This is a re-read for me and I liked it just as much the second time around. The Ilona Andrews team consistently pumps out some of my favorite books. This really isn't an exception, though, I think this may be my least favorite from them. That being said, my least favorite from them is still at the top of my list of books read this year. I can't wait to read the next book in the series in May. :)

Review:
My main issue with the first book, was it was a big new world, and while I don't like info dumping, I felt I had a lot of questions. This time, I had visited her website and had the guide to empires and guide to witchery downloaded to my kindle and referred to them on multiple occasions. I shouldn't have to do that. The information should be in the book.
That being said, I really enjoy the series. The author is a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender series and these books were inspired by them. As a big fan of the series, I see the parallels and love it. This book did have some issues in that it split up most of the characters and not all their individual storylines were compelling. Well, Safiya's wasn't. I enjoyed Merik's and loved Iseult's and Aeduan's.
Aeduan is the character I am most intrigued by and the one I really look forward to seeing where he goes in the future. Both him and Merik have obvious parallels to my favorite avatar character, Zuko, but more so with Aeduan.
I'm excited for the next book :)

Review:
Finally finished this series. I felt it was a bit uneven overall with books 2-4 having a common enemy and family that didn't exist in the first one. The first was my favorite, but I still enjoyed the rest. Seeing Jack and George grow over the series was one of my favorite aspects. And now I can move onto Sweep in Peace again, this time knowing who they are!
I did like Charlotte and Richard, Charlotte especially. She had a different background to the female leads of the previous books and I enjoyed reading about her.
I felt the ending was wrapped up a bit too quickly.
I just could never get into that series. I thought the world building was too much.
It was a bit too fantasy for my tastes, though I did read the first 2 of them.

Review: This was book 4 in the Riley Jenson Guardian series. Riley is half werewolf, half vampire. She works as a Guardian for the Directorate, a federal agency that polices supernaturals. In this book, women are being killed. It looks like a serial killer vampire, but Riley discovers that there is more at stake than just killer vamps. I like Riley a lot, though she often has to do things that she would rather not in her job as Guardian. I like Quinn a lot too, but I don't like the way he treats Riley. I'm not as fond of Kellen, who seems a little too tame for Riley, despite being a werewolf. Riley has to make some choices at the end of the book and I'm looking forward to the next book to discover how those choices play out. I still have hopes of a happy ending for Riley.
Sandra I have wondered if I should go back to them. I also stopped after 2 (I think). It's odd bc I like fantasy but the series was heavy fantasy and I didn't like the way it was done.
I had so much fun with that Keri Arthur series. I should get back to it.

Book: Some Kind of Hero by Suzanne Brockmann

Suzanne Brockmann is an all time favorite of mine. She makes me laugh and just feel good. Her characters are well written and feel like real people. She is slower to release books than she used to and I was trying to savor this book. But like all books it ended. It was fantastic. I want to start it all over again.

I used to read fantasy a few decades ago, just don't wanna anymore.

I may have read too many of these books back to back. I probably should have waited to read another BDB book. I was less excited about this book than I was Blood Kiss I enjoyed it and am glad I read it. But will likely wait awhile to do another bdb book. Fun fact - author J.R. Ward and author Suzanne Brockmann (read and reviewed above) are fans of each other's books. :) I love that.

The Hubster reads those & watches the show, so I get a rundown on whats happening without having to read it :D (PS The only fiction books I've ever seen him read in over 40 yrs)
Ha! On both points. Poor guy - too bad he has to wait so long in between books! It's painful. Glad I have something else to read while I wait. I can't imagine if it was the only fiction I read! But it is the rule of series that appeals to so many people. P
As you can tell he's not a reader - watches lots of series on dvd/blu ray though :)
We all do different stuff. My husband is f a big fiction reader either and he has read all of these books too. :)

For mythology shelf, I'm going to read Touch of Frost- Jennifer Estep. I've been wanting to start this series. It is on page 1 of the shelf.
I am trying to decide, it may be one of these two -- but not sure.

I'm really getting into this series. I enjoy this world and a sort of new take on all the different races. It was nice to have a story that wasn't so Raphael and Elena angst. I liked the MCs which is definitely a bonus and am looking forward to reading the next book. :)

As happy as I am to have the different shapes to win since it makes the game last longer, I realized that mythology gives us a 4-in-a-row and finished series would give us the win in a normal game. Of course we have great luck when it doesn't count!
Oh!!I admit to not fully understanding how far away we are. :(
I still can't decide which book.
Each shape needs 11 stamps so I'm not even paying attention to how far/close certain teams are until Week 9ish. I think every space (except corners) count for at least one of the shapes. Our luck that we have gotten two corners so far. I'm also not sure what book. I have three offhand that I know work, but I may pick something else.
Okay I have the image opened up and that makes sense. I wasn't able to understand it before, thank you. Got it that week 9 is the target to for when we begin to run.I have two that will work, but not super inspired. What are your three?

I loved the first short story pre-quel but didn't like #1. But I am still intrigued by this series.
Honestly, #1 was the worst for me. I'm in the minority here, but I liked this one WAY better than the previous books featuring Raphael and Elena.
That is really good to hear. I felt like the pre-quel (this one, I see there are now more than one Angels' Pawn) set up this awesome UF series and then #1 came off like more of a romance. I like romance and PNR, but I really wanted UF based on the prequel.Maybe I will try #2.
Ohhhh....they ARE romances,though. I know what you're saying and this does fall more on the romance side. Though, there are a couple books in the series that fall where you'd like, I think.
The weird thing is, is that I do like romance. Not sure why the romance rubbed me wrong in #1. I plan to try #2, but good to know.

I'll likely do Kate if none of my other books count. Rick Riordan's books are great for mythology. He keep the characters true to the myth while updating it for a modern YA audience. I saw the movie The Lightning Thief first and wasn't too happy since they went the route of having the Underworld = Hell and Hades = the Devil aka the bad guy which is a pet peeve of mine as those are Christian concepts, not Greek. I'm glad I still decided to try the book anyway as it didn't do that at all.
You are right Natalie. I think the movie was not great overall (maybe why they didn't do others?). I thought the change in age of the characters and the adding in the sexual overtones (I don't mind sex, but in this story doesn't fit) just seemed off.I now remember I listened to the audio of #1 and really enjoyed it.
I love Riordan's Greek/Roman series. Have trouble getting into the Egyptian one though. Also enjoying his new Norse series.
