Margo | 11668 comments Wow, thats a horrific story Peggy! We've had cases over here a offenders recently released from jail/psychiatric care have reoffended, but to have a relationship with an outside party is a first - unless it was online of postal?

I am just off the phone to audible US after a surreal conversation.
First off they had billed twice for my annual membership. Easily solved you'd think - but it turns out not! My account had 14 credits. After they agreed to refund me it showed 22 credits. I spend 5 min convincing them that they had given me too many credits - WHAT WAS I THINKING??

The upshot was that after 15 min on hold I become 8 credits poorer :((

I was afraid I'd think I lots of credits and than loose them. Not honest - dumb!!

Janice (jamasc) | 60075 comments What a sad situation, Peggy. I feel for what the girl went through and what her family is going through now.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I'm thinking about "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Yes, a fictional character, but one who could well be a real person.

message 3756: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Don't give up on humanity yet. There's still good people in this world. My neighbors church go around and help people in need. They heard about my uncle with cancer and 12 guys showed up today. Some are putting 20 cord of firewood in basement and stacking it and the rest are finishing a carpentry project he had started on one side of the house. Replace rotted wood with plywood then put 2inch insulation sheets on entire side then the enamel coated sheathing over top of it. Heck if he'd bought siding they probably would have done that too but no siding for now. That enamel coated board last quite a while to the elements. Still pretty amazing to see this in action

Sandra (sanlema) | 11301 comments That is awesome, Travis. And touching.

I am traveling home from the Goodreads summit today. I am currently sitting at the airport finishing up my final book for the toppler.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments What a nice story, Travis. There are some really nice people in the world, it's just a shame we tend to only hear about the bad ones.

message 3762: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah. I thought this thread needs a feel good story now and then

message 3763: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Geesh. I cut out a guy. The guy my uncle buys wood from orchestrated it all. He donated the wood about $1200 value and asked the church to take it from there

message 3764: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Now about an equal number of women have shown up with food and coffee. I'm not sure some of the women may be helping with firewood as well. Just don't want to count anyone out. I'd hate to find out someone is a ylto member and thinks hmph Travis didn't even mention us. Although maybe that's how to get inactive members more active in the group lol

It was excellent. There were 17 of us, including mods, authors, and reviewers. It was great to meet everyone and GR was genuinely interested in our ideas. Great time.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds good! :)

We brewed our second batch of beer at home today. It's an oatmeal cookie stout. Can't wait to taste it! Only 5 weeks of patience..

That sounds great. I'm glad you enjoyed it. That was quite an honour to be selected especially since there were only 17 of you. I imagined there would be much more.

message 3774: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments My son just heard that college is cancelled tomorrow due to hurricane alert. It's hard to believe it's really coming - it's so still out at the moment.

message 3775: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments I'm so out of touch with everything right now. I've been in airports/on planes for the majority of the past two days. Hope you all stay safe through the hurricane, Margo.

message 3776: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments When I first read about the hurricane on the news I had to reread. A hurricane?! In Ireland?!

I'm glad our visit is next weekend.

The hurricane is one of the reasons we had temps between 24 and 26 C yesterday, today and tomorrow. It feels like a nice present, so lovely. But also strange, mid-October.

Stay safe tomorrow!

I know, part of me is like "I'll believe it when I see it!" On the other hand, climite change is very real. I have to be on the road at 9am to get my uncle back to hospital for his final week of chemo and radiation so I really hope the winds won't be too bad :-/

message 3779: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments Thanks Kristie and Sandra ;-)

My hubbie just got a message from work that their will be closed tomorrow aswell. My sons college is in the same town that hubbie works. Very low lying area on the banks of the river Shannon, which is prown to flood.

Travis, you haven't posted today. Let us know that you survived the cowing :-/

message 3780: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm good. I was busy watching my quarter back suffer a season ending collar bone break. Which sucks since in 3 weeks I'm going g to see a game in Chicago. And who wants their future hall of fame quarter back out for the season especially with tickets that cost 2 arms and a leg. Oh well. Gotta support the rest of the team

message 3781: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments Ouch... that's awful, Travis. And yes tickets are ridiculous.

message 3782: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes I was surprised by the hurricane. No idea if we'll get any of it here. It did say the West will be hit but I don't know whether they meant Ireland or West England. It's good that places are not risking it and staying closed Margo. If that is happening, I would say they are pretty sure it's going to hit. But it's the anniversary of the Great Storm of 1987 so perhaps they are over reacting given Michael Fish said there was nothing to worry about then.

message 3783: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Stay safe, Margo!

Thanks Lisa. I'm sure we'll be fine :-)

Poor Michael Fish! That will be his epithet lol

The wind is starting to howl now. Hubbie brought uncle back. I am lying on my bed watching a young tree bend over. We planted it soon after we moved into this house, 10 years ago. It was damaged by high winds a while back, I wonder it it will survive this storm?

@Travis, I was concerned about your head not your quarter back ;-p

message 3785: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Hopefully forecasters are making it worse than it will be. Our seem to always do that. But looks like it's about as minor a hurricane as you can get hit by so that's something anyway. Not that the sustained winds won't make a real mess of things. And ocean damage to coastal region. Hopefully everyone heeds whatever warnings there are. That's usually the most important thing.

Still stay safe Margo hopefully it is uneventful for everyone

message 3786: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Wind has got up here but it's not even gale force yet. But we have had some seriously apocalyptic skies here. This morning the sky was pink, then a weird orange, just before lunch yellow and it now has a weird green tinge to it. It's overcast but the odd clouds as the sun is still visible but coming through just with odd colour tinges. It got so dark at one point. No rain though. Very odd.

message 3787: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments My power is flickering on and off and so is my wi-fi. I may loose contact. Half ireland is predicted to loose power this pm.

message 3788: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Anyone ever read Scythe. It's a daily deal on audible. Sounds pretty cool but it's YA and they get very hit and miss for me.

message 3789: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Sarah, we have got odd coloured sky here too. It was sunny earlier but it has now clouded over and gone a funny grey/yellow colour. We are not supposed to get any effects from the hurricane here in the South East, but the sky is looking seriously strange right now.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Stay safe Margo! And those in Wales and the West of England. It's my default weather advice. If you don't know about it, ie it's not normal, exercise severe amounts of caution!

I find it serves me well in the land of extreme unpredictability.

message 3791: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I forgot to refresh before posting. Good photography skies then? Always looking for an upside!

message 3792: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments For those of us outside Ireland and the UK, there are some good videos and pictures of the sky here:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/liv...

This is all very odd.

message 3793: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I read Krakatoa for the toppler and found myself googling for pictures or paintings of the sky. All around the world the volcano eruption gave colors similar to what's being described here. Although eerie is usually my go to descriptive term

I listened to the sample clip and decided to pass. I haven't found their daily deals to be all that interesting since the coupons from the last sale were deposited into peoples' accounts.

message 3795: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60075 comments I hope the hurricane blows over and doesn't amount to anything.

message 3796: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Definitely Rusalka. I tried taking a few pictures but my phone camera doesn't do it justice.
