I got through chapter 9 last night and wow you guys weren't kidding about how long chapter 8 was! I don't think I have much to add to the discussion, but I definitely didn't remember (view spoiler)[Simon dying so out of the blue like that. I thought there was scenes where he voiced his worry about turning or maybe visiting Hotel Dumort without going in. I'm probably getting it mixed up with the tv show. (hide spoiler)] I wish they would have continued the movies. This book would be a really good one.

Maddison, I don't think I'm in that group but I'd have to check. I am in like 10 though so I could be lol I think I just get too lazy to check those invite thingies and have seen it a bunch but haven't checked it out yet. Is it fun?

I think that happened in the show because I don't remember that happening in the book and I've only seen the first episode of Shadowhunters. I think that's better that they actually implemented a scene where Simon felt like he was turning because it seemed to out of the blue in the book. I mean we all knew he was going to turn into something but not like that and not that out of nowhere.

Chapter 18 (view spoiler)[ Clary can create ruins. Why are they not capitalizing on this? If I was a Shadowhunter I would have her create a ruin for everything: extreme strength, flight, super speed, talk to animals etc. I'd look like Lil' Wayne when she's done.

Jace: Can practically fly. I wonder what Valentine did to them. Probably demon magic #worsefatheroftheyear.

There is no way Simon is dead. Magnus is my favorite character but I kind of like Simon's wittiness. I might boycott this series if he is.

Imogen Herondale is annoying. Like it's not okay to take out your anger towards parents on their kids. The only reason I really care for her is because she has the same last name as a certain Herondale that everyone seems to love.

I didn't particularly like her but I didn't exactly want Imogen to die.

Alec needs to get over Jace and confess his love for Magnus.

Alright Clary needs to learn how to harness her powers in book 3 because I ready for some Jace and Clary butt kicking.

Finished. Gave this book 4 stars. Don't think I liked it as much as the first time I read it a few years ago, probably because I kept getting it confused with the show. The show's taken over my imagination too, which kind of sucks. At least (view spoiler)[Imogen was a new character, and Madeleine's the one who knows how to wake Jocelyn up. (hide spoiler)] I can't even remember how that worked in the show. One rage I have about the ending is that (view spoiler)[Simon's now alright to just be Clary's friend, and Jace is alright to just be her brother?? Of course Clary wouldn't tell Jace what she wanted (hide spoiler)], because that's what all main characters do and it annoys the crap out of me! Ugh! I'm pleased that (view spoiler)[Valentine didn't give in to the Inquisitor. And I'm pleased that she finally trusted Jace, and that Jace told her from the start what was going to happen. (hide spoiler)] Pretty excited for the 3rd one because I haven't read that one before.

Yes thank you! I totally agree with you about Clary. I feel like they barely touched on her abilities which is disappointing. I get that they're still introducing her abilities but come on! I wish Clare would give us more than that because other than that little tease, Clary's still useless.

Totally agree with everything. I was very satisfied with what Simon decided in the end. I think it was very responsible for him to (view spoiler)[ give Clary up. He realized that Clary will never feel the same way about him and that their friendship was more important than a romantic relationship (hide spoiler)]. I also agree with what happened with Imogen. (view spoiler)[ I hated her and I'm sure everyone else did but I didn't want her to die. There was so much potential in her character development and also to embed her as an ally in the other books but her dying seemed to just get rid of a problem for the author. (hide spoiler)] Annnnndddd Magnus is awesome and even Alec's rubbing off on me now even though he's still a jerk and uptight.

I agree with you about (view spoiler)[ Jace and Simon just being okay with how things ended with Clary. Well for Simon I could relate to. I've seen it happen to my friend and her best guy friend where my friend never felt the same as her best guy friend towards her. But neither of them wanted to throw away years of friendship, so they settled for being just friends. But for Jace, I didn't like how he was suddenly just okay with it because it doesn't fit his character. He's always been the spoiled, get whatever I want or I force things and get what I want anyway type of guy. That whole scene just seemed so out of character. (hide spoiler)]

Considering I've read this series before I should check the spoilers BUT since I'm being a slow poke this time around I will wait until I'm caught up. I've actually been spending time with real people for once instead of reading and I've gotten too far behind! But there is good news: I got City of Heavenly Fire with the gorgeous Sebastian cover for $1.99 today so I'm happy lol I thought we were spending about 2 weeks on each book so I've been taking my time but now that you've all sped past me I'll hurry up and finish. To be honest, I have no idea how many people are even in this thread now =)

I finished City of Ashes yesterday and I agree about liking it better the first time around. If I remember correctly, City of Glass was my least favorite book of the whole series, so I'm hoping to like that one better this time. Clockwork Angel is after that one right?

I think because the book is long our brains are tricked into thinking a lot of time has passed in their world, when really it's been a matter of days. So when they figured out Clary's ability they probably didn't have enough time to really explore what she could do. And if I was them I wouldn't trust the Clave enough to tell them! I remembered the ending probably the best out of all of the books, but I didn't remember (view spoiler)[just how many demons they had to fight and how many shadowhunters died. No one else lives in the Institute so I just kind of forget they aren't the only ones in NY. I also thought it was kind of weird that the big bad demons can die from drowning... (hide spoiler)]
