Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Call me paranoid...but...they offer "everyone in the country" one year's FREE cover with their special whatever-it-is to protect the data that was stolen before the offer...One Year. Then of course you'll have to pay. I smell scam. I smell scare the people so they'll buy.

message 202: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee And what's one year going to do? Hackers hold on to your information to use 5 years down the road.

And, their site keeps crashing because of all the traffic from people trying to freeze their account.

Annnddddd, you have to do this on all three credit sites.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments And how did this company get alll that personal data in the first place? Many people say they never opted into the service, so...is it a case of the hackers hacked?

message 204: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Boom! There you go!!!!

But, sad to say, you can't take out any kind of loan unless those 3 have your financial information.

message 205: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments I am trying to get away from loans, and credit cards. I will be credit card free by jun next year and Loan free once I pay off my mortgage in 6 years. Well that's the plan anyway. If I need a loan I go to my bank on base as they have everything they need with out having to go anywhere else for it. The know my work history for the last 39 years Dam how sad is that they probably know more about me then I do...

message 206: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Are you saying you will be free of the 3 credit bureaus? I wish!

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments I am annoyed. Tried to listen to a BBC Radio 4 production of Diary of Samuel Pepys - Complete and gave up after about an hour. Whoever wrote the script had only skimmed the first volume. Not content with changing the stories she used out of all recognition, she invented a bunch of stuff that isn't even there. Including a Frenchman's panegyric of the "wonderful" English king, Charles II. Sickeningly sycophantic, that was, particularly coming from a Welsh script writer. Aside from that, there is so much good stuff in the diary, why did she feel the need to add things that weren't, and change things that were? Not to mention superimposing third-milennial sensibilities on 17th century people, such as making the maid a vegetarian who won't kill a turkey because it's her friend! (Item: the Pepyses never had a house where they could keep turkeys). Pepys' wife was French born and bred, so why did they give her a nearly East-End-London accent?

Ugh. Ugh.
And again I say: ugh.

Groovy Lee They never stick to the book--NEVER!!!

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Lovely weather this morning, the air was almost cold on my skin when I got up. First night without AC since sometime in late May. As a direct consequence I am stuck with "Who Will Buy This Wonderful Morning" from Oliver!

My brain doesn't realise how thoroughly I dislike most musicals.

Groovy Lee Orinoco, I made the quick streusel cake I printed here for you, and to be honest, it was more cakey than anything; I didn't really like it. I must have done something to mess it up.

Anyway, it bothered me so much that I gave you that recipe, so I'm going to try and redeem myself. I forgot I had this recipe, and this one's a lot better Whether you decide to make it or not, "Whew", my conscious is clear:) (you're going to have to half it):

CINNAMON SWIRL COFFEE CAKE

1 cup Sour Cream
3/4 Cup Butter (softened)
1 1/2 C Sugar
2 1/2 Cups flour
1/2 Cup Walnuts
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 Eggs
1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
1/4 Cup Sugar

Cream sugar & eggs until fluffy; Add sour cream and butter and beat well. Add flour, baking powder, vanilla extract, & nuts--mix well.

Mix the 1/4 Cup sugar & 1 T Cinnamon. Pour half batter into greased bundt pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mix, cover with remaining batter--Bake high few minutes then lower hear for 40 minutes.

**I'm sure you know how to make a glaze since they're soooo easy. Put whatever kind of glaze you desire**

mrbooks | 2016 comments Groovy my love if you could make this and email me a piece I would love you forever, I would love you forever even if you couldn't my friend but it would be extra special with a lovely piece of cinnamon swirl coffee cake.

message 213: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee LOL!!! mrbooks, believe me, if I could I would:)

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments I made that first coffee cake. It didn't say to, but I oiled and floured my cake pan anyway. And all the struesel sunk to the bottom of the pan and stuck fast!
Next time I will line the bottom with baking paper!
It tasted good, anyway.

This recipe looks more like what I was thinking of from my childhood. I don't have a Bundt pan but maybe it won't know the difference if I pour it in a 9x13.

message 216: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I'm glad you still liked the first one even though the streusel sunk. And I really hoped I redeemed myself and you LOVE the second recipe:)

Laura (lauraa_louu) | 2 comments Hi, i'm not sure if this is the right discussion for this but I am new here (and to goodreads!) and this group felt like something I wanted to join! So hi everybody! My name is Laura, i'm fairly new to considering myself a reader but I have recently re-discovered my love of books! If anybody has any hints and tips with using GR I would really appreciate it! I look forward to getting to know the people here and discussing all things books!!

message 218: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Hi Laura, and welcome to goodreads. We talk about everything and anything from likes to dislikes. There are many different threads you can look into I am also on the Stephen King fan thread.

Hi! Thanks, nice to meet you!

message 220: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments So Laura what is your favorite book?

message 221: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Welcome, Laura!! :)

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Looks like Cataluña's "independence" is going down the pan even quicker than expected. It's been nonsense and talk from the git-go but now all the big banks and the gas co. etc are saying they're going to withdraw from there and put their main offices etc in other cities, on the Spanish side. "Ooops, well...we may need to negotiate!" Such a tiny population could never compete on a European level, let alone any other, anyway. So much for the unilateral, rushed and gerrymandered "referendum" with the pre-stuffed ballot boxes.

message 223: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Looks as if everybody is politically unhappy--PREACH!!!

message 224: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Oh politics please I try to avoid it as much as possible, what is the difference between a politician and a crook? A crook is in jail for getting caught, a politician is in office for getting away with it.

message 225: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee LOL! Good one!

message 226: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Watching American Pie the wedding, love a good laugh. Have actually seen weddings very much like this movie. Am attending a wedding on the 19th of the month and I know it won't be like this but one never knows. My son is getting married I told him he has 35 years to go before we catch up but he never will LOL.

message 227: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Congratulations for your son, mrbooks. Hopefully, he'll imitate his father in being a good husband:)

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Like father like son!!

Is anyone else annoyed when someone posts on a forum or YT, "Help me name my cat/dog/hamster or whatever"?
You chose to have a pet, person. Observe the animal and give them a name that fits. If you can't even pick an animal's name for yourself, you shouldn't have one. Or kids, for that matter.

message 229: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Hear, hear! Name your own pets!!!! :)

message 230: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Easy all dog's are Frodo and all cats are crookshanks LOL. Please don't say that to my son although he looks almost the spitting image of me he thinks he's better looking smarter and much more versatile then I am. That's kids for you...

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Just thinking how times have changed. Woke up with an old soul song in my head that was "cute" back in the day, and would be sooo inappropriate now. It was called "You Can't Change That" and in part it said, "You can change your telephone number, you can change your adress too, but you can't stop me from lovin' you, no you can't change that, no-no."
Today he'd be charged with stalking!

Not to mention the old Monkees song, "Mary Mary"
"Mary, Mary, where you goin' to?
What more, Mary, can I do
To prove that my love is truly yours?
I've done more now than a clear-thinkin' man would do
Mary, Mary, it's not over
Where you go, I will follow
Till I win your love again
And walk beside you, but until then
Mary, Mary, where you goin' to?"

If she's got any sense, Mary is running to the nearest police station!

message 232: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Or Mary could say she is going to contrary some where he would not want to go. Or she could be running, running down the highway to the Hotel California It's such a lovely place. but remember you can checkout but you can never leave. Or was it the Overlook Hotel

message 233: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I don't have time to look up who sung this back in the 70's, but sing that song today, and guess what'll happen. It goes:

I've been watching you
I see everything you do
Saw you last night from behind that big 'ole tree
What you were doing to him, girl,
I show do wish it were me

message 234: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments He is going on the Jerry Springer show, LOL.

message 235: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I've discovered THE most delicious trail mix; and it's so easy to make. In this recipe, you add each ingredient to your liking, mix and match ingredients, and add what spices you do and don't want to use:

TRAIL MIX

Mixed nuts
Dried cranberries or Craisins
Sunflower seeds

Optional ingredients, add what you want:

Dried apricots
Popcorn
Cheerios
Dried Oats
Chocolate Chips

Spices:

Salt
Ginger
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Ground Cloves
All Spice

Remember, you don't have to use all of these spices. A few will do just fine. Mix and match.

Mix all ingredients together. Pour, to your taste, Light Corn Syrup or Maple Syrup (Maple Syrup is too sweet for me) into mixture and stir through. Spray baking pan with Pam. Pour mixture onto pan and spread out into a layer. Bake in oven at 350 for 5-10 minutes, or until the glaze hardens. Let cool and keep in a bowl to snack on through the day or week.

I hope you enjoy it. I do:)

message 236: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments The last time I had trail mix I got lost for a whole week. I used it as a guide but it disappeared

message 237: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee That was probably me. I got hungry:)

message 238: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments You my friend Groovy are always forgiven LOL.

message 239: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Orinoco, I've been going through that, too. It's common. Bodies going through changes, stress, anything can trigger your body waking you up. Hope you're not under a lot of stress.

I can fall asleep anytime of the day. But can't get through the night without waking up and falling back to sleep, or waking up an hour before I'm supposed to. It's age, I tell you:) I'm this close to buying Nyquil ZZZZZ--LOL!

message 240: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments The real pisser is Nyquil doesn't work.

message 241: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee NOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments None of those dodges work, after awhile. I was addicted to OTC sleeping meds (Unisom, Atarax etc) for years. It gets to the place that they don't "help you sleep"--but if you don't take them, you can't! I finally went cold turkey and in four days' time slept about six hours total--prisoner's cough, sweats, itchy skin, and near-psychotic episodes. I am also told I looked like SOS, in the military sense (stuff on a shingle).

Thank God for novels.

message 243: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Wow anthrax you are one tough lady to be able to take that it a real killer.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments I'm pleased that GR has apparently stopped sending out those idiotic, "Congratulations! You've finished (Title of Book)!" notices. Like you don't know what book you've just reviewed!

message 245: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments LOL I got one of those messages the other day, for the first time. I don't post reviews as I have a bad habit of ruining the book for others who might read my review. My son has given up asking about books I have read if he wants to read then as I give to much away. And he wont ask about books we are reading together that's even worse. I once asked how he felt about a certain situation and was told he wasn't that far yet and thanks for ruining another book LOL. He did finish the book but never asked me about it again.

message 246: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Orinoco, they finally heard you loud and clear--LOL!

mrbooks, shame, shame--LOL!
