Cody | 348 comments i am fairly certain that this is in the wrong place but it is something i am trying to read so we will see.

if i have a day when i am off goodreads or even if i dont get a chance to look at ork, i have a few comments to read (mainly thanks to the chatterboxes here lol)

as soon as i press the bell symbol and have read the first new comment bit, all of the red new icons disappear evn though i hav not read them. is there a way to keep them there until i have read the comment?

this wek hasnt been as bad as i have basically been listening to music on youtube with goodreads open whilst decorating but i was out all morning / midafternoon and i had perhaps 15 comments i wanted to read

message 1604: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments Cody, Are you using a computer or the app in a phone or similar?
This is what I do. If I am using my computer, I open the bell in a new tab. Then I open each new thread I want to read in a new tab. It sounds messy, but it works great for me.

If I am using the app (in my phone, ipad or kindle) I touch the bell, And I start reading the threads from the first in time to the last. Not sure if I am being clear in my explanation. If I have 15 notifications I start not for the first in the list (this is the newest) but for the oldest in time (the 15th in the list). That way each time I go back to read a new notification, I don't get confuse about which notifications are new: all the notifications above the last I read are new. There is no way, at least that I know, to keep the red "new" in the notifications you didn't read yet.

Another way you can use in both, computer and app, is to touch on the name of the group, and when you are in the group's main page, go to the unread messages. In the app is the first thing you find after the group's rules. In the webpage there is a "unread" link in the same line as the "discussion board" title.

I hope this makes sense and is useful!

Lilisa | 2770 comments What, Janice is going to post the 2018 challenge thread tonight??? How did I miss that! Is there a countdown for the big reveal? 😋

message 1606: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sandra's second way is how I do it too, both in the app and on the website. My notifications are rarely over 6 so it's manageable.

@Lilisa: estimated time of announcement is 7.30pm Janice time. Not sure when that is exactly for me but definitely in the middle of the night, so I won't be up for the countdown ;-) I know what I'll be doing first thing in the morning though!

message 1607: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Peggy, thx for the unveiling time! So 7:30 p.m. today Janice's time will be your tomorrow 3:30 a.m. - so happy gophering morning to you! 😋

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh, thanks for figuring that out! :)

The in-laws are coming over at 10 am so I think I won't be able to do much more than have a quick peek at the challenge...

I don't use notifications except for specific threads if I'm expecting a response.

I click on Community, then Discussions. I have mine set to "groups". Across the top it reads "showing groups, book, both".

I then click on the first thread that shows a red link for new threads. When I finish reading the thread, I go to the top of the page. Underneath the "Search" field on the right hand side, there is a link "unread topics". I click on it and read the next unread thread. I continue the process until there are no threads left in the "unread folder".

There is another way to get to the "unread folder". From inside the group, click on Discussions. At the top of the page there are two tiny links "new topic, unread". Click on the "unread" link and it will load the unread folder.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I reading in tandem The Iliad/The Odyssey. And the modern scholar guide to go with it which I cannot find a link for

message 1625: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Wow Travis you really are going classical! I listened to The Odyssey earlier this year but i didn't get to the iliad. Be interesting to hear if you feel you get a lot more out of it with the great scholers help! It can be hard to link those suckers.

message 1626: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2652 comments @Travis: that was one of my favorite classic books. I liked Homeros when I was in secundary school.

I'm currently reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts One and Two. But is it only me, because I find it hard to connect with the book. Maybe because it is written for a play or because it isn't written by Rowling, but there's something different to it.

message 1627: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I've read The Odyssey but never the Iliad. This professor is the same one who did a course on Dante. Now, let's face it there is probably not any book ever written as complex as the Divine comedy. So the lecture was quite in depth and detailed. Really broke the book down piece by piece. I'm just not finding the course on Homer as good. It's still beneficial just by breaking down the characters. This person is married to this or son of him or whatever. I suppose at the end of the day though the poem is just not that complex once you get the players and the set up for the story.

message 1628: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2652 comments I still need to read the Divine Comedy. I don't like it when classics like Illiad and Homeros are cut in pieces and analized. If you read the story once, afterwards you can think about and understand the characters, the set up... If you re - read it again, then the story will get much clearer.

At this moment I'm reading 'Harry Potter and the cursed child', but it's not like the other books. Maybe it's because it's not written by Rowling or it's a play, but it sometimes annoyes me.

message 1629: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments You will need the Divine Comedy guide. You'll be glad that one is broken down because of it's complexity . Scholars have been analyzing and debating the various meanings forever and they still don't feel they fully understand the Divine Comedy

message 1630: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2652 comments Thanks for the hint! I've heard that 'Ulysses' is also one of the very complex written books, almost not understandable.

I find it interesting that American schools read and analyze classics. Here, in our schools, we didn't have that.

message 1631: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments The Modern Scholar: Dante and his Divine Comedy this is the one that I used and came recommended from a few people. It was very well done. Not sure if they're available in a non audio form or not to be honest. I never looked.

I don't think i'll ever be brave enough to tackle the divine comedy, even with help! I can see see how it would have been helpful on the who's who front with homer. Did you ever read The Penelopiad? It's penelopies side of the story. It dark but humorous.

@cody - enjoy! I'm hoping to hold out til xmas on Oathbringer

this is the first series where i am reading in time and the book is delayed (MJS bok every six months is doesnt count) and i am a bit lost in truth, remembering characters and wondering if i should remember ones i dont.

with the exception of read the other 2 again, how do people generally get around this?

message 1636: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments A lot of people seem to reread! I'm lucky in that i read the first 2 this year. Perfect for no 3 but the series is planed up to around 10 - yikes!!!

I'm trying a new rule of not starting a series til the last part is published. Great in theory but then amazon has a sale on part 1's @#£%

message 1637: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments @Cody - sometimes rereading is the only way! It depends on how much you don't remember bothers you too, really. I have stopped in the middle of a third book of a trilogy to go back to the second book to find something out and ended up starting at the first again and reading straight through. That was in a trilogy where I read the books as they were published. I have done for pleasure too, because I enjoyed the story so much.

I plan to see if I can find a summary online of book 1 and 2 and refresh my memory. I read them in 2016 I think. I remember the main events but not the details. I think in many series books there's also some information about earlier events to trigger your memory so that's helpful too. And if I'm really confused: google.

Haha, I often try that rule too but I haven't been very successful ;-)

Read this a while back. Gave it 3 stars. To me it followed the paths of some of the well known classic sci fi books that it made it a bit predictable. It didn't have the fast pace feel that I like in a book such as this.
