Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments The Bear and the Nightingale The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden I am really enjoying this fairytale set in Medieval Russia.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Thank you! This is awesome. How can you go wrong with Ian McKellan! And Fagles is thought to be the best translation, so even better.

Thank you :D

ROFL! I almost had to catch my own breath after that.

Margo | 11663 comments I'm listening to Himself and it is wonderful! It is set in the ireland I grew up in, 1970's, and peopled with absolute nutters! It is a weird and wonderful murder mystery, totally surreal, full of ghosts and superstistions and great old country saying from the west of ireland. Think Father Ted meets Miss Marple.
This is her first novel but I think we will hear more from this lady.

That one is on my TBR, Margo. I got it for Christmas and actually started reading it just before New Year, but I put it to one side because I wanted to start this year with a clean slate and not have any books left over from 2016. I really enjoyed the few chapters I read and am looking forward to picking it up and reading it properly this time.

Thanks. It's not my usual kind of book but it must have been the right time for me. Sorry you didn't like it.

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I am reading The President's Hat which is just a cute/fun read about a hat that gets lost and picked up by different people. Each person that is in possession of the hat has some kind of positive change in their lives. I'm up to the 4th person.

Last night I started Dark Matter which is a sci fi thriller by the same author who wrote the Wayward Pines series. It is intriguing to the point that I have no idea what is going on, lol.

I listened to Dark Matter and enjoyed it Lisa. It's pretty mind bending all right! I recently bought Pines on the basis that I enjoyed that one.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Wolf's Hour. What a great twist on an espionage story. Nothing like a spy who is a werewolf. Very enjoyable tale.

I have already started Slade House for the group read.

I read some more while on the treadmill. It sure does make our lives seem so small when thought of that way.

I read the first book in the Pines series. I enjoyed it but I think I will like this one more.

There are way too many series out there.

message 615: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished Pogingen iets van het leven te maken / The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, 83¼ Years Old and I absolutely loved it. One of my best reads this year so far.

message 616: by Peggy (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Fifth Season which I rated 4 stars. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting Rawblood for this month's Gothic theme.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Last Kingdom on audiobook for the monthly challenge. The narration was excellent!

Next up is The Visitant for the Survey challenge.

message 622: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I read the last kingdom and listened to the rest of the series. Used a few narrators. Which one did last kingdom have Janice.?

message 623: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments To be honest. the Last Kingdom was my least favorite. I couldn't get into it. I've always suspected it was because I read instead of listened. I also can't remember which narrator I like the best

message 624: by Janice, Moderator (last edited May 07, 2017 07:53PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments It was narrated by Jonathon Kreeble. It looks like he narrated the first 4 books in the series and then the narrator was switched.

The Last Kingdom did bog down a bit in the middle, but then it ramped up for the ending.

message 625: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I just finished,The Boy on the Bo, The Boy on the Wooden Boxby Leon Leyson. This could be the flip side of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This is a true story about a 10 year old Jewish boy in Poland when Germany invades. He tells his story of how he and his family lived and just tried to survive what they went through. He is, I believe, the youngest one on Schindler's List. Without Schindler and his list of factory workers Leon and his parents and two siblings would not have lived through the war.

Now I am reading a PIFM(Pick it for me) book, Inside Mrs. B.'s Classroom, Inside Mrs. B.'s Classroom: Courage, Hope, and Learning on Chicago's South Side by Leslie Baldacci. Mrs. Baldacci used to be a journalist for the Chicago Sun Times. She decides to quit her job and enroll in a 2 year grad program that certified her as a teacher in an inner city school. So far I am reading about her time as a 7th grade teacher dealing with the kids who's lives are surrounded by poverty and crime. So far it is a good one.

I'll probably shuffle Beartown into next month now that I'm reading another new release.

I'm reading The Best of Adam Sharp, by the author of The Rosie Project. I got it through netgalley and it fits my year long challenge.

I have the Best of Adam Sharpe sitting on my shelf. I'll be interested to see what you think.

[book:My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry
was pretty good.

Travis sivarT wrote: "Have any if the Beartown prospectors read A Man Called Ove? I picked that up in a sale a while ago but haven't listened to it yet."

I liked Ove but I can also like sarcasm. He was supposed to be an old man and if was really in his 70's or older I think it would have been better.

Did you enjoy it Lisa? I've had it on my tbr for a long time already.

message 633: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm not sure if Ove will be for me it not. Hopefully I'll enjoy it. Now that I think about it, it was free I didn't even pay for it

message 634: by Lisa (last edited May 09, 2017 04:31AM) (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments Peggy

I really did. It was from the perspective of a young boy, Leon, so it was not too graphic and it was a fast read.

I am probably one of the few people who never saw Schindler's List and didn't know about him. Now I will read more. He saved so many Jews during the war at a big cost to himself. The world needs more people like him.

Looking at some of your books I'm not sure if it will be a good fit for you. Tell us how it goes.

message 636: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19227 comments Ove took me a while to get into. I almost put it down because I didn't like him or the story initially, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I agree with Lisa. He seemed much older than he was supposed to be. I also read Britt-Marie, which was good. My favorite was Grandmother. There is a fairytale aspect and all the characters are represented. I liked the characters.

For anyone looking at reading some of his books, I'd read Grandmother before Britt-Marie. Britt-Marie is a character in Grandmother, which occurs first. You see how she ended up where she is and you are introduced to the other characters they talk about.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks for the heads-up Kristie :)

message 638: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments One can never tell because every so often I pick a book up that is completely out of my normal genre and I love it. Of course sometimes I hate them too.

message 639: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I loved A Man Called Ove. Backman's books typically portrayed a lovable curmudgeon. I've heard that Beartown breaks from that mold.

message 640: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm starting The Crimson Petal and the White for the Teletex challenge. It's a doorstop so I don't know if I will get it finished by the end of the month, but I will certainly try!

Good luck with it Lisa - I struggled with that one.

I'm listening to a book that I previously read on kindle, Asking For It Asking for it by Louise O'Neill . It's only out on audible last month and it's one off the few book releases that I was really excited about. I'm a bit disappointed that the audio hasn't really added an y new dimension to the book.

It is a really powerful YA novel that forces the reader to consider the issues faced by young people concerning body image, social media, consent and much more. This one is a harrowing read/listen but is well worth the effort.

message 642: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19227 comments I just finished The Serpent King. It was really good. It is YA, but the writing was good and the story just draws you in.

I am now reading The Trophy Child. I just started, but the first chapter was good, so I have high hopes.

I'm listening to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It's been so long since I read this series that I realized I have forgotten things. I'm still really enjoying listening to the story as narrated by Jim Dale.

I plan to pick up Three Little Words soon. I'm hoping to have a lot of reading time this week so I can get to it quickly. We shall see.

message 643: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished the group read Slade House which was fab. A 5 star read for me. I also finished The Ghost Brigades buddy read over the weekend, another 5 star. Now I'm in limbo. Still reading The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness, and Recovery until tomorrow when I pick up my library reservations. Then I'll be starting The Nix for the Sai King recommends group read and Norse Mythology. I might be able to use it for the all about me challenge.

The Trophy Child sounds good. I read Three LIttle Words and liked it.

message 649: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I just finished reading two very good books although quite different.

Sugar, Sugar by Bernice L. McFadden. This is my first book by Bernice L. McFadden. I really enjoyed the book and her writing. What a heart wrenching story set in 1955 Alabama. Pearl loses her daughter to a violent crime 15 years prior to her meeting Sugar. Sugar has never known love or goodness in her life. She has only known how to support herself by being a prostitute. Sugar moves to a small town and moves in next door to Pearl. Pearl is the only one in the town to befriends Sugar. In doing so they both begin to heal a little. I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars.

And I also read Inside Mrs. B.'s Classroom, Inside Mrs. B.'s Classroom: Courage, Hope, and Learning on Chicago's South Side by Leslie Baldacci for a challenge about a journalist in Chicago who gives up her career to become a teacher. I loved reading about Mrs. B's first 2 years of intern teaching with kids who come from poverty and violence around them every day. It also tells how the higher ups in her school system don't care about creative teaching or the teachers as much as they care about the standardized testing which does "not" work for all children. Another 4 out of 5 stars for me.

Next I will be starting Live Bait. I read the first one in the series awhile back and finally getting to this one....although I have forgotten the first story.
