L J | 714 comments Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels, #5.5) by Ilona Andrews Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews narrated by Renée Raudman. This is one of my favorite Ilona Andrews books. Listened to adapt to Renée Raudman narration. I like her as a narrator but her voice does not match how I think of Kate. This book is from Andrea's point of view. I'm hoping next time I listen to Kate Daniels book I will be able to stick with it instead of switching to print.

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments L J wrote: "Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews narrated by Renée Raudman... but her voice does not match how I think of Kate..."

That is one reason I rarely listen to books. I "hear" the characters a certain way when I read. When I listen and they don't match, it's a bit distracting. (The same with seeing movies made from books I've read. I find them distracting when they're not cast the way I "saw" them when reading. Sometimes the actors match, sometimes they're better than I thought, but sometimes... Sheesh! I have to separate the video from the book and see it as a something completely different in order to enjoy it.)

However, audio books don't work well for me overall. The main reason isn't so much the narration -- and I've heard both good and bad. It's that I find it hard to concentrate on the story if I'm doing other things and wind up rewinding to things/passages I've missed -- especially with mysteries. I've tried listening while driving, but find "books" sometimes distract me when I need to pay to attention to traffic or road conditions so I miss things and have to rewind. Maybe that gets better with "practice" (use), but...

That leaves bedtime, which gets interrupted by sleep. Then, I have to find where I "left" off the next time I listen. (And, repeat!)

I can't say I'll never pick up audio. I heard the Flavia de Luce audio books are nicely done. I have a few, but I haven't tried them as of yet. We'll see.

Icewineanne | 54 comments You’re not alone Karen....also have trouble following audiobooks. I just don’t have the same level of concentration as with print books.

And in bed i always fall asleep within minutes so it works perfectly as a sleep aid but it sure doesn’t get me into the story. Hear the same first few pages every night (and they’re always new to me) 😂

Mark Baker (carstairs38) | 1278 comments I listen to audio books while driving in the car. They work for me to make trips better. Usually, I either listen to a series or read a series because I've had the same thing happen where the reader didn't make the character sound right. (Because we all know I am right in how I hear the character.) ;)

message 961: by L J (new)

L J | 714 comments I do audio while doing various things but not when I drive. I often do audio for re-read of series books.
A good narrator can carry through a book that might otherwise be dnf.
I'd rather listen to text-to-speech than a narrator that sounds wrong to me.
It throws me out of the story when characters are voiced contrary to author description.

Absolutely!

And LJ, the only reason I made it through the Flavia de Luce books is because the narrator was wonderful. I think I would have quit after the first without her.

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments Not sure if "reading" is the word, but I just found out that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi is reading the full text of James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl over 10 episodes in an effort to raise money for @PartnersInHealth. He's asked other celebrity friends (and some celebrities he's yet to meet!) to join in.

I don't have a good track record with listening to audiobooks, but I thought I might give it a try: James and the Giant Peach. Pretty good so far. Kinda fun and funny with the readers.

I like how they allow themselves to make mistakes, just as if one was reading aloud to a group of kids.

Also... Patrick Stewart is reading a Shakespeare sonnet each day on Instagram. Someone has collected them into a playlist on YouTube: A Sonnet A Day by Sir Patrick Stewart.

in box set. I liked the characters, suspense and romance plot for each book but reading about shifters confined to what is essentially reservation and only allowed in human world as collared indentured servants is not my thing. I'm always hyper-sensitive about reservations, regardless of term used, but with humans allowed to kill a shifter if the human feels threatened this was not good time to read these.

L J | 714 comments Never Say Spy (Never Say Spy, #1) by Diane Henders Never Say Spy by Diane Henders.
Not a cozy but this thriller suspense comedy spy story has some laugh out loud, if hard to believe, moments as middle aged bookkeeper Aydan Kelly finds herself in the middle of gun fights, spy special operations and more. Moving and renovations are enough to deal with so she didn't need the rest added to her life. On the other hand, hunky men that look like fantasies brought to life... things aren't all bad. Some are comparing it to the Stephanie Plum books but it more reminds me of some campy, usually sexy, spy novels I read in the 1970's. I'm putting this on my romantic suspense list but it doesn't have much romance, though later books may have more. Thriller suspense is genre I no longer read much so I'm not ready to commit to the series. Kindle and paperback of Book 15 came out July 1, 2020.

Ellen Byron | 26 comments I'm trying to read more suspense since I've got a WIP that's in the genre. I just finished Ruth Ware's THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10 - I know, I know, 2016 release, I'm way behind - and I have to say, I didn't love it. The reveal is a plot twist Agatha Christie used on at least one occasion. I saw the book described as an "homage to Agatha Christie" but... I don't know. I feel like when someone uses the structure or reveal of another author, it's a big more than an homage. I.e., several recent mysteries have used the AND THEN THERE WERE NONE structure under the guise of homage. Am I being too rigid? If so, I need to re-read some Dame Agathas for new plot ideas!!

Barbara Sousa | 504 comments I finished Who Rescued Who by Victoria Schade last week. It is a cute chick-lit/rom-com book with a story set up that would have lent itself to a cozy mystery book. After losing her job, the MC traveled to England to get an inheritance and ended up in a quaint town. I kept expecting there to be a murder for her to investigate, LOL. (Oh, and yes, there is a cute dog in the story).
