Tim Smith I was put on some medication for insomnia a few years ago in order to help me sleep at least six hours a night. The doctor was hoping that it would only be temporary. I still have to take it every night before going to bed or I don't sleep to well. I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea a put on a c-pap. I still need to take that medicine to get at least six hours of sleep a night. I tend to keep my Kindle, Nook or tablet by my side of the bed if I have trouble sleeping so I can read to help me get back to sleep without waking my wife.

I just get up and do something or else I lay there and stress because I can't sleep, leading to being awake longer. I get a lot of reading done, needless to say.

Zoe Walker is shocked to see her photo on a 'dating ad' in the London Gazette. Soon enough, Zoe realizes women featured in the ad become crime victims. Interesting premise about our 'oversharing' culture. Pretty good mystery. 3 stars

Jan C (woeisme) | 39308 comments I've had insomnia most of my life - I think it runs in my family - my gradfather, my father, my brother. My mother had it once and couldn't believe what the rest of uschad been going through. Not sure if my sister also has it. But Sunday nights are always the worst for me. Not sure why it still is now that I'm retired. I take meds, too; but am not sure how effective they are.

Great time to get more reading in, though.

Well, I haven't had another stroke, so it's all good. And steroids can have much worse side effects than the ones that I had (insomnia, wanting to eat like a horse, and, as it turned out, teeny tiny cataracts). And we have a lot of books floating around, so that was OK, too.

But after over a dozen years on them, I'm only now starting to get my sleep schedule back into shape.

ETA: Ooh, I have Rules of Magic next up, so I'm glad to hear that, Sandy.

Gordon Cope | 10 comments Eavesdrop

I just finished Eavesdrop by Ian Coates. I've never read a mystery/thriller involving a customs inspector in the UK and it was quite intriguing to find out what they do.
Eavesdrop revolves around the efforts of Custom Inspector James Winter as he attempts to run down a smuggling ring. He soon finds himself caught up in international espionage and a terrorist cell intent on igniting war in the Middle East.
The author fleshes out characters very well and is also adept at plotting out the fiendish shenanigans of the terrorists. I was gripped with anticipation right to the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and I recommend it highly. I'm looking forward to the Goodreads Author's release of his second thriller, The Rival.

Tim Smith Earlier I read and reviewed The Policewoman by Justin W.M. Roberts. After my review, the author took my criticism among with other readers and revised the book to try to make it a faster and more enjoyable read. He then sent me a review copy of the revised edition. I just finished reading it. You can read my review at http://world-of-sleuths.blogspot.com/....

Tom Mathews | 1001 comments I just checked out The Man from the Train: The Solving of a Century-Old Serial Killer Mystery, which promises to put closure to the number one cold case from Colorado Springs where I grew up, the 1911 murders of two families in homes right next to each other.
While at the library, I also saw and checked out another new book, Megafire: The Race to Extinguish a Deadly Epidemic of Flame. As my sister lost her home last week in what in now considered the worst wildfire in California history This sounds like a book worth looking into.

I actually started to have reservations when I brought it home from the library. Just leafing through it gave me the impression it was more 460 pages of raw data than a concise assessment. I was floored to see that it didn't even have a index.

I think I would like to read these two books because of the Colorado Springs connection. My brother has a place there and I see your fire book talks about the Waldo Canyon fire - an area it seems we have to drive through to get anywhere.

I lived in Colorado Springs for over 25 years. I'm not sure I ever drove through Waldo Canyon but I remember that every time I drove up Ute Pass (US 24) into the mountains I would see the trail-head into Waldo Canyon. It then moved into town and took out 347 homes. Sadly, that's a pittance compared to what we are seeing now here in California.

Patricia | 17 comments Just starting Glass Houses by Louise Penny. The Inspector Gamache series is one of my favorites. Also reading A Night in Lonesome October by Zelazny. This is my first time read on this one and really enjoying the mystery of reading a chapter a day.
I also suffer from insomnia as do most of my family. I do think it’s hereditary. Sometimes sleep aids don’t even work. So grateful that I have an e-reader. I can read long into the night and not disturb my husband.
I really love relationship driven mystery series. Any suggestions? I read Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley series and am looking for another one or two as these books only come out once a year.

Have you tried Deborah Crombie? Like Elizabeth George, she's an American who sets her books in London and environs. Pretty strong on the relationship building as the series progress - both professional and personal.

I read these articles when word of this book first came up. They are fascinating. I've read the first two chapters so far and am not turned off by it quite yet. Of course, being an amateur genealogist, I probably have a higher tolerance for sifting through minutiae in search of answers than most people.
