R14: Team #6 ~ Hex Breakers

We're rocking Hexxies!

Shelf #18: shifters
Date finished/Rating: 5/19 ★★★
I read the first 2 books of this series about 3 years ago (not that far away from when I gave up reading BDB) and even though I knew about the similarities between both series, it's even more clear now how this author just copied BDB's style for this series: the ridiculous metaphors/similes, the numerous POVs, the whole brotherhood thang. I have to say though that this series is way stronger on world building and conflict. If only the story wouldn't drag with the interminable internal monologues! I swear that it takes 10 pages for characters to do the most unimportant things and then the author skips important conversations. If it weren't for that, I would rate the books higher because I've actually enjoyed them.

Book: Affliction
Date Finished: 5/19
Rating: 4-stars
I'm still enjoying this series and the interaction between Anita and her "crew". In this story we got to learn a lot about Micah and his family and where he grew up. (And got to fall in love with Micah just a little bit more...) Anita had to work with a female detective who was quite trying on an interesting case. The evolution of that relationship was intriguing. It's hard to believe I'm up the the 23rd book in this currently 26 book series!

Book: Blaze of Memory by Nalini Singh

Review:
I really enjoyed this book. The story is about Dev Santos and Katya Haas. Dev is the Director of the Shine Foundation - the organization who's purpose is to find and protect descendants of the recently introduced "Forgotten". Katya was a scientist who worked with Ashaya in the underground labs. She was thought to have been killed when the lab was destroyed but she was actually taken by Ming LeBon. Over a period of months Ming tortured and all but destroyed Katya's mental stability. Ming created a "trojan horse" with Katya and left her where Dev would find her and take her in which would allow him to access the Shine Foundation.
This book was more emotional - the Forgotten were those who chose to drop from the PsyNet rather than going Silent. With Katya's mind basically broken she did not have the shields to block her emotions. We learn much more about the Forgotten and about why they refused Silence and how they have fought to remain hidden. It was very enjoyable and had a different tone than other books in the series. Characters from previous books made appearances and continued with the theme of the different changeling packs and the "abnormal" Psy being a family that can depend on each other. I highly recommend this series.

This is the last day of the challenge - whatever shelf is called, it will be a win for somebody. :) I hope you have already picked your 'angel's book and are ready to roll if that's the shelf called. :)

This story was okay, but nothing all that great. I don't know if I was supposed to be surprised at one of the reveals in the story, but I had guessed that immediately and thought it took way too long to be revealed. Willow was an okay character, but I did find her annoying at times as well. I don't think I'll continue with this series.

Anybody planning to read the shelf? I will probably only do so if everybody else is also reading...

Good Job!! :D

Looks like the 'fae' spot helps us out for other win possibilities if we get to it... :)
That sounds like my kind of book, DG ~ I'm not hugely into fae reads.

How it Fits: shelved fae 53x
I usually love Jennifer Armentrout but have to admit that the first book in this series seemed really boring until the back half. Needless to say, I was not jumping into the opportunity to read the next book in the series. But lo and behold, the GR gods rolled the dice and 'fae' was the calling. Anyway, maybe it was because I started with the bar set low but ended up really enjoying this installment SO MUCH MORE than the first book and was glad I got the push. Book 1 leaves you hanging and book 2 started off right where it needed to which made for a lot more action and intrigue. Sometimes the fae world building can be too much for me but this one was just right so it wasn't confusing AND it didn't make me fall asleep. It had been over two years since I'd read Wicked so appreciated getting some of the back-story woven in through out the beginning.

Shelf #19: fae
Date finished/Rating: 5/27 ★★★
There are some new twists in Burn but they really didn't do it for me. Instead of 'mates', demons in this book have "anchors" or psychic partners that make them stronger. The relationship needs to be accepted by both and it's not necessary sexual, but your anchor will become a part of your life, like a meddling brother and sister. I get why the author went this way - the business of fated mates feels like a cop-out not to develop a relationship - but this anchor business has the worst parts of a mating (being tied by the universe to somebody you didn't pick) without the cool part (there's only one person in the world that was made for me.)
The conflict in this book is one of the most boring ever: an election! No, I didn't mean an erection... but an actual election with voting and speeches - yawn. The only cool thing in the whole book was his breed of demon.
Not continuing the series.

I still have my angel book lined up... and after we get fae, I think we have some other options for a win too....
fingers crossed!

My angel book work for both so if we make it to next week, I'm set there. :)

Here are some books in the fae shelf in series you already started. :)

(The last is a first in a series but I noticed you are already reading the A&O series which is a companion to Mercy...)

I was just reading a magic book when I saw that... kind of wished I'd saved it but will look to line up another!

Book: When Darkness Ends by Alexandra Ivy
Date Read: 5/30/17

Review:
Good book. I was very happy that the last scene was with them all together toasting to friendship. I have come to realize that when I wait this long to read the next book in the series that I forget who's who and what their purpose is. I know they did something great and their HEAs were wonderful but that's about all I remember. For series like these, IMO, it's better to just binge read the whole series to really get the full effect.

So I guess at this point all we can do is wait to see who wins!
