Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's middle of the night to me KimeyDiann! I have to get up at 7am and that's plenty early for me. It's okay in spring and summer when it's already light outside and birds are singing, but I have a lot of trouble with it in winter.

I would like a dog someday but I don't really like the thought of having to get up 30 minutes earlier in the morning and taking him out. Again, probably not so bad in summer, but winter...

I think my brother-in-law often gets up at 5am just to go to the gym before work. My sister got up an hour early for work for a while so she could watch another episode of The Walking Dead on Netflix. There isn't much to get me out of bed early.

message 1452: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments I'm very fortunate that my husband walks the dogs (and the cat) every morning. I usually check my Facebook and Goodreads before I even get out of bed.

I agree, not much can make me get out of bed early, at least on a daily basis. If it's something we're doing occasionally I don't really mind. I have a class coming up that I need to attend for 4 Saturdays and I need to leave the house by 6:30am. It's going to be awful for me, but I will look forward to listening to a book in the car.

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments I tried so hard to start going to the gym in the mornings with a coworker. I made it 3 times before giving up. Mornings are for sleep!

message 1454: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Good effort though!

I tried going to the gym right after work and even quit that after 3 months or so. I bought a pass for a year.

I really should be doing some sports though.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Now excersising I have managed to do. First I switched to light beer and usually only have one most weekdays. Next came what am I going to do with all this free time that usually was spent drinking beer. Better excercise. I mean the motivation here was a growing beer belly that was becoming ever more unattractive. Then my knee was sore because farming can be quite rough on the body. For years fintness equipment had been accumulating above my milk house. Basically I have a whole gym up there. Been working out probably near 2 months now. Haven't lost any weight but the guy is shrinking. Muscle weighs more than far so you should never worry if you're gaining weight or staying the same. Probably your adding muscle. I usually eat lunch with the family which is their dinner. Then my dinner is after they've gone to bed. I've lasted several weeks now eating primarily salad for that meal.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not sure if anyone is familiar with Mel Robbins. She has a ted talk called how to stop screwing yourself over. There isn't anything revolutionary in it I think it's so popular because ppl just need to hear it said out loud. Anyway she has a book coming out called The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage. Moral of her stance quit debating with the boice in your head. You don't need motivation. Motivation is an excuse. If you want to do. Decide and act within 5 seconds. Count it out if you want. You must count down. 5 4 3 2 1. It changes the way your brain works. So I'm excersising, eating more healthy, listening to these self help type things and just started Rich Dad, Poor Dad to begin to become more educated in finances.

Evidently I had an epiphany in my sleep one night because all these things just happened I didn't plan or really think about doing any of it. Other than turned 35 years old. It was right after my birthday I started things for some reason. The agriculture environment isn't too good financially. I spent a lot last fall at chiropractors because my back hip ankles all were bothering me. I don't know I think I just realized all of a sudden life can be more enjoyable but it's up to me to decide to make some change

message 1460: by Laura (Lclwags) (new)

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments Travis - I love the 5 second rule idea! There are so many times that I debate long enough and talk myself into or out of something. I'm going to give it a try. :)

message 1461: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments That's great, Travis. I always tell my kids if you want a change in your life, you have to make it. No one else will do it for you. You just need to make a decision and take action. Inaction is also a decision, so basically your life is in your hands. Sounds like you just took action and I'm sure good things will come of it and your body will feel better.

I just listened to her speech regarding the 5 second rule thanks to your suggestion. It is really interesting. I'll listen to the TED talk this evening when I'm not at work. I find that I definitely fall into the "I don't feel like it" trap she talked about. Or even worse than the I-don't-fee-like-it, I have the "I'll do it later" thoughts a LOT. Of course, later often doesn't come.

I keep telling myself I'm going to start working out and stick to it, but then I have the "I don't feel like it" thought, which is just part of a vicious cycle. Not being active and taking care of yourself will make you feel worse, and therefore makes you not feel like working out, which makes you feel worse and so on.

I'm so glad I'm waiting on someone else before I can move on to the next task at work right now. It gave me time to log into GR and see these posts which are inspiring me to give myself a nice kick in the rear to stop putting things off! I needed this! I'm working out tonight and starting back down the path I set for myself at the beginning of the year.

message 1464: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm not sure why motivational soeakers work. They really don't tend to tell you anything an intelligent human being doesn't know. And yet there is something about hearing it out loud and delivered in such a confident and sure way that it will inspire. I guess confidence is contagious. I mean if you're out with someone and they say let's do this. If they deliver that in a doubt free confident way the next thing you will also start thinking yeah we can do this. Whatever it may be. The human mind is a funny thing.

message 1465: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I guess it is sort of like a really good sales pitch can convince you to buy something you don't really need. *grumblekitchencharmcookwaregrumble*

At least in (most) self-help/inspirational books and speeches, it convinces you to make positive changes in your life.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments After much talk of it. Of course we went back to winter weather a few times so it wasn't just procrastination but waiting for weather cooperation the wife and I got up at 430 and took a 2 mile walk. Totally to get me walking my wife runs several times a week after work and has been for years. Nice of her to join my insanity . Turned out to be a very brisk walk very near a jog as I had the dog on his leash and he basically set the pace for us

message 1470: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Actually back in February I tried to walk 1/2 mile, run a 1/2 then walk a 1/2. For a 1.5 mile total . My knee couldn't take it which is why I had to start strength training. It's like some vicious cycle. Well let's see if by the end if the year I can be in as good of shape as I was 10 years ago. Probably even only 5 years ago. I think 2012 I started on a prescription that seems to have just killed my metabolism. I sure do miss those days of freedom without consequences. Oh eat a gallon of ice cream for supper and still lose 2 lbs from it lol. Maybe not that exact scenario but I don't think my weight had changed for at least 10 years until I started those meds then gained 50 lbs in 5 years. Getting old sucks

message 1471: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My brother in law's, brother in law, is an ultra racer. He does 100 mile races. Takes him about 9 hours to complete one. I find him to be a walking model of insanity. Who wakes up like ah guess I'll take a bit of a 100 mile run today

He usually finishes too ten. Last time he was first place for 87 miles then finished 2nd

I am under "house arrest". Influenza. I am working for home this week, trying to keep that nasty thing to myself. I rarely get sick but this one got me. 4 days of fever. I am over that now but I am a tad tired. At least I get to work in my pj's. and I do have a good excuse to indulge sitting down with a hot drink and a book.

Entirely agree. I am so very much with you, my metabolism went from over active to nothing. So my problem was I never needed an exercise habit as I was always a slip of a thing no matter what I ate or did. And then something happened, and I started putting on weight, and I didn't know how to deal with it. Good on you with your strength training and habit setting! Will check out the talk too.

Kristie | 19326 comments I just watched Mel Robbins' TEDx Talk. I love the way she describes parenting yourself and pulling the "emergency brake". She describes the force needed to break your routines so well. I will have to read her book. I'm happy to see that it is available as an audio, which she narrates herself.

Kristie | 19326 comments Hope you feel better quickly, Esther!

message 1480: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm in the middle of the audio Kristie. It's a book that needs to be listened to by her. She wrote it more like a long speech as many of these type of books are. They make more sense with an author reading who knows how to present the information and she knows how from going around the country speaking. I feel like it would be weird to read the print of it . Like I say though this is the way I feel on many of these books if people write them like they talk instead of writing like a writer.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Hope you feel better, Esther!

Okay, so I have to confess.... I didn't exercise last night. But I have a legit excuse for why I didn't feel like it! I had a bad headache and had to take meds and go to bed. So I'm not looking at it as failing in my goal for yesterday, that was out of my control. Today is a new day!

I'm like Rusalka, I was always very thin (too thin actually), but the older I get the slower my metabolism gets. I'm still thin by most people's standards, but I have to be aware of how I eat and how active I am now when I in years past I never had to worry about it. It has been an adjustment that I'm still struggling with.

message 1483: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I think metabolism starts to slow down around 32 or something, perhaps earlier in men. Which is why our old habits for food and exercise can start to catch up on us. I'm enjoying my weekly swimming and I would like to fit in another session some time too. Now it's getting warmer, I am going to get the canoe out. The plan was that I would canoe whilst my partner cycled along the towpath and then we would swap over for the return journey. That way both arms and legs get a workout. Im looking forward to getting started with this.

Good luck with the interview Peggy. Sounds like you're in the right mindset for it already :-)

Sorry to hear you've been unwell Esther. As Travis said, the flu has been bad this year.

I've been ill this week but I'm not sure what the problem is. I had a fever on Monday and nausea. The nausea is the worst I've ever had. I had to lay down most of Monday and Tuesday as if I sat up or stood up I couldn't handle it and it almost made me faint when I stood up once. It's eased off since then but it's affected my appetite a great deal which is VERY unlike me. I hate being ill.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well my book just told me telling yourself you're excited before going into a job interview, one example, it's apparently proven you do better than people who say I'm nervous. I use the job interview as Peggy is headed there. Since the post said I'm a little nervous and excited I don't know how that works. I guess throw out the nervous thought and just tell yourself you're excited Peggy. The results will be better.

Could be public speaking, meeting someone new etc. etc

message 1498: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Sarah you remind me of when I recently read Ben Hur. He had been sent to row on a ship as punishment for a crime (one he didn't commit which doesn't matter for what I'm talking about). Anyway he says on the rowing ships they never move from one side to the other so rowers only work half their body, primarily upper body in this case. Ben Hur spoke with the master said he needed to row on both sides because he wanted even muscle tone.

The switch from rowing to cycling is actually a terrific idea and a heck of a lot cheaper than a gym membership
