Shelf: Kickass Heroine
Book: Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle #1) by Diana Wynne Jones Howl's Moving Castle
Date Read: 5/2
Rating: 5 stars

Review:
This is the second time I've picked up a book by this author for a challenge. And last time I remember wondering why I had never heard of her. And this time I wonder why I let a year go by without reading anything more of hers. I think she is one of the most highly under-rated fantasy authors of recent (yes, 1986 is recent to people of a certain demographic!) times. I can see her influence in many of today's popular fantasy authors. This book is quick & easy, with a world that is quickly fleshed out, but still easy to follow. There is more than a touch of nonsense humor, but for a fantasy lover like myself it is nice to find a fantasy without a love triangle, that doesn't stray into adult, without needing to go heavy with someone like Terry Brooks.

Yay! The other one I read was The Chrestomanci Quartet (Chrestomanci, #1-4) by Diana Wynne Jones . It's a fantasy world, but in each book there was some crossover to Wales.

I had a tough time finding a book too! I was hoping to find First Grave on the Right but no luck!
So, I'm going with
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane for my Owned, Not Read Yet. because "I own it, and haven't read it" LOL!

Laura | 1168 comments I hope Strange the Dreamer or Court of Wings and Ruin are there! I'll check when I get to my computer.

You ladies know how to search the tags of a particular book, rather than searching the shelf, right?

message 359: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 837 comments I went through all 100 pages of it and didn't see either of those :( I was also looking for Strange the Dreamer, no luck :/
I haven't found an easier way to search... I'd love to hear one too!

Sandra | 25908 comments The tips thread is one of the top threads in the Bingo folder. Pays to have a look around when starting a new game :)

message 364: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments For a new book like Strange the Dreamer it might not have enough tags to show up on the shelf, which caps out at 100 pages. So going to the book and checking might find it. I'll check because I'm reading that one in the morning for Tower Teams.

message 365: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments I am not having any luck searching my planned reads for this month, so now I'm off to search the shelf itself. Even Tricky Twenty-Two wasn't on there, and those books are on every list and tagged as everything!

message 366: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments I've been avoiding this one, since the plot synopsis left me thinking there's very little Mercy/Adam in it, but it's on the shelf and it looks like my library can get it to me pretty quickly. So I'll read Silence Fallen (Mercy Thompson, #10) by Patricia Briggs

message 367: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I'm going with A Blood Seduction by Pamela Palmer. I also went through all 100 pages and that's the only one on my to read list that my library had lol.

message 368: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 837 comments I'm thinking I have a fair chance of Shutter Island being good, they made it into a movie. Although that doesn't guarantee a winner! Lol

Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews

Read: 5/2/17
Rating: 4 stars

Review

This is another addicting installment of the Kate Daniels series. The thing I love about these books enough to reread them all the time is how the characters just come alive. This is the first time we meet Andrea and Julie, and Andrews does such a great job of making you feel connected to them right off the bat. This book moves very quickly and is hard to put down. I can't wait to reread number 3!

Book: Silence Fallen (Mercy Thompson, #10) by Patricia Briggs
Date Read: 5/8
Rating: 5 stars

Review:

I was really putting this book off. I read the description and I was sure I didn't want to read it because it seemed that Adam & Mercy weren't going to be together much. And, really, if Briggs keeps them apart in each book, how are we ever going to get to the book where Mercy is pregnant? That's what I want!

Anyway, I was right. They are apart for most of the book. But there are chapters from Adam's point of view. And that made it all right. I really loved this book. I've heard a rumor that it will be the last Mercy book. I refuse to believe it Goodreads has an 11 book listed. there may not be a title, cover picture, or release date, but I still have hope!

Book: Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
by Dennis Lehane
Read: 5/9/17
Rating: 4 Stars
Review: Like falling down a rabbit hole

I had no idea what to expect when staring this book. From the movie trailers I've seen I thought it was a horror book. In some ways it was. But after reading it I can see how Hollywood could make some scenes scarier by bringing them to life .
This is a story about a US Marshall who arrives at a Criminal insane asylum and finds more than he expected . This story is twisted and often left me wondering what was real and what was not . Overall, well done. It kept my interest through then write book , ending with a downhill ride without brakes! Great Psychological thriller !

A Blood Seduction (Vamp City, #1) by Pamela Palmer

Read: 5/10/17
Rating: 3 stars

Review

I had a real hard time rating this one. There are hints of a really good book here, but it really falls flat in terms of the love interest. There is really nothing redeemable or likeable (as of right now) about Arturo. I kept wishing another love interest would pop up for Quinn, but it's obvious that Arturo is it.

What really stinks is that pretty much every scene that doesn't include Arturo really captured my interest. The momentum would build up, and I'd be so close to being hooked, and then Arturo would show up again, and I just wanted to stop reading. The parts I enjoyed were enough that I am interested in trying book 2, but I really hope some changes/development are made to Arturo's character.

Book read: The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart by Mathias Malzieu
Read: 5/11/17
Rating:4 Stars
Review:
The boy with the cuckoo clock for a heart

This story reminded me of a fairy tale type story. A baby is born too sick to survive , so a "witch" midwife saves him by placing a cuckoo clock in his chest in place of his weak heart. Jack has an unusual life and has some hard lessons to learn.

I'm listened to the audiobook version and enjoyed the narrator's Scottish accent, strong but still remained clear to understand .

Cute story, okay ending ... solid 4 stars

Book: A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) by Sarah J. Maas
Date Read: 5/14

Review: This book took me on such an emotional roller coaster. TWO nights in a row I stayed up past 1:00 in the morning. I laughed. I sighed (or maybe swooned). I blushed. I cried. And when I was done I felt wrung out. This may be the first time I've experienced an actual book hangover.

I love the relationships in this series. I love how real they are. This is a loving, real, "family". They live, they love, they fight, they forgive.

And, lastly, (view spoiler)

Ink and Bone (The Great Library, #1) by Rachel Caine

Read: 5/16/17
Rating: 4.5 stars

Review

I was not anticipating that this book would be so hard to put down! After a fantastic prologue, it did have a bit of a slow start (thus the 4.5 star rating), but once the world had been introduced, everything really took off! One of my favorite aspects of the book were the letters from various characters that we see in between chapters. They really served to draw me deeper into the world and actually made me dislike characters before even meeting them, which goes to show how well done they were. I've already requested that my library purchase book 2, so hopefully I'll get to read it soon.

Trinia | 837 comments @Steph Ann - I have got to put this higher on my to read list!

@Vilda - Glad you liked Graveyard! It really was pretty cute... and not scary for the younger generation ;D

message 394: by Laura (new)
