Book: Crystal Cove (Friday Harbor, #4) by Lisa Kleypas
Date Read: 4/6
Rating: 4 Stars

Review: I've enjoyed spending time in Friday Harbor and getting to know the Nolans. This time around we get to hear Justine's story. She's offered advice and support to the women falling in love with the Nolan boys, so it's only right that we get her story to. This one did bring in a lot more of the magical realism elements then are present in the other books. It was a bit heavier than the other stories, and not my favorite of the series. But Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor is a hard one to top!

message 305: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments Trinia, have you read the Parasol Protectorate series? I recommend reading those first, even though they take place later. But you'll probably be okay to start with Etiquette & Espionage, if you haven't read the other yet. E&E is YA, PP is not. :)

Laura | 1168 comments Argh! I started A Court of Mist and Fury this morning. If I don't find anything else quickly I may just restart it, since I'm less than 40 pages in. That's okay, right?

Laura | 1168 comments I hate to make backward progress, so I'll continue my re-read of this series and use In the Hand of the Goddess (Song of the Lioness, #2) by Tamora Pierce for my Assassins book.

I was wondering about that one, i thought "it looks like a good shelf book". Only 40 pages in... I would think it could count....

I haven't read PP, for some reason (probably a sale !) I have all the E&E books. And I was able to borrow the #1 audiobook. I'll have to check out the others for sure!
Thanks for the clarification, I always wondered what the difference was ;)

I was planning to read In the Hand of the Goddess this week anyway. I need it for Amazing Race in AMMP Game Night. So it works out fine.

Probably, but the book was pretty good about "refreshing" my memory. I would love to read the whole series again, all in a row! Rather than over 2 years like I did...

Etiquette & Espionage (Finishing School, #1) by Gail Carriger
by Gail Carriger
Read: 4/13/17
Rating: 4 Stars
Review:
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! This was my first steampunk influenced book and I really loved the creativity! It reminded me of a steampunk Harry Potter. Very well written with good and "bad" characters, I enjoyed the world of Finishing School. My favorite part was imagining the floating school with all of it's mechanics, how cool would that be!

So we soon learn that our main character Sophronia has more talent than either herself or her family realizes. She is soon recruited as a covert to the Finishing school. At this school however, she will not only learn how to be and act like a lady, but maybe she will learn to be a spy or an assassin! What a dream school!
Very well played for future books, without leaving us hanging off a cliff. A quick read with a simple, straighforward plot. Good book for young teens, YA and even us older folks ;)

Review: This is a re-read of this series for me. I'm enjoying it just as much the second time around. This series was first published in the '80s, and it does show. The series was originally intended to be fewer books, but her publishers didn't think kids would read such big books (this was pre-Harry Potter). They do suffer a bit from being chopped up so much. But it's still worth the read. Fantasy, but on a slightly fluffier, quicker-read, note.

I'm glad you liked it. When you do move on to Parasol Protectorate, I like to describe it as Jane Austen-meets steampunk-meets shifters.

Red-Headed Stepchild (Sabina Kane, #1) by Jaye Wells

Read: 4/14/17
Rating: 4 stars

Review

I remembered really liking this first book but never getting around to reading the 2nd, so I decided to try again and reread this one before moving on in the series. This time around, it took me a bit to get into the book. I had a hard time connecting to Sabina, and her personality often felt a bit forced, if that makes any sense at all. Giguhl, however, is awesome, and I hope he appears in future books. About halfway through the book, things started to pick up, and I found it harder to put the book down. While I still don't entirely connect to Sabina, I'm definitely intrigued enough to pick up book 2.

Lol, I'm beginning to feel the effects of the sleep deprivation. This morning, I started the Keurig up without putting a coffee mug in place. Thank goodness for the drip tray, which caught most of the coffee so that only a little spilled onto the counter! Of course, my immediate thought when it happened was, 'What a waste of good coffee' lol.

Review

This book has been on my TBR for a long time, and I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it. My attention was captured with the first chapter, and it didn't really let up throughout the story. There were some slow parts here and there, but even then, I was still interested in what was going on. One thing I really liked was that while Allison does become stronger, faster, etc. when she's changed, she doesn't automatically become a good fighter. She has to actually work at it, and she does make mistakes. I think she's shaping up to be great heroine, and I'm looking forward to seeing how she continues to grow in the next book!

Week 14: Available at Library

Book: The Raven King (The Raven Cycle, #4) by Maggie Stiefvater
Date Read: 4/22
Rating: 4 stars

Review: I'm not really sure what to say about this one. There are sections of the book that I'm still not really sure what happened. Or if anything happened. Some of those sections might have been a dream. But the dreams might have influenced what was going on. Stiefvater's writing has a dream-like quality to it. So in a book about dreamers that made it hard to tell waking from dreaming at times. But I do know the ending (even if I'm not entirely sure how we got there) and I quite enjoyed getting there!

Review: :

OH! Just so good! I now can watch the movie... I firmly believe the book is always better than the movie (except Life of Pi) and I won't watch a movie before I read the book.
so, anyway... this is a must read on any book lover's list. I finally got around to it and loved it! The character development and depth of this book was entrancing. I truly fell in love (and hate) with all of these characters. I felt their emotions like I was there with them. Crying, laughing and hating...
Excellent book about Choosing to do the right thing and stand up for your beliefs rather than follow in line behind others. It's easy to do the easy thing, it's hard to do the right thing.
I listened to the audiobook version and picked up my kindle when listening wasn't possible. One of the best audiobooks I've listened to, great cast of actors/actresses. So well rounded and the voices fit each character perfectly. just great!

Review:
Second time reading this book , and I loved it even more! What an amazing book, the forethought, creativity and intensity... wow!
Katniss is the coolest cat in town. She is bright, strategic and yet innocent. Naive about relationships, especially with boys. I felt her pain and hunger in her everyday life and worse in the games. She stayed loyal to herself without losing sight of the finish.

I want to watch the movie again, like right now! But I do remember how much of a disappointment it was to me. I'm not sure if it's because it all seemed so dreary and sad when you could truly visualize it or because it was slightly different from the book. The movie brought it alive and made you realize how dark and disturbing this story really can be.

My boys (12 & 13 at the time) tried to read this series, both dropped it after book 1. I think a fresh mind sees the violence and doesn't know how to deal with it. This book was a popular 5th & 6th grade book, but I'm not sure it should be. The ability to take a life instead of losing your own is an issue that an adult couldn't even relate to. Deep stuff. I loved the darkness in this book. Being in my 40's , I've been exposed, read or even watched enough evil to separate it and file it away. Not sure so many kids can.

Yet another solid entry in this series. While I felt it did take a bit for the action to get started, once it did, I was hooked and didn't want to put the book down. I'm amazed at how I can still get sucked into this world and not want to leave when we're at book 15 in the series. I'm really intrigued by where the story is going and am looking forward to reading the next installment.
