2017 & 2018 Your Reads - currently reading or finished

The book reminds me of a dark 19th century Romantic novel, but with thoroughly modern characters and situations, and a freshness that I don't find in books of the earlier era.
A well-paced story, with interesting characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and will be thinking about it for a while to come.

What did you think of it, Lynn. I keep thinking about starting that series, but never get around to it.

For me, it was good but sort of underwhelming. The premise was good and I liked the format of it. The story was told from an "after the accident" perspective and "before the accident". The reader had to piece together what actually happened.
I received a paperback copy of it from a give away here!
If anyone has it on their list and would like it, I would be happy to mail it off to you. I don't keep paperback books anymore. I like to pass them on to someone else.
I'm currently reading a few books.
I'm reading The Phantom Tollbooth with my grandson. I think it's a bit over his head, but I'm explaining as we go and he's enjoying it. It is quite humorous. We were just in the Doldrums where the Lethargians live. We ended up there because the MC wasn't thinking or paying attention so he got stuck there. The watchdog (a dog with an actual watch/clock for a body) had to come by and get him thinking so he could get unstuck.
I'm also trying to finish up Strange the Dreamer. I hope to finish soon. This one has taken me a while. It's not that the book is bad. I actually think the book is good. I've just been busy in real life and a bit meh about books lately.
Oh, I'm also listening to How to Train Your Dragon with my grandson. I introduced him to audiobooks last summer and he really enjoys them. We listen while we are driving from place to place. I think it's pretty cute and the narrator is really into it, so it's great.
And I'm reading Another Place at the Table in little bits and pieces. It's interesting, but right now it's what I pick up when I "only have a minute." I'm not too far into it yet due to the way I'm reading it, but it could be interesting. I haven't decided yet how much I like it.

I just finished The Kitchen House. It was SO good. It's one that I had to wonder why I had waited so long to read it. It's mostly about a young Irish girl who is orphaned while traveling to America from Ireland. She is taken in as an indentured servant by the boat's captain to pay for her passage. She works in the kitchen house and is basically raised by his slaves, yet she is a white girl, so this causes conflict. The story takes place over many years and you see how all the different relationships develop and how the characters are affected by what happens in their lives and decisions that are made. I kept thinking about it when I couldn't read it. It really got in my head.

I absolutely adore the How to Train Your Dragon books! I prefer them on audio because I really love the narrator. I know there are pictures with the books but I prefer having them read to me! Some of the girls at work also listened to this series but didn't like it as much because they loved the movies. I can understand that because there is quite a bit of difference.

I just finished

I love historical fiction and I came across this show randomly but I wanted to read the book first.

I read this one to fulfill a category on my PopSugar Challenge and I was surprised by the way it is written.

Rachel, we loved the audio too. I agree the book was so much different from the movies. At first, he kept saying, "That's not really what happened." I had to explain that the book was the 'real' story and the movie was made up after. It took a little adjustment for him, but he enjoyed it too.
We are listening to Matilda now. I might be enjoying this one more than he is!

Rachel - I just picked that one up from the library and I'm not sure if I'm in the mood for it. I haven't been hearing great things. Mostly I've heard a lot of it was ok or good, but not great, reviews.

I'm not sure either - I listened to a couple episodes when it was on either Book of the Week or Book at Bedtime on Radio 4, and it did seem hard to follow.

I just finished this one as well - glad you enjoyed it.

Surprisingly good. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I got it from NetGalley so it doesn't come out until January, but I seriously think it will be vey popular when it does.

Before you read too many reviews though, stop. It is better to know less than more.
I was spun out like 3 times and had to do a 180 in my thinking. And I must have said WTF 10 times. lol
Add it to your list and stay away from the reviews.
Which leads me to a question. What do you do with books you read that are published in the future? Would I put this for a new release in 2017 or save it and put it for a new release in 2018?
Glad you loved it, Vicki! I've seen that one around. I may have to check it out. If I'm lucky, it will be at least 1 choice awards nominee that I read for next year!
I'm not sure what you mean about saving it to mark it as a new release??

I am working my way through Never Let You Go, which is so good so far. I'm at 41% and I'm a bit creeped out. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
I've also started Tiger's Curse. I'm not sure how I feel about this one yet. I'm only 6% in. I almost put it down after the prologue, but the first chapters brought us back to current day, so I'm giving it a chance. So far, it has a definite YA feel to it. It's not bad, just different than what I expected.

A reminder about posting in this thread
We like to see a bit of discussion about the books we are reading, rather than just posting the book link (and the occasional link to a review). The comments should include:
- Books you just started or are currently reading. You might want to add a few words about the book to let other members know whether you like it or not so far.
- Books you just finished, Please include your rating (1-5 stars) and a few words about the book (even if it's something as short as "I loved it / hated it.") If you wrote a full review, you can share the link to it but please include a short summary of your thoughts alongside it.

The content is so good. I read some bad reviews and was worried. It’s hard to put down. I have never read any historical fiction about WWII under Mussolini or the fascist reign. Clearly it’s sad and I’m taken in by the passion and risk Pino (protagonist)takes to help people stay safe. He’s so sweet and innocent and he is exposed to the atrocities of race hate for the first time in his life. It’s very suspenseful and terrifying as I route for him each step of the way. I hope it continues in this way.
I'm almost halfway through Leave No Trace. It was really slow to start for me. It's better now, but still won't be a favorite.
I just started The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I forgot this is an epistolary. It's not a style of writing that I generally enjoy and I didn't immediately become engaged in the story, but I just started so I'm hoping it grows on me.

The Shack and One Plus One. If you are an audible listener, you should check it out.

Great summer read, now if we'd only get some summer weather.
