mrbooks | 2016 comments Oh Ori please don't joke about that because I know what's next, the bathrooms the hoovering the dusting the washing the windows then the dinner then the dishes. Yes I have been on that challenge and have never managed to complete it, it just keeps building up to a bigger and bigger challenge.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments I've been a housewife for 35 years. Don't talk to me about neverending housework! (And me with this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side...)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Pains in your diodes down the left side isn't a good thing, might want to go to your local computer diagnostic specialist and have him check your CPU

Groovy Lee The first week of Wimbledon is flying by, but I'm having fun watching it! (in case y'all were wondering what I'm up to:)

message 105: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Why in heaven's name do I care whether O.J. Simpson is paroled? Yet another day ruined. I had to miss Young & Restless for that?

message 106: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments I'm betting OJ is upset to he missed the Young & Restless to go to court.

message 107: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee LOL!!!!! Youuuuuuu!!!!!

message 108: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Must be nice get sentenced to 33 years let out after 9 and you get a monthly pension of 25,000 who says crime doesn't pay.

message 109: by Groovy (last edited Jul 22, 2017 06:34PM) (new)

Groovy Lee I think it's been dwindled down to $1000 because he owes the Goldmans millions and they take it out of his pension.

message 110: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments His pension is one thing they can't touch that's why it is still there to begin with. This is a debate we had at work when we were pissed off because that's all we heard in the news that he got parole.

message 111: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee O.K., I don't know why one news show stated that the Goldman's is taking most of it, and now he'll be living on about $1,700 a month. That's why he'll be living with his daughter in Florida until he gets on his feet. I must have misread the numbers. Wow.

message 112: by Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) (last edited Jul 23, 2017 12:56AM) (new)

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments They probably put the comma in the wrong place and meant 17,000.
That said, a lot of people, ourselves included, live on 1,700 or less. It might be a good experience for him.

message 113: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Are you kidding, you expect OJ to live on 1,700 a month he probably spends more then that a week in food.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Good news!! My pastor has had his PET scan and has been declared cancer-free! The oncologist used the word "cured." 18 mos ago he was told if he'd waited 2 more weeks to see the doctor, he would have died.

His wife, whether she realises it or not, is in depression. Part of that is the last 18 mos but it actually started before that. (I live with GAD and periodic depression, I recognise the signs.) Maybe that's why, since it's a tiny group (about 12 people) and most of them are his immediate family, they are closing the church for the month of August so the pastor's family can go on a group vacation. Goodness knows they need it. I hope it helps.

message 115: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I love it when I hear that someone has beat cancer. That is the best news. I lost loved ones to that (one was my 12 year old niece a few years back) So when I hear "cured", that's great, and you can't help but be happy for that person. So, congratulations, to him and his family.

I've lived with depression all my life, too. It's a hard room mate to have to share your life with. I hope the vacation upbuild's and enlivens them all.

message 116: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I meant to add how much fun I'm having watching the space station go by at night. I get excited when I get the email stating the time and direction, and even more excited when it sails across the dark sky. Yeah, it doesn't take much to make me happy:)

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Simple minds, simple pleasures--I'm like that, myself. Give me some icecream, or a good book, and I'm happy for hours.

Yup, depression is well-called "the black dog." And that dog, she is a female!

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments And BTW, Groovy, thanks for responding. I am in another group with a chat board and when I make a comment it goes ignored, though the other users trip over themselves to respond to each other. But then, I'm always on the edge of a gathering, too. Except here. :-*

message 119: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Ori maybe the ignore you because they are afraid of making themselves look foolish. Trust me I know how that feels LOL. Depression is a very hard hole to dig your way out of. I still suffer with bouts of it since I lost my daughter. People at work know to avoid me when I get quiet. Yes I can have a very sharp tongue and when I'm really down I don't care who I cut and leave bleeding on the emotional floor.

message 120: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee When someone says something to you, and that's all of us on this forum, it's rather rude not to respond. I know the feeling though. And when I get that feeling I'm not welcomed while they include each other, I leave--see ya! If you can't treat me with some courtesy, then you're not the forum for me. I can't tell you how many of them I've left in my dust. One of my favorite sayings is from an old song, 'Got along without cha before I met cha, gonna get along without you now.' :)

I live with depression, too, mrbooks, because of tragedies in my life. And I know you miss your daughter a lot and need your quiet moments. You've always been a kind friend to me and Ori and never left us bleeding on the emotional floor. So, thank-you, and you hang in there.

It's so easy to chat and play around with the two of you. That's why I'm still on this forum:) I remember how it started, too. I came across this forum, saw the 'got a joke' thread and started posting jokes. You, Ori, and Doggie were the only three that responded, and it's been like that ever since. Going on 3 years, I think. I never would have met the two of you if it weren't for Goodreads. And for that, I am very thankful.

I'm supposed to have saved this speech for the end of the year---LOL!!!!

message 121: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Groovy, you are making me blush no I would never leave a friend bleeding on the emotional floor, especially a kindred soul. Yes you and Ori are what I consider kindred souls and friends you make coming on goodreads much more pleasurable. If I hadn't stumbled across these threads I would have left here a long time ago. The both of you make it worth coming back everyday. I may not post daily but I do read what is happening. I'm sure you can come up with another speech at the end of the year. Yes we all have our ghosts that haunt us.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Aw shucks, twern't nothin...;)

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments I gotta share this recipe even though I haven't tried it yet. I've been learning to make scones, and this is all the rage in Australia. Just 3 ingredients, though you could add dried fruit like craisins or dates if you like. Don't use fresh fruit unless you know they're going to be eaten in one sitting, like for a potluck or a party.

3 ingredient Scones
1 can of Sprite or similar lemon-lime soda
The same amount (don't know what it is in American, here it's 330 ml) thick cream (whipping cream)
4 cups self-raising flour

Chill your soda and cream well; you can even chill the flour in the freezer if you have room. The cold ingredients in a hot oven make them rise better.
Preheat your oven to 400ºF, if you have a fan oven use that setting.

Sift your flour into a large bowl, pour in the cream and soda, and mix **with a spoon or table knife, not your hands!** You don't want to touch the mixture much because you'll warm it up. When the dough comes together, turn it out onto a floured surface and just barely give it a couple of turns on the surface, don't "knead" it.
Flatten it out to about 2 inches thick and cut with a floured glass or scone cutter. Place the scones on a greased baking sheet so they are just touching and bake for 15 min.

Serve with butter, jam, whipped cream, cream cheese and/or fresh fruit.
You can see several recipes on Youtube, they call them "lemonade scones" because to them, what we call Sprite or 7Up is "fizzy lemonade." And yes, you can measure out of a big bottle if you usually have it in the house.

Groovy Lee I have a collection of scone recipes. I'm definitely going to try this. I think 1 can of soda is about 16oz, and that measures out to 2 cups. So, that would be 2 cups of whipping cream. Thanks for this, Orinoco.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments 330 ml is 11 oz, according to Google, so that's what? a cup and a half in measuring cups.

Oooh, email your best fail-safe scone recipe out of your collection please miss!

mrbooks | 2016 comments My wife found a excellent scone recipe it's called Terry's chocolate orange scone. Wow it is great I don't know how much of what needs to go in it I will try to find out for you.

message 128: by Groovy (last edited Jul 30, 2017 07:33PM) (new)

Groovy Lee Mine ain't all fancy like y'all's, but I have lemon scones and Mixed berry scones (maybe you already have) and these are in cups and ounces:

MIXED BERRY SCONES:

1 3/4 (8 3/4 oz) frozen mixed berries
3 Tablespoons confectioner's sugar
3 cups (15 oz) all-purpose flour
12 Tablespoons chilled unsalted butter cut into 1/2 inch pieces
1/3 cup (2 1/3 oz) granulated sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup plus 2 Tablespoons whole milk
1 LG egg plus 1 large yolk

Toss berries with confectioners' sugar in bowl; freeze until needed.

Combine flour, 6 Tablespoons butter, granulated sugar, baking power, and salt in food processor and process until butter is fully incorporated, about 15 seconds. Add remaining 6 Tablespoons butter and pulse until butter is reduced to pea-size pieces, 10-12 pulses. Transfer mixture to large bowl; stir in berries.

3. Beat milk and egg and yolk together in separate bowl. Make well in center of flour mixture and pour in milk mixture. Using rubber spatula, gently stir mixture, scraping from edges of bowl and folding inward until very shaggy dough forms and some bits of flour remain. Do not overmix.

4. Turn dough onto well-floured counter and if necessary, knead briefly until dough just comes together, about 3 turns. Using your floured hands and bench scraper, shape dough (into any shape you want) or into 12 by 4 inch rectangle, about 1 1/2 inches tall. Using knife or bench scraper, cut dough crosswise into 4 equal rectangles. Cut each rectangle diagonally into 2 triangles. Transfer scones to prepared sheet. Bake until scones are light golden on top, 16-18 minutes.

GLAZE (optional):

While scones are still baking, combine melted butter and honey in small bowl. Remove scones from oven and brush tops evenly with glaze mixture. Return scones to oven and continue to bake until golden brown on top, 5-8 minutes longer. Cool.

I hope you like them, Orinoco.

mrbooks, if it's not too much trouble, I'd like that recipe. I loovvvee scones:)

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments I'll have to wait until it cools down to make scones with fruit in them, in our heat they just spoil unless they get eaten right away.

Mr Books, I'monna ask a delicate question: how do you feel about Marmite? It's a food that divides families. I got a jar last week and finally opened it. What a treat, just a tiny bit on buttered toast. But then I like miso and soysauce.

message 130: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Wow, it's really that hot there? Okay, I'll send you another one, just give me a few days:)

message 131: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Yuk marmite, it is something you have to be brought up on, my wife and all her sisters love it me and the kids hate it.

Groovy Lee Scone recipe #2, Orinoco:

BROWN SUGAR-PECAN SCONES

2 Cups all-purpose flour
1/3 Brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 Cup chilled butter cut in 1/2 inch cubes
1 Cup whipping Cream--divided
1/2 Cup chopped toasted pecans

Stir first 4 ingredients together in large bowl. Cut butter into flour mixture until crumbly and mixture resembles small peas. Freeze 5 minutes; add 3/4 plus 2 Tablespoons cream and pecans. Stir just until dry ingredients are moistened.

Turn dough onto floured surface. Press or pat dough into a 7 inch Round (mixture will be crumbly) Cut the Round into 8 wedges. Place them 2 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Brush top of wedges with remaining cream until moistened. Bake 13-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments MMmmmmm! Scones!

I wasn't brought up on Marmite but as I say, I love miso and soysauce and stuff like that (love love love umeboshi!) I've always preferred salty and sour to sweet. As a kid I used to buy dried umeboshi in the Asian shop and suck on them...only this year did I learn they're meant to be rehydrated!

Groovy, a little tip I learned: Freeze your butter and then grate it into the flour. Give it a stir and you're ready to add your liquid. Saves time and effort and you don't warm up the mixture by handling it with your fingers.

message 135: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Thanks for the that, Orinoco. Hope you like the recipe. I'm still waiting for mrbooks' scone recipe. I'm going to make yours first.

message 136: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Groovy I will find it for you fear not. I know it has flour, caster sugar, butter as well as the zest of 1 orange and half a terry's chocolate orange but the quantities I don't know.

message 137: by Groovy (last edited Aug 01, 2017 07:44PM) (new)

Groovy Lee Don't go to any trouble for me, mrbooks. If you don't find it, let me know, and I'll just Google it:)

Here's my last scone recipe that happens to be chocolate and very fattening:

CHOCOLATE SCONES

2/3 Cups (160 ml) cream or milk
1 Large egg lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 3/4 Cups (235 grams) all-purpose flour
1/4 Cup Dutch processed unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1/2 Cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoons salt
1/3 Cup chilled butter cut in pieces
1/2 Cup Dark chocolate chips

In a small bowl, whisk cream or milk, egg, and vanilla extract. In large bowl, whisk flour , cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Blend or cut butter into flour mixture until resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in chocolate chips, add cream mixture, and stir just until dough comes together.

Transfer dough to floured surface, knead a few times; shape into a 7 inch Round; cut Round into 8 wedges. Place on prepared baking sheet; brush top of scones with a little cream or milk. Bake 18-20 minutes, or until firm--Serve with whipped cream

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Oh, now THAT himself will love!!
I see on YT that the NZ contingent don't bother with cutting pretty rounds or wedges. They just slap the dough between 2 sheets of waxed paper, roll it into a rectangle and whack it into squares. In the words of Annabell White, "Life's too short, darl. If your friend complains, hey you gave her a bigger scone, just say Take another, dear!"

message 139: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee LOL! And who cares if it's in a wedge or not? I'm all for slapping and whacking. I do that, too, I just didn't want to seem unmannerly--LOL!

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments I made those cream-flour-sodapop scones this afternoon. Man they are good, especially fresh out of the oven! My technique is lacking, even for the "slap and whack" scones. I made em too vulgar big, and I should have used two baking sheets instead of crowding em all on one. They basically made a big ol heap. I added a cup of dessicated coconut. Yumbles!

message 141: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments The art of baking dictates everything to be a certain size, the joy of baking dictates you do it how you like as you are the one to eat it. Enjoy your self in your baking and do things how you like and really enjoy the results of your baking as only you can, with gusto.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Stinky old DH didn't like the latest scones. Sod it. I'm done with baking till the weather cools down.

I am increasingly wary of cosy mysteries. These days it seems to mean "find a catchy phrase to use as a title and then spin a weak tale around the phrase."

message 143: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Then he should find his own recipe and bake them, then share them with you. And that just leaves more for you:)

message 144: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Ori bake for the pleasure of it as long as you like what you bake that's all that matters. Like our beautiful friend Groovy said if your DH doesn't like them that leaves more for you. Never judge your cooking or in this case baking on the opinion of one person, find other victims, oops I mean people to try them and get there opinion as well.

message 145: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments My beautiful friends I am off Sat morning at 3 am to Cornwall so I won't be here for at least a week I will miss our chats but needs must. The Boss says it is time to go away and I must follow I will see you all when I get back.

message 146: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Have a safe trip, mrbooks. Let us know when you get back. It'll be kind of empty with you gone, but we will carry on until you return:)

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) | 2568 comments Have a nice holiday. Wish we could go too, though The Mrs might have something to say about that!! LOL

message 148: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Orinoco, will you be able to view the total eclipse where you live? Next week, here in Nashville, we're having one, and everybody's excited. That's why my daughter and I are staying home the entire day to avoid the chaos it'll probably cause. We're just going to sit out back and enjoy the darkness for two minutes.

message 149: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 2016 comments Thanks all I'm back yes I would take you but it would upset the wife I can't even take a computer and was lucky I was allowed a book. I swear my cat is seeing things. or she is going loopy not sure which is which.
