewth (7), knapper (7), berserk (7) synonym (7), Fjeld (5), Synth (5), Myrrh (5) Nebs (4)

message 834: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Oooooh yes, Annika is totally right!!

I loooove gushing about the Night Angel trilogy!! :-DDD Such an amazing series!!

*nudges Chris* You'll want to start with The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks :-))

Fair warning though: there are a lot, and I really do mean a lot of characters in the series and it can be hard at first to keep track of them all, but it's an awesome series. Lots of world building, a lot of story, a number of twists, sarcasm and great characters, especially characters you like even though not everything they do is all that likeable. It's just awesome.

And the romance element is kept in check (and that is the case for the Black Magician trilogy as well, by the way).
