Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments Hey guys, we are thinking of going to Mexico for a holiday or Texas.

Where can you recommend. In late June.

Last year we went to New York and Florida. But I remember someone was talking about Cozumel. Has anyone been?is there a lot to do? How long should we stay? and where? I only have 2 weeks holls.

message 911: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments A few people in Australia has said its dangerous. is that true?

message 912: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) I’ve been to Cancun twice and LOVED it. Stayed at a beautiful resort, ate wonderful food. While I was there, we went to Cozumel for a day shopping and snorkeling trip. It was also beautiful, but we didn’t go the resort area—we went to a village. But that was 20 years ago and Cancun has exploded with tourists, so If I were to go back, I’d definitely stay in either Cozumel or Isla Mujeres.

message 913: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments Would you stay at Cozumel or near Cancun and day trip? As I am a crazy tourist and have 5 things planned a day. Or would you go for a couple of days and then back to the main land.? Would you catch a boat or fly?

message 914: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Uh... from what I've heard, it is dangerous now. I used to go every once in a while with my family just to do some day shopping and see the cliffs. However, since then, it's gotten really bad in some areas. Honest truth, I'm mostly scared as the cartel are so strong there. I would rather avoid it.

message 915: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments Tessa, what is the Cartel? If we went to Yucatan peninsula? I was thinking of taking my 3 girls with us. They are older.

Cozumel is amazing and never dangerous. Cancun sucks. Skip it. I'm very familiar, feel free to contact me. We live in central Texas, halfway between San Antonio and Austin. Great location to do Schlitterbahn and surrounding areas and you're welcome anytime.

And if you decide on cozumel use cheapcaribbean.com. We like the Iberostar Cozumel. Great place and all inclusive.

I will say Cancun/Cozumel is not a place you explore outside the area. Cozumel is an island so it's fine but you don't want to explore Cancun. Also ceck out Isla Mujeres. Safe, gorgeous, but more $$$ than Cozumel.

I know there are safer places in Mexico, though I can't say which. The Cartel is basically a big mob type group that reside in Mexico. The stories I've heard from people from there are pretty insane. However, some areas are considered safer, away from the border. I'm just clueless which ones.

The islands are the safest bet. I'd still go to Cancun (it's just personal preference that I don't), but I wouldn't do the excursions. Anytime we go, we stick to the resort. There's plenty to do there. Although to be honest, coming from Australia, I'm not sure why anyone would want to go. I'd imagine Australia to be just as beautiful if not more so beach-wise. Especially since you don't get that Mexican feel at the resorts. We have more of that here than they have there.

That being said, I wouldn't: stay on the east coast, rent a car, do an excursion or leave the resort--unless I'm on an island like Cozumel or Isla Mujeres. In those cases, I feel safe no matter what. The last time my husband went, he rented a jeep and they went all over the place--on the island.

Susan (sknelson) | 2 comments A young family from Iowa was found dead just last week while on Spring break while visiting Tulum. There have been murders on the beach recently. Also two weeks ago a bomb exploded on one of the ferrys killing 5 tourists, so yes violence has ramped up because there are two drug cartels fighting over territory. It's been in the news. I believe you can google it. I would look for a safer location at this time.

Thanks Robin, I think it was you who was talking about going there maybe a year ago. But, I was trying to get the feel of the country you know, food, culture and atmosphere by not just staying on the island. Australia does have fantastic beaches so It doesn't have to be beachy. Where would you suggest. Fast paced is good. Shopping is good, we like visiting places. And learning about the country. New experiences. 2 of the girls finish their Uni courses so it's probably our last fam holiday. I thought maybe New Orleans.
I really thought Mexico looked fantastic. I was so excited. Not to sure what to do now. It's about 20 hours from Melbourne. So it's a long flight.

Melinda what about something once in a life time like Machu Picchu or the Galapagos?

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments We only have under 2 weeks so I think to visit that area we may need longer.

Maybe something in North America. There's so much to see and so little time. Decisions, decisions.

Then I definitely would not suggest Mexico. We have friends who have a house in Merida and I hear that is a safe area, but I still wouldn't be comfortable exploring outside of it. Have you considered Costa Rica? You'll get the Latin America experience, the beaches, and the jungle all in one. We stayed about 4 days near Arenal (volcano) and did ziplining in the jungle, then drove several hours and stayed on a black sand beach for 4 more. It was amazing. You can get a GPS with your rental and drive yourself if you want. The beach was nice, but I'm a jungle girl. If we go back I'd spend the whole time there.

Robin Hill (robinhill) | 1528 comments The closest/safest place to get a true feel for Mexican heritage is probably San Antonio in Texas.

message 934: by Susan (new)

Susan (sknelson) | 2 comments I have friends who just returned from Costa Rica a few days ago and loved it. They said it was like Mexico 20 years ago and the people were genuinely nice and the service was amazing. They said they would go back in a heartbeat.

I have a loved one who just left this morning for Mexico on their honeymoon who is fully aware of the situation there. They will be staying on property at all times and it isn't their first time in Mexico. As far as the family dying of gas, I don't believe it for one second. For one thing it's hotter than hell down there and most of the places you rent brb's don't have air conditioning off property. Even the nicest top shelf properties only have air conditioning in the rooms not the hallways so who is going to be firing up a stove to cook? Yes, I'm sure someone could bump the controls but hmmm when their have been numerous murders and I was just there 2 summers ago with my girlfriends and saw some very very sketchy things going on and I stayed at a 5 star 5 diamond resort. I have been numerous times and I will tell you it scared me. For the first time I saw locals being allowed into the property to party and they had money. That has never happened before. EVER!!! I also saw a very attractive girl pass out who was seemingly fine one minute and then she was carried off. The morning we were leaving we had to get up around 3 am to head to the airport and witnessed some very nefarious stuff going on with men and I was never so happy to see our driver and get out of there. I could get very detailed on the stories but I don't want to right now. I have friends who have had to pay ransom for their kids.

Cabo is fun but I've heard the cartel is moving in there also but I have friends who are still going and I probably would go again until American's and shootings start showing up in the clubs there.

If you decide to go to New Orleans the Florida panhandle beaches in Destin, Rosemary beach are the prettiest beaches in America. They are as soft and white as powdered sugar and the water is warm and emerald green. You could see the Blue Angels fly in Pensacola where the are based. Lot's of fun things to do. The beaches are just a 3-4 hour drive from New Orleans.

Tessa | 1761 comments Robin, I've always wanted to visit Texas. I've only been in it for a lay over, and driving through at the age of one during a lightening storm.

I'm no help. I've only been to Florida, Nevada, California (of course), and Mexico. Which, after typing that, I really need to plan a vacation after my niece's wedding. lol Some new state to visit.

message 938: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments No sure what we are going to do. But I will keep you posted.

But we are not going to Mexico.
Thankyou for all the info.
Also Costa Ricca is too expensive for the 5 of us from Australia so can’t go there.
We went to New York and Florida last year. Sooo, I still would like to go some where else in the USA.
But my daughter has her formal on Thursday so we are organising that at the moment since I ordered a dress online at the beginning of March and it hasn’t arrived. Maybe a backup plan is needed.

As long as the cofffee is good. My hubby will be happy anywhere.
I will keep you updated.

message 939: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) Haha, Melinda. I remember you mentioning hubs's coffee last year. That's hilarious!

message 940: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments He's the connoisseur of coffee.

Has all these places marked in Melbourne that makes the best coffee and gets the coffee run on his way to work.

So as long as we can find good coffee. He can be kidnaped or whatever. But if he gets his coffee he'll be happy. 😜😜

Anna Penwick (annapenwick) | 166 comments So I've been busy lately and not able to read much. I forgot to check on my library holds.

Naturally several holds arrived at the same time. I now have: Dearest Ivie (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #15.5) by J.R. Ward , Lake Silence (The Others, #6) by Anne Bishop , Burn Bright (Alpha & Omega, #5; Mercy Thompson World - Complete, #15) by Patricia Briggs , Gone Rogue (Wires and Nerve, #2) by Marissa Meyer , A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas .

My copy of Obsidio (The Illuminae Files, #3) by Amie Kaufman also arrived in the mail.

Now the problem of which one do I read first?

message 948: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) Oh yeah. We have the thread but still need to do the COMAF BR. I almost forgot!

Butttt...Dearest Ivie is short--only 145 pages. I'd 'get that out of the way' first.

Anna Penwick (annapenwick) | 166 comments I want to read all of them now! I have started COMAF. Tamlin has already made me mad. All of these authors are among my favorites. I'll end up reading all of them too fast then I'll come back and whine about not knowing what to read next.
