ABANDONED. YA Girl captured by Indians repeats her original name to herself so she won't forget it

When asked about her favorite book growing up, a family member recalled a book about a girl captured by and then living amongst Indians who gave her an "Indian" name. Apparently there are several such books published. The distinguishing feature here is the captured girl constantly repeating her birth name to herself in the fear that she would forget it.

Any recollections would be much appreciated!

What years/decade was this?

The family member most likely read the book sometime around 1960-1965 (when she was 8 to 13 years old). Thanks.

In Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison (first published 1941), her mother tells her not to forget her own name or her family's or how to speak English, so she repeats her family's names and her own when she gets some alone time. Could it be that book? It's quite a popular one.

Interesting, in the book I mentioned, the character that this happens to is called Mary Jebb. Maybe the author borrowed from the older story. hmmm
