Wayne | 3 comments When asked about her favorite book growing up, a family member recalled a book about a girl captured by and then living amongst Indians who gave her an "Indian" name. Apparently there are several such books published. The distinguishing feature here is the captured girl constantly repeating her birth name to herself in the fear that she would forget it.

Any recollections would be much appreciated!

MomToKippy | 62 comments This happened in A Taste for Nightshade but this is a recent book - I see now from your message that it came out a while ago.

What years/decade was this?

Wayne | 3 comments The family member most likely read the book sometime around 1960-1965 (when she was 8 to 13 years old). Thanks.

``Laurie (laurielynette) Could your family member have some of the facts confused? Because this is also reminding me of the book:

The Courage of Sarah Noble

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments In Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison (first published 1941), her mother tells her not to forget her own name or her family's or how to speak English, so she repeats her family's names and her own when she gets some alone time. Could it be that book? It's quite a popular one.

MomToKippy | 62 comments Interesting, in the book I mentioned, the character that this happens to is called Mary Jebb. Maybe the author borrowed from the older story. hmmm

Jen | 148 comments Many versions of the Mary Jemison story. If the one you want has a scene of the Indians stripping off her blue linen clothes and watching them float down the river, you want this version:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

If it has a graphic scene of her family being scalped, you probably want this one: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

The first book is my personal favourite of all the Mary Jemison books.
