Hello Brea!
Yes we're so glad to have you in the group! We always welcome new members, no matter how big the group gets, every member is important and I like to especially recognize those who do introduce themselves, like you. So thank you for your comment!

I'm glad you love art and are an artist. Me, I can only appreciate the works of others, this is why I focused the group more on art appreciation but, I do like to recognize and appreciate the talents of members of the group, too. So if you're not too hesitant, we have a thread for people to display their own work, called Talent of the Members:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
and I would love to see your work! Feel free to create your own thread.
I'm really happy you jumped right in to comment and introduce yourself! We aren't too overwhelming with comments, I promise, even though it's a large group. We have a lot of lurkers but we have fun. I look forward to hearing more from you!

If you ever have any questions, comments or suggestions for the group or for me, there is a thread in this folder to post it or you can PM me personally and I will always respond. Don't hesitate to send me a message if you have any problems whatsoever. I want everyone to enjoy the group. Really, the overall intent is to have fun! Again, welcome!

But, to get back to my love of art, I have put together a collection of 40 of my original paintings into a coffee table book!
So this group really sounds perfect for me!
Looking forward to reading about other members of this group!
Thanks for letting me join!!

Well, Hello Kelly! It is so nice to meet you! And thank you for your descriptive introduction. It's nice to meet an artist such as yourself! Especially for me who is not an artist in the least!

Don't get me wrong, we have probably more artists in the group than not, this is an art appreciation group so we have a bit of everything in everyone!

But to have your work all in a book! A coffee table book at that, how exciting!

We do have a folder where you can even create your own thread and you can introduce your book and if you want to, you can share some of your paintings with us!
It's called Talent of the Members: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM, OR in the General folder there is a thread for questions, or you can write a question in that Talent...Folder, just wherever, if you have any concerns.

I'm so excited and looking forward to seeing your work and hearing more from you in the future! Again, welcome! Let's have some fun!

Hi Logan! It's very nice to meet you! I'm glad you clarified your gender, though I think it's really sad that you'd have to do that. I bet you get mixed messages like that a lot. But I think you have a really cool name for a female!
I'm happy you left some of your work in the other folder and that you told us it was there. I'm going to go check it out next.
I hope you enjoy the group, learn and just have fun with us!
Welcome!

Hi Logan, me again. I just tried to look at your pictures. First, if you put them on your profile, it is set to private so I couldn't go in to see your pictures. I would love to friend you so I could see your pictures, but do you want the whole group to do that?

Here is a folder just for members to introduce their work to the rest of the group. It's called 'Talent of the Members' https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Here you can open your own thread and post whatever you feel of your own work. I'm looking forward to seeing it! Thank you for being willing to share!

Heather | 8548 comments Frankie wrote: "Hello, I'm Frankie. I've just been reading through some of the introductions and finding out what a fascinating group you have here. I've been hoping to broaden my horizons lately by learning more ..."

Hello Frankie! Welcome to the group! I'm glad you came forward and introduced yourself. I always like to know who joins and I like to know a bit about our new members (and other members who have been silent or lurkers, too)

Anyway, those are some broad interests. Maybe we can delve into some of them in a way to connect them with art. We have some art history in here and we have a whole folder dedicated to music. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... It has various threads. You can peruse that and we may or may not have something that you are interested in. If not, feel free to open your own thread and see what we all can add to it! We have some very knowledgeable members here!

I don't think we have much on philosophy I'm sorry to say. If you have any philosophical questions that could relate to art and start a good discussion, let me know and I could even create a folder for you for philosophy alone! Then you could create as many threads as you want to and challenge us to really think about what you have to say and question! I'd be interested in that group, so if you do want me to open a folder for philosophy, if you think you could have some questions related to art, I would love to do that. Again, let me know! You can send me message at any time.

Dirk has the folder "Picture of the Day" he's been doing that for a couple of years now, I'm not sure how long, I'm sure he knows. :) https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... He delegates topics according to months. He has a certain topic for every month so you could ask him if he has covered the Pre-Raphaelites. I can't remember. Feel free to send him a message, too I'm sure he would be happy to respond. He's a great member of this group and sometimes when I'm away, he keeps it going for me!

I'm glad you're here! I hope you can look through the folders and threads and find some interesting things here. There is a lot to discover! This group was formed 12 years ago now so we have quite a bit of everything here.

So look around at your leisure, and most of all, Have Fun!

Hey Frankie,
Once more welcome and thanks for the introduction.
I like the Pre-Raphaelites too!

In March 2019 I did a month with the theme “Symbolism” which featured some Pre-Raphaelites.

My website is www.roughmagicart.com. Feel free ...

Heather | 8548 comments Hey Chris!

Thank you for speaking out in this folder! I did say I like it when new people introduce themselves and when those already here like to jump in and let us know more about you!

I didn’t know all that about you and what an experience being a security guard in a museum no less!! Did you get to look at all the art when you had down time? Or were you busy watching people the whole time?

I do remember you posted your page of art, and I really liked it, I found several in particular that I enjoyed. I believe you put it in Talent of the Members. But I encourage anyone else who hasn’t seen it, to check it out!

Thank you for introducing yourself in more detail to all of us!

Tea (thistleteastudies) Hello there! My name's Laura. I'm just about to embark upon my final university module on Art History so this group seems perfect for me. :)

I adore fine art and it's history, with my biggest inspirations being from the Renaissance. I look forward to meeting some likeminded folk here and having some wonderful art related conversations!

message 114: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 4562 comments Hi Laura, welcome to our group!
Thanks for the introduction, we have a lot of silent members, so it’s great you jumping right in! Don’t be afraid to comment, in all the years I have been a member I never met a troll here ;-)
Since 2018, I take care of the picture of the day thread, but I have also posted some of my (older) art in the “talent of the members” thread. I graduated from graphic art high school in 1980. Nowadays I’m trying to draw with my Apple Pencil on my iPad, in Procreate.

message 115: by Tea (new)

Tea (thistleteastudies) Thank you Dirk! I'll do my best - I think as the academic year progresses I'll have less time to post but I'll tackle that hurdle when I get to it.

I've seen your picture of the day thread and it looks wonderful! Will those be getting removed here with the secondary group having been made or will they exist in both?

I haven't seen the talent of the members threads yet - I'll go check that out later. :D I have heard of Procreate, but not tried it yet myself. I'll admit I do prefer Photoshop & Paint tool Sai, however I've just recently had a go of Krita and actually for open source software it's very good. I graduated with a BA in Fine art Painting back in 2014, but feel like I'm thriving in the more academic environment of the classics & art history, if that makes sense! Maybe one day I'll do my masters in one of them, I'll see how this final year pans out for me.

message 116: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 4562 comments For the moment the two groups will be kept the same. It's just to have more disc space to upload pictures to the group.
Some months ago I stumbled upon a limit the same as on your personal profile, but there it is just 20 pics. For it group it seems it's about 800 or so.
Not sure if this was always so, Goodreads keeps changing things like this. Normally you got a email every day with the new posts with the images in the mail, but recently the mails have been changed to just text.
For posting pics in the group I prefer to upload them to the group.
You can also post a link from anywhere on the web (using a bit of HTML at the start and end of the link) But the way I do it every pic has the same size.
So in short you don't have to check out the Artlovers part two, it's just a backup.

Never heard of Krita, I'll sure check it out!

And I wish you the best for your final year!

Heather | 8548 comments Hi Laura!
Welcome! I see you’ve met Dirk. He’s a great contributor here, I like his activity and commentary and especially how he keeps up with the Picture of the Day folder!

We have another member whom I’m not sure if she will introduce herself but she’s been with me since I began!!! It will be 13 years ago in January. And she is as active as ever, always has been. A much appreciated member also.

I am the moderator, I don’t come here every day. I try, when I do I usually have quite a bit saved up that I’ve been meaning to post. So I play catch up. Lol

I’m loving reading all your comments that you’ve left! I guess I kind of went backward in the notifications and read your later comments first. You have great wisdom for the arts and will be a wonderful addition to the group! I’m so excited!

Welcome, I hope you find what you are looking for here, I hope you can make some friends, and most of all, Have Fun!

Tea (thistleteastudies) Thank you Heather, gosh that's amazing - 13 years! I do sort of feel like I've been living under a rock by not having a Goodreads account until now. Still, better late than never, I'm loving the community here so far.

I'll admit I owe a lot of my passion and knowledge for art history to a late friend and fellow artist here on the west coast of Scotland. He ran the life drawing group where I live, and back when I was still in high school he introduced me to the old masters before I'd even set foot in university. Even now when looking through my books of Da Vinci's sketchbook drawings, I'm reminded of him enthusiastically showing me all of his work and others! He sadly passed away two years ago, but that passion has stuck with me. ♥

Again, thank you both for the warm welcome and I look forward to being a part of the group! :D

Thank you, Laura for your response and letting us know of how you came about your passion for the arts. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's passing! That is so wonderful that he introduced you to the arts, what a gift; kind of a part of him that will be with you for the rest of your life. That is a neat tribute to him, in a way, that you are carrying on with his passion.

Zoe Disigny (zoedisigny) | 101 comments Hello Everyone! My name is Zoe, and I’m thrilled to be a new member of this group. I’m an art historian and taught college classes for thirty years. In the summers, I often gave art tours for Americans in Europe. My first novel THE ART OF TRAVELING STRANGERS (coming out February 22, 2022) was motivated by the adventures I had during those tours. The story is a journey of self-discovery and personal empowerment inspired by the great art masterpieces in Italy and the city of Paris.
Thanks for letting me introduce myself. I look forward to interacting with this group.

Hello Zoe, thank you for introducing yourself! Welcome to the group
I hope you have a good time browsing through the old threads.

Allow me to promote my daily post in the "Pic of the day" thread. Lately it's been a bit quiet there (we have a lot of silent members) and it's always nice to get a little bit of feedback. This month's theme is abstract paintings.

Your novel sounds interesting, I think I'm going to put it on my to-read list. And see if I can get a hold on it here in Belgium.

Again: welcome and I'm looking forward to hearing more of you!

Heather | 8548 comments Hi Zoe!
Thank you so much for your introduction and a detailed one at that! It’s great to know about your background in art history and leading the tours for people traveling in Italy and Paris!

That would have been me in 1993! I will say I began this group in 2009 with 2 people as just a person who loves art, but I know very little and have no experience in teaching, history, education, leading tours or museums, or anything else of the sort. I will admit that my only experience in art is a summer semester Humanities class I took as an undergraduate at Brigham Young University. We traveled to London, Paris and all over Italy. Your tour guiding expertise would be very useful for my class!

I have to mention as a caveat that I’m not as well versed in art as most members in this group even though I moderate the group.

And, your book sounds fascinating! I, too, will add it to my to-read shelf and check it out when it is published! Congratulations!

I am so excited about your introduction and your experiences, I do hope we will hear more from you in the group! And… I have been a silent member as of late but I plan on changing that very soon and hope to open up more interest for other silent members to feel more comfortable commenting. I have gotten a few good ideas from a some other members already.

On that note, I also have a thread in this same folder where if you have a question or comment for me, feel free to pose it there or if you are not comfortable with that, send me a message and I will most certainly reply. And I am always welcome to new ideas because after all this time I’ll concede, I am about out of thoughts for the group. So there is a thread for suggestions, too.

I’m glad you found this thread and again, it’s great to hear from you!

Welcome and I hope you learn, enjoy, and have fun with us!

Hi Dirk,
Yes! I've been to Belgium a couple of times. My best friend is Dutch-American (and also an art historian), so I've been lucky to do some traveling with her in Belgium and Holland. I've been to Antwerp to see Rubens House; Ghent to see the Ghent Altarpiece (Wow!); and Bruges...well...to see Bruges (and, of course, all the Flemish art there as well--van Eyck, Memling). I love Bruges, but then, I guess everybody does. I've also been to Brussels, but, regrettably, I didn't see the Magritte Museum. I'm quite a fan of his.

Hello Flavio!
Welcome to the group! This is actually the thread where we introduce ourselves, which you said you turned yourself into an author, but...
Let me maybe suggest a couple other folders/threads that may be of more help for you to reach the majority of group members interested in this type of book and work to which you are referring.

Art and Science
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

STEAM Power (Science, Technology, Engineering, ART, Mathematics)
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

And this is the folder which has several threads in it under which your topic would fit nicely. You could even write about your work in several different threads in this same folder!
~ Can fine art be made of or from Technology?
~ Is Art dependent upon good Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), or is it entirely independent and a domain that can exist without contributions from these other fields?
~ What does pure and applied Science owe to creativity?

Please check out these other Folders and Threads and see that they are much more suited to where you are looking to introduce this book.

We would love to hear more about you if you would like to introduce yourself! You may do that here.
Again, I'm very happy to have you in the group! I hope we will hear more from you and you will find more of interest and entertainment with us.

(I would have sent you a private message but your profile is set to private. But I just want to let you know that I will leave your post up for another couple of days so hopefully you will see my response and be able to make the necessary adjustments. Then you can delete your post or I will have to delete it as it is not in line with this thread. Just a warning and to let you know ahead of time)

I have only passed through Antwerp on my way to Bruges but have very happy memories of Belgian chocolate! Fortunately, where I live in Vancouver, we have an excellent Belgian chocolatier.

I'm a beginner-level artist and love watching art documentaries and reading fiction and nonfiction about art and artists. A couple favourites are The Museum of Modern Love and You Are an Artist: Assignments to Spark Creation
