What Are You Reading? - 2017.1
I am reading Push by Jared Garrett, and if you like some good dystopian fun that's heavier on action than romance you should check it out (and the first book, Beat)! So fun.

I'm all for dark and disturbing books, But I think I'm too chicken to read either of those, even though I'm curious.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Dem. It's been *the* book for the past 6 months over here.
I'm starting The Lonely Hearts Hotel. This has been compared to The Night Circus (one of my favourite books) and was longlisted for the Baileys Prize this year. Apart from that, I don't really know anything about it.
I finished The Nix for the sai king recommends group read and the all about me challenge. It was awesome. A 5 star read. I'm now starting a new series with The Last Wish. Just heard it will be made in to a tv series so i thought I'd better get started on it. I'm reading it for the all about me challenge.
Kristie wrote: "I'm so glad you loved The Nix, Sarah. I hope to read that one."Highly recommend the audio

Thanks. I'll plan on that.
It has had a lot of hype. I wasn't sure whether I was going to like it or not. But it was fantastic. Great writing. Great characters. Interesting themes.

The Dry is sitting on my shelf along with Cloudstreet. Oh lord - there aren't enough hours in the day :-(
I'm currantly reading The Handmaid's Tale and despite my love of Atwood I'm not loving this.
Peggy wrote: "I'll start The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper today, for the survey challenge."That is on my wishlist. I really hope you don't like it 'cos if you rave about it I know I'll end up buying it lol
Margo, I read Cloudstreet a couple of years ago as part of a buddy read and really enjoyed it. It's a bit strange at times but very good all the same. Sorry to hear you are not loving The Handmaid's Tale.
I'm on the island of New Guinea with Lost in Shangri-la: A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of World War II and re-reading - which I rarely do - A Gentleman in Moscow.
It's a long weekend here, it's 27-30 degrees, boyfriend has to work today and tomorrow, and I'm about to start The Hero of Ages. Small things can make me very happy :)(I do not mean to sound as if bf being away is something that makes me happy, but it is nice to have two whole days quietly to myself with a good book, sitting outside in the shade, enjoying the lovely weather ;-))
Perfectly understandable, Peggy. I love my husband and kids, but some days I would give my right arm to have some quiet time for myself...
I am currently reading three books:
Strange the Dreamer 39% - I'm starting to enjoy this one, though to be honest not much has happened. It started out a bit meh for me, but I'm more engaged now.
The Handmaid's Tale 27% - I'm not loving this one. Partly, it's the writing style. Well, I guess mostly it's the writing style. I feel like I'm at a part where it might get interesting, but I don't know. I'm just not feeling it. I'm hoping to finish before the end of the month for the monthly challenge. I think it's probably good that I have a fairly short time frame as a goal to push me to read it.
The Forever Summer 6% - I just started this one, but it has promise. I feel like I may be in a bit of a slump, where every book feels a bit meh right now, but I'm hopeful with this one already. I plan to read a bit more before bed.
Kristie stick with The Handmaid's Tale. I wasn't impressed with the first 30% but I got hooked soon after. Interesting story but not exactly uplifting. Cat's Eye is definately my favorite Atwood.
Thanks, Margo. Good to know. I'm not sure if I'll finish on time for the challenge, but I will stick with it.
I've just finished The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. What a wonderful book! I loved the story, the characters, all of it. I don't write enough reviews. I'm going to have to think a bit to come up with something worthy of such an enjoyable read. I highly recommend this one (something else I don't do very often).
I needed a bit of a break from the bleakness of December, so started a quick read of All Hallows Heartbreaker for my Survey Challenge. I haven't found much of a story to it yet - just vampire sex. Oh well, diversions are us.ETA - I just checked the page length, and it's too short for the survey. :(
I finished A Stranger in Mayfair for the Survey Challenge. It was a good mystery. I loved how effortless Finch brings Victorian London to life. It is #4 in a series, but the first I read. I will probably go on with the series.I also read The Lottery. OMG, I am still speechless. So much in so little pages! Powerful.
I started A Map of the World this morning and I am already engaged to the beautiful prose.
The Lonely Hearts Hotel is going back on my TBR. It's been heavily compared to The Night Circus but apart from some lyrical, whimsical writing, it's nothing like it. I didn't dislike it by any means but I was in the mood for something magical and a bit lighter in tone and this book is anything but! The few chapters I read were very dark. I will come back to it when I am in the mood for that kind of thing.
I finished Elantris on audiobook last night. I'll start my next audiobook tomorrow with the toppler - Beartown
I started The Butterfly Garden yesterday for the July group read. Not entirely sure how I feel about it so far, but it is intriguing if nothing else.
Janice wrote: "I finished Elantris on audiobook last night. I'll start my next audiobook tomorrow with the toppler - Beartown"What did you think of Elantris?
I finished The Last Wish for the all about me challenge and I really enjoyed it. It's number 1 in the series but it wasn't the first book released here in the uk. I believe book 3, a full novel, was translated and released here first. Book 1 and 2 are collectons of short stories but they occur chronologically before the novels start. So now book 1 and 2 are released, I'm starting there. Feels weird to start with short stories but it's all good. Now on to The Butterfly Garden for the group read. I couldn't stand being between books so started this yesterday and I'll continue it on my train journey later but then I'll have to set it aside for the toppler.
Almost completed the last of the Locke and Key series last night but I fell asleep. Finished A Man Called Ove few days back. 5 star read. Finished yesterday Blaze I'm tore between a 3 or a 4. Was pretty good.
I've just read the short kindle only locke & key stories but I wasn't all that impressed. The graphic novels however are awesome. That last one is really good from what I recall.
Sarah wrote: "Janice wrote: "I finished Elantris on audiobook last night. I'll start my next audiobook tomorrow with the toppler - Beartown"What did you think of Elantris?"
I wasn't sold on it at the beginning. But it picked up momentum and I really enjoyed it once things became quite tense. I guess it was the world building that made it a bit dry.
I struggled with reading time and feeling engaged the end of May, so I have put aside The Handmaid's Tale and The Forever Summer for now. I plan to finish them both eventually, but it won't be before the toppler. I am hoping to finish Strange the Dreamer before the toppler begins.
I'm pleased you ended up enjoying it. I listened to it too and enjoyed the narrator (although I can't remember who it was now).
It was narrated by Jack Garrett. I don't think I've listened to his work before. I thought he did quite well.
Finished The Foundling: The True Story of a Kidnapping, a Family Secret, and My Search for the Real Me

I put my other books aside until after the toppler. Now, I am re-reading The Gunslinger and just started A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty.
I finished Hero of Ages right before the toppler. I've now almost finished Blood Bound and will start Britt-Marie Was Here after that.
I finished The Gunslinger and was really glad I did the re-read. I have the urge to re-read the rest of the series now. I may see if I'll have time to fit it in sometime in the future. I might go with the audio version this time like I did with my Harry Potter re-read. It is nice to have a different format. I am just starting Black-Eyed Susans for the toppler. It also fits our monthly theme and the yearly challenge for me. I'm looking forward to it because it has a lot of good reviews.
I finished Beartown which is my first 5 star of the year. And I also finished The Ballroom, I'm now reading The Long Hard Road Out of Hell and The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender, all for the toppler.
