He yawned, barely listening.

He sighed. "Your life is on the line of your choice."

"You almost make it sound as if you care."

"Oh, I do. Any asset is valuable."

"And that is why you're intending to leave me here to die?"

"If you're not an asset, you're not valuable."

"I see."

"Good." He waved slightly. "I'll see you tomorrow."

"Wonderful."

The headmaster laughed as the doors shut stonily.

He sighed, leaning back against the cold hard stone. This was going to be a long night.

Anya dreamed about him in worry, all the night long.

He managed to sleep, but not very much.

The headmaster was back at midday the next day.

He remained with his eyes closed.

"Wake, Adam, I have a list of a few more dragons. By tomorrow, you will have heard of all eligible ones."

"Wonderful," he muttered.

"Anya is walking. She searches for you."

"And have you told her that I'm currently locked in a dungeon?"

"Oh, I haven't met with her at all. I hear things." He spoke mysteriously, though he actually could feel the motives of those under the influence of the bond, if he focused. "Ah, the dragon healer confined her to the infirmary."

"I see."

"She's entertaining to focus on, when I have nothing better to do." He meant to anger Adam.

[mels]

He didn't reply, but his fingers clenched around the chains a little.

"Of course," he taunted, preying on Adam, "Even as a little girl, she was very interesting, one of my first playthings. I suppose I've kept her alive and strengthened her only out of sentimentality."

"You almost killed her yesterday." His eyes were glinting strangely, and he was hardly containing his temper.

"Only I didn't," he laughed dryly.

[mels]

"She was on the floor unconscious, close to death."

[Ilsa, Veratri, Ember, Nigethion, Shinrai, Anya, Adara]

"I could sense her soul. She could have outlasted an hour more of my torture."

[mels]

"You told me she was dying."

[Ilsa, Veratri, Ember, Nigethion, Shinrai, Anya, Adara]

"Oh, she was. Any more and she would have died, but she could have withstood an hour more before she left us. Harming her is strangely pleasurable. It's like ripping the wing off of a canary."

"But now that I'm here, you won't hurt her again."

"Unless you disobey or refuse to bond, no, and as long as she's obedient as well."

"That wasn't what we agreed to previously."

"I can't have her disobeying," he shrugged. "She belongs to me, but I won't harm her to that extent again, with any luck."

"As j said before, you can't own a person."

"I cannot own her soul, her will. But her body is mine, forced to do my will."

"No."

"What do you mean by that?" he asked, preparing the list of dragons, purposefully taunting him.

"I mean no."

"What's the meaning of this negative?" he asked lightly.

"It means no. Are you familiar with the term, headmaster?"

"I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with."
