Teresa (teresainohio) Etiquette & Espionage

I love the steampunk look and was excited to read a book during this time period. Any recommendations for more books like this?

I agree with the above statement. I am a comfort reader going back to the same authors and series . This is a great way for me to expand my horizons.

Christie (cereale) Finished my 2nd book. On the Island (On the Island, #1) by Tracey Garvis-Graves for new author. This counts as my one non-YA book. Updated post #6.

message 54: by Candice (new)

Candice (locomonobano) | 78 comments I think the "all new books" original idea is a good one to stick with. I wouldn't want to change it, and it's a good way for me to find a bunch of new series I will (hopefully) like and can read after the challenge is done.

I've only read a few steampunk books that I liked -- The Brass Giant by Brooke Johnson is one of them (as was Etiquette & Espionage). It has more clockwork and mechanical descriptions that are done really well, but less emphasis on dress and proper etiquette. Definitely worth checking out.

Wow that was good. I'm upset with myself for not realizing that there was a trilogy before this, but at least I'll have something to look forward to when this challenge is over.

I have owned this book for at least a year and a half probably longer, and I just finally read it...
That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I really liked the main character Dru and found it to be a page-turner. I finished it in one setting, and just ordered the second book in the series.
I do recommend that you give it a whirl.

I'd recommend Steel Lily (Periodic, #1) by Megan Curd for YA steampunk. I read it a couple years ago & it's not Victorian but it is steampunk. And I remember really liking it a lot! :D

Whoa it's scary? It's on my TBR but the last time I read a scary book ( Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake ) I had to sleep with the lights on for a week. And a baseball bat.

Yes, I found the villain to be quite creepy. I think it depends on how affected you are by that sort of thing, though? I don't generally get frightened by book reading, but I was deliciously chilled by this one. Mileage may vary.

I'm happy to have offered a SNZ earworm! Yay!

(Fun fact - the section of my office that I work in refers to itself as "The Earworm" because we are all constantly getting songs stuck in each others head and/or there is always some snippet of a song being sung out loud to one another. I greatly enjoy my co-workers!)

message 92: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments How awesome, it sounds like you have a great work environment. I told my husband about having the SNZ earworm and we both were singing it and acting like fools :)

FINISHED: 1/6

Just One Damned Thing After Another (The Chronicles of St Mary's, #1) by Jodi Taylor (adult, new author/series)

message 94: by Beverly (new)

Beverly | 17 comments Candice - The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray was scary, but mostly the last 1/4 of the book. I suggest reading the last few chapters during the day. It could have just been the mood I was in when I read it. Lair of Dreams (The Diviners, #2) by Libba Bray was not scary at all - but was very suspenseful.

That sounds like so much fun. I work as a line cook, & everyone (including my managers) are all inappropriate & familial with each other. It's like having a bunch of rowdy siblings (singing, silly one liners, dad jokes, sexually inappropriate comments, etc.) -- amazing! :D

Slated (Slated, #1) by Teri Terry started off exciting. I raced through the first 50 pages, and then it started to drag a bit. The story development was solid, it just seemed a bit repetitive. However, the ending picked up and left me wanting to read book 2. Overall, a good dystopian read.
