message 1007: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments I've been completely "off the grid" for over a week. Hubby and I were on a European river cruise down the Danube from Vilshofen, Germany to Budapest, Hungary with stops along the way in Passau and Weisenkirchen (Germany), Linz, Salzburg and Vienna (Austria), and Bratislava (Slovakia). Dream trip!!! Did do a bunch of reading during our travel (no direct flights to or from Myrtle Beach, so with connections, it was about 20 hours each way) but no reviews. Will try to at least get star ratings up in the next day or so, but it will take some work to remember what all I read!!

.. we were (and still are) celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary.

Happy Anniversary -- 40 years is an accomplishment (should Miss Bingley have listed it?) Sounds like a great trip down the Danube!

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments How wonderful... Happy Anniversary... what a marvelous way to celebrate. Welcome back.

Hope your trip is happy -- 19 years is also an attribute of an accomplished lady!

Okay, now I've GOT to read An Impromptu Bridenapping! And congrats on piling on more books, Lenora!

message 1015: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Thank you, Wose and Jeanne! And Marlene! Have a great trip to the land of Anne of Green Gables, and may you and your husband enjoy many, many more wonderful anniversaries!

message 1016: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 313 comments Happy Anniversary Debbie. Sounds like you're having a wonderful time!!

message 1017: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Thanks, Teresa. I'm home now, trying to shake off the jetlag. Our anniversary itself is actually August 13, so the trip was just a little early but it gave us the best prices then. Now I'm in the middle of unpacking, doing laundry, in and out of Goodreads to see what I've missed, etc, etc. . . .

*sigh* Real life is SO overrated!!

message 1018: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Um, that would refer to the unpacking and laundry parts, not the GR part!!

message 1019: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments Debbie, Happy Anniversary. Your trip sounds fantastic - glad you arrived home safe and sound what with all we hear about certain problems. Take your time - the books are there when you are ready. Get enough rest, please. We celebrate 49 years on the 31st.

message 1020: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Once again, you're ahead of me!!

Seriously though, congratulations! Hope you and your lifelong love are planning some special celebration.

message 1021: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 364 comments 49! Awesome!

message 1022: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 313 comments Don't think I'll ever have those brilliant celebrations. I was married six years in January last but we've been together thirty years since last April. This is my second marriage. After that one I was in no hurry to do it again. But eventually my lovely 'second husband' persuaded me it was the right thing to do for the children. Just to have everything legal and sorted for them for when we finally leave this planet. It hasn't made any difference to me. I've always felt married anyway and somehow April has always been our 'anniversary'!!

message 1023: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments A very good way to look at it.

message 1024: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 313 comments I think so Sheila. We've had some ups and downs, like anyone, but they've been the best thirty years of my life. My previous, very brief, marriage was hell on earth. You appreciate a lot of things after that.

message 1025: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments : ^ )

message 1026: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 364 comments Congratulations on your 30/6 years!! I can't imagine having a difficult marriage. I am flabbergasted at how many college friends have divorced. We got married before most of them. God keeps our marriage strong, surely.

message 1027: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Teresa, 36 years and counting is worth celebrating when you still love with each other. You and your "second husband" ought to pick a date, whether it's from your wedding or from when you first moved in together. It's great to have a day specifically set aside to reflect on all your good moments together and appreciation for each other. I think celebrating anniversaries are almost as important as regular "date nights" even when you're at your busiest with kids and careers!

message 1028: by Anji (new)

Anji | 275 comments Seems like it's a month for anniversaries. Like Debbie and her husband, me and mine will also celebrate 40 years of marriage and it's exactly a week after theirs. Not sure what we're doing on the day yet, probably just a nice meal out somewhere with family. No big trip planned, saving that for hubby's 70th next year.

Congratulations to you all, Debbie, Teresa and Sheila.

Mary | 709 comments Teresa, you and your husband have celebrated thirty years of togetherness in April? Wow! That's wonderful! Congrats! In ten years' time ye'll be celebrating forty years!
You said you're married six years, but I bet,in your heart, you've always felt married. Maybe it's more a state of mind than a piece of paper and a ring? Not my humble opinion!

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments Seems like many of us are in the 40+ year marriage group and that should encourage the younger ladies to hang in there. Teresa we wish you all the best the future has to hold for you and yours. Blessings my dear.

message 1038: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments I would encourage all married couples to attempt to work any difficulties out but I also know that there are times when a couple should just not be together. I will not judge. My parents got divorced because he was physically and emotionally abusive towards her.

message 1039: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Sheila is absolutely correct. All 3 of my brothers divorced and (like Teresa) found married bliss with their second wives. Considering all the studies showing our brains aren't fully developed until we're about 25, it's amazing that any couples who marry before that age stay together!

message 1040: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Hey, Anji! Congratulations on your upcoming 40th!

message 1041: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Mary, thank you for your emoji-filled sentiments!!

message 1042: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments So, Jeanne, while we're on the subject and you opened the door, when's your wedding anniversary? What number are you up to? Inquiring minds want to know!!

message 1043: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments You are right Sheila... no one deserves to suffer. There are times when it is necessary to walk away from something that is just wrong. Especially when someone's safety is in question and/or if children are involved. I am sorry about your parents.

My comment was not meant to keep someone in an abusive situation. I was aiming for those who change partners as often as they change their clothes due to a minor conflict.

message 1044: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments In October we will hit the 46 years mark. He is a semi-Darcy type, taciturn and quiet, melancholy, Taurus, accountant, pre-Hunsford proposal attitude and opinions. It is amazing we ever got together. I'm polar opposite of him... Leo and sanguine, but, that is what makes the world go round.

message 1045: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments I am also the opposite of my husband but you do remember that they say opposites attract. It is as we have aged that the differences have been more obvious. He could sit and watch athletic games in person or on TV or go to games or play golf just about 24/7! He has no interest in reading or in the arts (movies, plays, concerts) so I do my thing and he does his. We don't argue about it...it just how it is. He can tell you that Jane Austen is my favorite author.

message 1046: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments Your hubby is one up on mine. He has no idea who my favorite author is. He just knows I'm into reading and writing reviews. While he's on the computer checking out the scores and watching sports videos and clips, I'm on my computer reading and writing reviews. He's content and so am I. We meet in the middle and have our time together.

message 1047: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments Grinning - yes, I understand. My husband does acknowledge that he enjoys my cooking still...praises my meatloaf! The way to a man's heart....as they say.

message 1050: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 313 comments Sheila I know EXACTLY your mother felt!! My husband now and I get on really well. We clicked the minute we met even though neither of us was looking for a serious relationship at the time. I moved in six weeks later. He's a reader too but doesn't get a lot of time for it. Even though he never read Austen he love's the dvds of them. He's always quoting Mr Bennett.
We both love watching sport of all types. We go to see our local soccer team as often as we can. We were both really amazed how much we had in common. Don't get me wrong, it's not total bliss all the time but it's pretty damn near.
