Shelf #15: kickass heroine

Book: Ruthless People by J.J. McAvoy
Date: 5/1/17
Rating: 3 stars
This was a fun and somewhat vicious story of a an Irish mafia family and an Italian mafia family joined together through an arranged marriage. He is a very cut-throat leader of the Irish family and he has met his match. Lots of chuckles and kept my interest through out. I may even have to read then next book in the series.

I do lots of re-read in audio. It's such a great way to re-read a favorite and still find something new!

This was such a unique and fun read! I loved how Jackaby seemed to have some similarities to Sherlock Holmes, at least from the TV show version of him, yet was his own person in so many ways. Abigail was a great main character and assistant to Jackaby. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series.

This was a very creepy read about a very slick liar dude who wanted to be someone so badly he ended up finding a way to assume his identity so he could live the 'good life'. Crazy how the mc (Tom) really thought this should all work out for him and thought everything he wanted was actually he was 'due' these things. It really makes you think twice about who you let into your life, and how far you allow them.

I decided to try the audio version for my re-read and the narrator did a decent job. I can't believe how much I had forgotten about the beginning of the series. My beloved Brotherhood - raw and oh so very hot. It also made me realize how much the series has changed over the years.
So looking back at the beginning here are a few things that stuck out this time around...
(view spoiler)
Without a doubt The Black Dagger Brotherhood series is a must read. It is still my favorite series and I plan on continuing with the audiobooks.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

After reading, "Wicked Abyss" I can tell the only reason for the Morior is to extend the series. They are adding nothing new whatsoever, besides a new nemesis for Nix (which I guess she needed, after Lothaire got his HEA and has better things to do.) Besides the 'Beauty and the Beast" theme, there was very little new in this book.
Like past books, we have a 5' foot virgin dealing with a 7'foot warrior who has to claim her. **rolls eyes**. The love scenes are super hot as usual - and more explicit than before. At this point, I'm continuing the series because Cole's over the top writing combined with Petkoff's performance is a total blast. At some point Sian climaxed and Petkoff actually bellowed (like it's usually described in the books). I HAD to laughed out loud.

This was an interesting story, with a unique premise. It ended with a cliffhanger and I'm curious to see how the series continues. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a YA or NA novel, but I only recommend it to mature readers due to content.

I'm not a big fan of the steampunk genre but have to say that this one isn't too shabby. Although I begrudgingly picked this book up, I ended up getting quite sucked into the story and enjoying the characters ~ especially the love interest and chemistry! The main character, Lena, made me chuckle quite a few times with her no-fear attitude to life. I also found Will Carter to be quite charming and loved his protectiveness of Lena. I'm marking the next one to read when I'm needing another steampunk for sure!

For Steampunk I'm going to read

God I love this series. I finally got the chance to read (listen) to this book. I have listened to the audiobook version of each book in this series - Renee Raudman is brilliant!
The only problem with having to wait for the next book to come out is that you forget some things and I had to go back a couple of times to figure out who a character was or their significance. I love Kate - her being "forced" to make decisions regarding her upcoming wedding & reception was hilarious. The big fight scene at the end seemed to drag on and I was ready for it to be over with but it had a great ending. Looking forward to the next one!

Rant over! Hahahaha!

Probably because it's sort of a historical with PNR elements and there are probably trains. *rolls eyes*

I was not looking forward to this shelf as Steampunk is not a genre in which I have any real interest. Thankfully two people shelved this book as Steampunk and it gave me the perfect opportunity to read the first book in the Embraced series.
Here we are introduced to a world that has two moons and twice a year the moons eclipse. Any child that is born during the eclipse is said to be "Embraced" and have some type of paranormal ability. Considered to be abominations the Embraced must hide their abilities or they will be killed.
The story was not as lighthearted as the books in the Love at Stake series but I think it has a strong storyline and has a lot of potential to be a successful series. It was a quick read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

I liked the Egyptian aspect to the story, but there honestly wasn't enough of it. I found Cara's behavior unrealistic given her past. Also, I thought it was obvious who was behind the murders so even that part was disappointing. Not a book I'd recommend.

This book is too similar to books 2-3 in the original series. Again, we have two young people moving from place to place, running away from bad guys, jumping from trains, fighting dragons. However, unlike the originals, these felt like teenagers and not like adults who have handled real hardship. Kira is too similar to Mari to make her an interesting character - she's pretty much what she's concerned about...a copy of her mother! I wish the author would have switched around the sexes (the main conflict still would have made sense). That would have made this book a bit more original.
Hoping the next book in the series stands on its own.

3 teams are one way from the win: they need either UF or magic to win.
If neither of these shelves are called, we are in the game for another week.
We have two ways to win and need: shifters, UF, angels (twice).
Angels would be totally awesome for us but let's hope at least for shifters!

So this is our to-do list to make sure we're ready if 'Angels' is called next week. :)
- Get "Owned, Not Read Yet" stamp (just missing Megan's review...)
- Read and review 'Shifters' book by next Wed (All)
- Start looking up "Angels" book so you have your pick ready to go next Wed. :) (All)

The book started off well and I was very interested in it, but then there was a scene that felt out of place with the rest of the story and after that the story seemed different and not a good. Then ending was predictable. Not sure if I'd read more in the series.
