Wish I could get past my reservation and listen to Hobbit myself! Except, I loved it in the book form so much and would not have abandoned it.. Hmmm...

message 52: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments Girish I think you would love it more if you listened to the audio.

Rebecca | 878 comments The Hobbit

My Rating 2/5

Waded ploddingly on till about 60 %. To enjoy a book I need to see the picture of the people and places in my mind. But for the life of me I just couldn't make up a picture of The Hobbit, the Dwarfs or the Kingdom under the mountains. Switched onto an audio book at 60 % and it proved to be a life saver. If not for it I would have abandoned the book yes even at 60%. No this one was not endearing enough..

Rebecca | 878 comments The House on the Strand

My Rating 4/5

Daphne Du Maurier you have enthralled me with this once again. A quaint tale, a tale of time travel and What beautiful Prose! Loved it.

Rebecca | 878 comments Good-Bye, Mr. Chips

My Rating 3/5

A poignant tale- slow paced ,No dramatics, Still so sweet

message 56: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments Currently reading

Volga to Ganga Interesting till time but going very slow

Idiot To resume Part 2 from next week

Started on Bridget Jones Diary. At 50% and hating it. Silly shallow main character who only thinks of Dieting and Boyfriends. Will finish and get off it.

Started on Palace of Illusions to rid off the sour taste of Bridget. Only finished first chapter. Looks good.

Rebecca! Is the book a romance? I could use it for a challenge then...

I liked BJ. ..she is whiny, but she made me feel good about myself :P

Palace of illusions is good too.

Not exactly... No It cannot be categorised into romance I think. There is some romance and even adultery going on but not plain simple romance.

Roy's janjyaseni was good in it's original version (Odia) and lost it's essence in translation..but palace of illusion is different ..so no losing hope

and Pattnaik is good with unaltered mythology ,,,his Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharata is a good take on Mahabharat

message 66: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments Yes Jaya in my TBR. I had read Yajnaseni in malayalam.

message 67: by Aparna (new)

Aparna | 279 comments Buddy, how is palace of illusions going ? ...are you liking draupadi's character portrayal by the author ?

message 68: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments Aparna. I am loving Palace. Love Draupadis character. As of now a five starrer. Loving the cute title names fire , blue , birth etc. I never imagined I'd be so engrossed by a book when I know the whole story.

message 69: by Aparna (new)

Aparna | 279 comments Glad you are liking it :)

message 70: by Rebecca (last edited Jan 28, 2017 08:57AM) (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments The Palace of Illusions At about 50%. Loving it. I know most of the stories of Mahabaratha as any other Indian who has been brought up on it. But have never considered the emotions of the characters . This is the second time a character is influencing me deeply that of Draupadi. The first was Bhima in രണ്ടാമൂഴം Randamoozham .

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler At 45%. Interesting. Dont know where it is headed to.

Volga Muthal Ganga Vare വോൾഗ മുതൽ ഗംഗ വരെ Page 219. Not as interesting as the initial chapters. Going slow.

At the Sign of the Golden Pineapple Listening to the Audio. Finished 2 chapters. Cute.

The Idiot Yet to resume Part 2.

The Casual Vacancy At 7%. Grim. Very very Grim. And it is Huge! BR with Aparna.

Loved Adulthood. Will be on the lookout for book 2.

message 73: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments At the Sign of the Golden Pineapple

My Rating 2/5

Started as a spirited story with a spunky heroine. But she fell in love too fast and there was a little bit of crudity in the end which totally jarred with the rest of the book.

Not much of reading being getting done due to work and life.

Planning to start To Sir, With Love a BR with Indrani,
Also want to restart Hamlet in verse. Had left it at 25% last year in spite of loving it. Looks like it may take ages to get back to Idiot. And am 34th through Volga to Ganga. Abandoned The Casual Vacancy as it was just not my type. Want to start one from my mystery list most probably A man lay dead.

Rebecca | 878 comments The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

My Rating 4/5

Wonderful read. Loved the way the short stories prefaced each chapter. Loved Fikry, Amelia and Maya. Any Book lovers dream book. Talks about books books and books.

Rebecca | 878 comments Like Water for Chocolate

My Rating 3/5

Weird, sensual but was an engaging read. Seems like magical realism is an essential part of Latin American Novels.

message 83: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

My Rating 3/5

Well it was good. Fun but a little childish perhaps. After all it is a childrens book.

Rebecca | 878 comments The Pedant in the Kitchen

My Rating 4/5

Loved it. The tone reminded me a little of Three Men in a Boat. Though not a true Pedant I could identify with most of the grievances of the Pedant in the Kitchen. It was amusing and enjoyable.. Never thought I would love a non fiction so.

message 85: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments To Sir, With Love

My Rating 4/5

Loved it so... Had studied an excerpt in school and so was excited about reading it. Fulfilled my expectations and more. A truly inspiring and heartwarming story. And surprised at the real amount of snobbish rascism abroad.

Rebecca | 878 comments The Night Train at Deoli and Other Stories

My Rating 4/5

Long time since I loved a short story collection so. Such homely cosy stories and loved the simple narration. Will surely read more of Bond.

Rebecca | 878 comments Long time since I appeared here. Have learned an important life lesson in the meanwhile That is you cannot win all the battles of life especially if its with a 10 year old for a few hours on the laptop.

But since school has opened here Iam hopefully with a vengeance. Have read many books loved some, abandoned some and hated some.
My plans for June
Reading Farewell, My Friend/The Garden . Started along with Kru, Inadrani ,Gorab and Aka and I think all of them are done with it. A feeling of something amiss now.at 45%. Guess I should try the Blog swansong everyone was raving about. But a breezy read anyway.
To startSapiens: A Brief History of Humankind as part of a group read .
Watership Down from Monday Buddy read with Aparna.
Rainbow Valley Listening to the audio from Librivox read by Karen Savage. I dont know how Anne finds me or I find Anne whenever I need a little bit of comforting. This time it is Anne's children. But so so good like meeting long lost friends.

To start The Illicit Happiness of Other People this weekend. Reco by Shalini
The Day of the Jackal Need to finish it. Reco by HP.

Finish The Namesake and A Game of Thrones both left behind in the hue and cry of BR and Group reads.
