Thanks! I am really enjoying the group so far, and a reading challenge is right up my alley. ;-)

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Linda Grace wrote: "Lydia, I will accept this book for the task if you will explain to me why you believe it to be horror/gothic. Until then, I will only count your other points."

Is it really classified as fantasy? I found it to be in the genre of horror that I would never read. The graphic descriptions did not feel like any fantasy which I do read. This was far more descriptive than Meyer's series.

If you don't include it, that's fine. I need a recommendation then, since I don't understand what you might classify as horror/gothic. Anyone can respond under tasks so we don't take up space here.

Thank you Lydia, I will count it. I have just never read it, but I will take your word for it that it's what you would call horror/gothic.

Thanks, Linda. To everyone else, I'm still interested in any recommendations so I can get a feel of how these are classified. Ah, it's the librarian in me! lol

I think horror tends to be anthing you would read and get that "don't go up the stairs" feeling -- you know somethings lurking, or people are going missing, or there's a killer or monster of some sort. Things that can't really be classified elsewhere (like sci-fi or fantasy, etc), like RL Stine and Christopher Pike. Maybe even to an extent, LJ Smith.

message 159: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree Misty. Those are the kind of books I would say were horror/gothic as well. The kind of books that I don't like to read because I can't fall asleep right after reading it. :) I'm such a girl...

Mandy (mldavisreads) | 210 comments So I read Dread Locks for task 4.20 (176 pages). I asked for recommendations because I shy away from horror. After reading this, I will try to be more open to the genre, but in general I stick to the avoidance rule-- I don't like spine tingling or stomach dropping or any such odd sensations... same reason I avoid rollercoasters.

I didn't really care for it! I really really enjoyed the Graveyard Book, so I was very hopeful for Neverwhere. The storyline was cool and of course he's a great writer, but it just didn't seem to grab me. I did read it on my Kindle though, which I have come to realize really makes a difference. I'm not sure why I had to spend $300 to realize how much I love reading books! lol...

Shanna | 51 comments Sorry Linda Grace, it is Chosen by P.C. Cast

message 180: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments I want to break down and buy a Kindle, but I won't for two reasons: 1) I really don't need a Kindle, or need to rebuy books to go on it; 2) the fact that I am broke helps with the not breaking down part. Now if the Kindle fairy would drop one in my lap, that'd be a different story.

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I'd like to switch around a book if possible...

3.10 One-Eyed Cat by Paula Fox (224 pages)
3.15 A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck and A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park (192 pages)

Commonalities for 3.15 - While the books are set in completely different eras and locations, I did find a few similarities between them. Both books centered around displaced characters. They were both "oddballs" in their communities, and even though their caregivers were brusque on the surface, they were cared for inside.
