Art Lovers discussion
Introduce Yourself! Welcome to the Group!!!

I joined this group -- I'm not sure if -- early or mid-year last year when I was hoping to immerse myself more in arts. I started painting around those times hoping to channel out my frustrations at work. Recently, though, work load has become heavier so I dropped painting, but I still continue to read articles or watch art lessons at Khan Academy whenever I have a few minutes to spare. I'm also really grateful for all the links that have been posted here. All those info I would have otherwise never found. :D

You're welcome! I'm glad you liked it. "cute" I feel that is a compliment. Thank you!
I'm really glad you joined the group and you've joined in the polls and discussions already. That's awesome! And I commend you for trying painting to channel your frustrations at work. I'm sorry that didn't work out for you. I do hope this group will be of some help. I admit I sure learn a lot from everyone!
I have never heard of the Khan Academy. Maybe it is well-known and I'm just out of the loop, but maybe you could post the link, or a lesson you watched, or something of the sort? I'd like to check it out!
And thank you for posting your introduction. Glad to have you here!

Oh, it is a compliment! :D
I do hope to more free time soon. I would really love to get back to my brushes and canvas.
I forgot how I found out about Khan Academy, but it's addictive for me. Here's one lesson that I think is of interest to us. It's also one of the reasons why I badly want to read The Vanishing Velazquez: https://www.khanacademy.org/humanitie...

Wow! I just watched that video, thank you for posting the link! Hey, do you mind if I post that link in the topic of the book read itself? Or you are welcome to post it under the Schedule and Resources https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I think that would be interesting for anyone to see. And now I see how you can be addicted to the Khan Academy! I am bookmarking it now. There is so much more I want to view!
Again, thank you!

No worries! You can go ahead. :D

And we all know life gets in the way of a lot of things, especially those things we would enjoy more.
Thank you for your post!

This is Wendy Teo. I just joined the group today, ok, in fact I just joined Goodreads yesterday. I am already looking forward to see what kind of impact these circles in Goodreads will bring to my reading palette.
I was still a fulltime corporate architect two months ago until I quitted my job, and I am in transition moving back to my Borneo hometown from London. Interesting how a decision like this could change your daily routine, dietary structure, production focus, sense of self-ownership, sense of possession completely. I could go on with the list, but let's just end it here.
Now I am focusing on running a few things I passionate about, mainly writing, designing and curating. One of it is a non-profit art collective platform for Bornean art and culture. Knowing I will need a lot of social media supporting network in the future, I would love to be in touch if anyone is into curating as well!

You seem like a busy lady and it's cool that you are focusing on things you are passionate about. I'd love to read something that you write! There is actually a thread or two where you can post a sample if you'd like...
Show us Your Written Art~ https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
or Talent of the Members https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
We also have a thread for architecture. I don't think as many people are familiar with that art medium. I'd love to know what you did and what kind of architecture you specialize in. Maybe some pics? Anyway https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
So welcome to the group! Jump right in and share your knowledge and experience!

It would be interesting and fun to follow some of your passions and what you are doing with writing, designing and curating. Feel free to keep us updated on how things are going, what are you doing, any results so far, etc. Post whatever you want about your passions!
Also, there is a folder called The Art from Around the World https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
I was thinking that you could begin a new thread concentrating solely on Bornean art and culture as this might be new to many of us. We don't currently have a thread attributed solely for the art of England, Borneo specifically. It is a topic of which I have an interest and would love to understand and learn about it! I hope that you would have the time and be willing to contribute to this particular, fascinating topic!

Hello again, Kavy!
I was just thinking, and I'm sorry I didn't think of it before when you first introduced yourself. But I just figured out that we don't even have a folder for Graphic Design. Would you like to have your own folder? Or I can create one to which you can keep us updated on your current work and what you are learning? I think that would be fascinating!
In fact, this morning I will create the folder and leave it to you whether you would like to share with us. It is an invitation, and we'd love to hear from you!

My name is Holly, I am a middle-aged mother of one and a resident of the midwestern United States.
Although I dabble in water colors I am more of an art appreciator than an artist.
My artistic interests include but are not limited to architecture and interior design, clothing design, ceramics, woodworking and cabinetry, landscape design, film, painting, and sculpture. The art movements that interest me most are William Morris and Arts & Crafts and the PreRaphaelites.
My other interests are DIY home improvement and historical restoration, reading (non fiction, fantasy & gothic horror), gardening, dogs, horses and equestrian sports, archery, hiking and bicycling.

Welcome Holly!
Thank you for your detailed introduction! It is nice to know about you and your interests. In fact, your variety of art interests actually gave me an idea (and those are hard to come by these days!)
We do have threads for many of your art interests. This group has many threads but there is a 'search' box and you can probably find something related to a topic in which you have an interest...or even better, something you would like to contribute to the topic based on your knowledge and experiences!
We have a thread specifically for Art Movements. And I don't think the PreRaphaelites period has been discussed yet. That would be an interesting one to study...thank you!
I find that I have many of the same interests that you do, except I can't create any art of my own. Like you, I am more of an appreciator.
I think discussing or even just viewing pictures of landscape design would be fun. I really enjoy viewing diverse designs, especially from other countries. I'll see what we can do. Thank you for the idea!
I'm really glad you have joined us and thank you again for the introduction! I hope you enjoy the group!

So glad I decided to see what was going on in this group. I joined back in 2010, and had not visited in years.
Heather, how nice that you are the new moderator, and what an interesting concept you have created here.
If anyone is interest in my relationship to art, what I wrote as a new member here, in 2010, can still be found as my first introduction post. It is still valid, except I did not continue pursuing the practice of oils, and instead have done more with watercolor, due to various reasons that have more to due w/ life then my desire and interest.
Heather, I really enjoy the art crafts you are sharing here, I am hoping to share some of your projects with our granddaughter.

I remember you, Createjoy! I have always been the moderator. I started the group in 2009, so you are a relatively 'older' member. Welcome back!
You're welcome for the DIY posts, that would be wonderful to share with your granddaughter! I'm glad they are enjoyed by some of us, I sure like them as I'm not adept at art at all!
I don't remember where your post is when you first introduced yourself, if you could find it would you mind pasting the link here so we could read it again?
I am interest in your relationship to art! Feel free to share all you know, have done, are currently pursuing, etc!
Again, glad to have you here again!

Hey again, Aaron! Glad you're here! Looking forward to you comments and posts!

Based on the group homepage, it seems you used to have a group read. Is this still the case? What art related book are you reading nowadays?

As for the book read, we have tried numerous times to read a certain book and comment, but it has lost interest quickly every time. Right now, Haaze has a folder dedicated to the book The Vanishing Velázquez: A 19th Century Bookseller’s Obsession with a Lost Masterpiece. We began to comment but I'm not sure if very many people actually read the whole book. If you would like to begin the book (that I did find interesting), maybe your commentary would invite more members to increase their motivation to finish the book!

Again, glad to have you!

It seems that the group focuses more on discussing pieces of art themselves rather than books. This is fantastic, and I hope I will learn a lot from you all :-)

I am Heather (obviously), I currently reside in Utah, USA but I have lived in many other places in the United States. And I did spend a year and a half over in Italy (I feel as my second home). I have many diverse interests besides art, but art is one of my favorite past times and passions. I don't have a degree in art nor much experience as opposed to many members of the group. I took several Humanities classes in college and studied in Europe for a semester. That really got me interested. I admit, my memory from so long ago isn't as keen as it used to be and that is one reason why I love this group. There are so many intelligent, talented, and experienced members here! And I'm just glad to be a part of something in which I learn and enjoy! (without having to pay tuition haha)
Of course, this site being an online book club, obviously we all like to read. Since I am not currently enrolled in school, I read and try to learn more about my interests. Some other interests include neuroscience (what a different topic than art!), interior design, psychology, and different religious topics of various religions or ways of thinking, just to understand others points of view.
I don't read a whole lot of fiction and I admit, some of my non-fiction books aren't exactly page-turners so they take me a bit longer to read. Also, I pick up more than one book at a time, usually 4-5. To finish any one of those books completely takes awhile. I just want to read so many books, I will be involved in one or two books and find yet another that interests me and begin that one, too!
If you haven't observed already, I tend to ramble and talk a lot. So that is a bit about me. Let's hear about you!

Heather, it's wonderful to hear about you! Your words come across so cheerful and pleasant to both eyes and ears :-)
I am very much like you, Heather. I have tried to restrict the number of books I read simultaneously, but I often end up picking up more than a couple of books at the same time. I love having many genres to choose from at any given moment in time. I have many owned TBR books physically and on my Kindle. Like you, I also enjoy psychology and neuroscience, though I have still a lot to read and learn :D

Luis, it sounds like you have quite a luxurious life :-) Also you have a very kind and loving heart; I loved reading about your cherished relations to your family!

Many of us have this issue it seems.

I'm starting a free online course today via the University of Glasgow about Art Crimes and the Theft of Antiquities. Has anyone by chance taken it before or is starting it today as well?
I look forward to learning more about you all as I go through the post threads. I'm trying to get out 'stalker mode' and actually comment on posts, so I hope to chat with many of you soon. Take care!

Hi Aaron, thanks! I see there's a place to post about writing. I'll add some information there about my books. The Netherlands is truly a wonderful place to study art history. I moved here from Seattle, Washington to study at the University of Amsterdam thirteen years ago and haven't left!

Hi Jennifer! Wow, I've been absent a whole day and a half and we have some new awesome members! I'm so glad you introduced yourself! And your topics of interest are very interesting to many of us.
I am especially intrigued by mysteries and art theft, etc. basically what you describe. And your writing! I would love to check that out!
Yes, there is the thread, Talent of the Members https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... and there is also, probably more specific, the thread Show Us Your Written Art! https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... Feel free to post where ever you feel suits you.
And I was thinking...since you mentioned that you just began a class regarding art crimes, would you feel comfortable, or willing to share some of what you learn with us? You can even create your own thread! There is already a folder called Thefts and Forgeries https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... create your own topic or whatever you want to call it.
Oh! I am really a late-comer. Looking for the links, I see you already posted about your writing in the one folder. Excellent! I'll read that post next.
I am so happy to have you in the group! And look forward to any comments you contribute!

Thank you for this warm introduction, Heather! I will gladly post a few updates about what I'm learning in the Thefts and Forgeries folder. I've only completed the first four 'assignments' so far, but am loving it. It's really a great primer on art forgeries, smuggling and theft. Glad to have found this group!

I'm glad to be part..."
So happy to have you, Leo. And thank you for jumping right into the discussions! And thank you for your introduction, it's nice to know a bit about the members.
We have a few threads where you can share some of your poems if you would like to, or you can share your success! That would be awesome!
Again, welcome to the group!

I'm glad to be part..."
Welcome Leo

I've been an Air Force intelligence officer, information technology manager, computer-game artist, set designer and Jeopardy! contestant, and am now an emergency management specialist. I've had training in architectural rendering, terrorist incident response and maritime archaeology, but not all at the same time. I’m a frequent contributor to Macmillan’s Criminal Element website. My Facebook author page features spies, shipwrecks, archaeology and art crime.
I write a series of novels revolving around crimes against art. The first book, The Collection , is available pretty much everywhere; the second, Stealing Ghosts, is slated to release in the fall.

I want to add that it is great that you have authored a couple of books already!
I don't know if you hove perused this whole group. You've only been here a short while and there is a lot to see.
I attempt to keep members of the group from 'promoting' their own books to the group in different threads not necessarily related to their particular book. It seems to come across as a self-promotion and that's not really the objective of this group. Of course, it is completely fine that you introduced your books in your personal introduction! I have no problem with that.
I only say this because recently I had to remove a member for unfortunately numerous reasons but one was she was 'promoting' her book all over the group discussions. This is not okay with the intent of the group overall.
So I have created actually three different folders where members can brag or announce their own work, what is happening with their accomplishments, and even a thread when your new book is published you can let us know! That I would definitely say is news of a great accomplishment!
Check out the following folders dedicated to self-promotion and helping us know about you and your work.
I'm sorry if you've already seen these and my post is redundant. I don't mean to be depreciatory of your accomplishments at all! I hope you do not take offense to this post. It is basically informational for you as a new member. I'm only trying to help and hopefully keep the group as organized as possible.

I do look forward to your posts regarding your own work and to your additional thoughts on other threads in which we've had activity or even commenting in an older folder that hasn't seen much activity in awhile. I always love when members have something to say and can open new discussion in an existing folder that hasn't been really active as of late.
Again I want to welcome you to the group and jumping right in to being an active member!

I did notice that you introduce your page Criminal Element. As to my post above, I want to express that your mentioning of your reviews and writings in that publication are alright as they do related to the topic of that folder.

Actually, the website belongs to Macmillan; I just play there occasionally.

Thank you for clarifying that. At any rate, I think your reviews or articles that you contribute to his site are interesting and do add to the particular discussion in which you post them. It's alright that you include your reviews, such as your post in the folder "Thefts and Forgeries" as your comment did relate to the topic being discussed. I can tell you have a lot of experience and have done much research into that topic and I thank you for sharing! I commend you on your writing skills, too.

I’m writing a series of novels involving crimes against art. The Collection came out last year; Stealing Ghosts is due this fall. I’m outlining the third installment now, with a story that parallels the Ban Chiang looting scandal that came to a head in 2008. In this version, the looted pottery and bronzes are coming from Shan state in Myanmar, forcing Our Heroes to deal with drug warlords and clashing ethnic militias.
The challenge: I need help to create a fictional Shan-predecessor culture, sort of a northwestern analog to and contemporary of the Ban Chiang culture. I don’t need much detail (I’m not trying to recreate an entire civilization), just the ethnic group this culture belonged to, when they might have settled in the area, and what cultural style their artworks might have resembled. I’d like to root the story in some amount of authenticity if possible.
If anyone in this group is well-versed in Bronze/Iron-Age Southeast Asian artwork or culture and is willing to help, please reply to this message and I'll get in touch. Thanks in advance.

What a great mix of skill sets! I'm sure you have many experiences to draw on when writing. I'll check out your book. Take care!

I have noticed in other groups that they do have a place for new members (and those already in the group since I haven't had this thread before) to introduce themselves so we can get to know you better. You can say anything about yourself, your interests, why you joined the group...basically anything your heart desires. This thread is free for all to comment!
Thank you Deborah for again bringing that to my attention. I haven't really had this thread before but I think it could be a good idea especially since we've had so many new members lately.
Welcome every one of you, let's hear from you!
