Tuesday Teaser - tempt us with your current read!

Hamish Macbeth has heard reports of a haunted castle- eerie noises and lights at night have the local villagers on edge. Hamish has gone up to the castle to spend the night:
After a good dinner, Hamish and Charlie settled into their sleeping bags on the floor of the tower. A loud whistling and moaning started up...

"It was clear from the start that they were not like other children, therefore Susanna felt she had no choice but to set down rules. No walking in the moonlight, no Ouija boards, no candles, no red shoes, no wearing black, no going shoeless, no amulets, no night-blooming flowers, no reading novels about magic, no cats, no crows, and no venturing below Fourteenth Street. Yet no matter how Susanna tried to enforce these rules the children continued to thwart her. They insisted on being unusual."

"Hector traced a circle around a mirror, then another, then a third, and the mirror began to spin with him. Then a second mirror spun and a third, all perfectly synchronized. He stood in the middle of a circle of whirling glass, the mirrors shifting with the music. they were "dancing", as the man had promised."

The doorman hailed a cab for her when she left the apartment and she gave the driver an address on the Upper West Side. It was in a seedy neighborhood, and she noticed the driver looking at her admiringly in the rearview mirror. She was pensive as they sped through Central Park. The weather in New York had turned chilly two weeks before, the leaves had turned, and the last of them were falling off the trees.

My teaser is from:

Setting: 4 friends (3 female, 1 male) have gone on a 3 day cruise from Perth to Albany to celebrate 10 years since their final School excursion there. The 3 women all have a secret that they have kept from the others - the reader gets to know all the secrets straight up - but each of the character's are either revealing theirs to each other one by one, or, in the case of Abbie, have overheard a conversation and come to their own conclusion.
Ricki didn't sleep much at all. Her brain wouldn't stop. It tried to imagine Abbie sick. Abbie's funeral. A world without Abbie. It was a dark, terrible place and she pictured it all as she tossed and turned, her bed resembling a teenager's room by morning

That one's on my annual challenge list for WA. Sounds good!

Here's my contribution from my current read:

"Books give us the benefit of a lot of people's experiences," she said slowly. "They give us more options to choose from - more ways to live - than we could ever find on their own."
Soon they pulled up to the shore, tying the boat to a rough hewn timber jetty with big tree posts to hold it up. It looked strong enough to withstand a wild winter storm. They left the wharf and went in single file up the path.

Oops! I forgot too. Here's mine:)
" I thought maybe Mum would be upset with me because I took so long to find her. Silly really, but I'd been planning to run away for years, first from the convent and then from the farm and I sort of felt she must've known that and, because I hadn't done it I had let her down. It was seven years you see from the time I was taken to the time Gwen took me back there,"

The Cat, the Crow, and the Cauldron: A Halloween Anthology by Joe DeRouen

Oh, I have a story in that one, Owl!

Here's my review
This teaser was another good one in the book. I think it scared me as I'm afraid of heights!
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

When I was invited to contribute, I wasn't quite sure what to write about, so I started with Anna, who, like me, hadn't really experienced what Halloween is like. Then it took off :-)

...When she opens the front door, there's a strange man standing on the front porch. She's so startled she almost screams. But the man standing on her doorstep, while unexpected, doesn't appear to be threatening...

Almost too late, he noticed that the red splotches coming through the tissue paper were not part of the design. As he unwrapped it his eyes were unable to comprehend the sight of the finger within. His mouth falling open in a sudden gasp, he dropped the parcel to the floor."Melissa?" he croaked in utter disbelief.

Love the cover on the book Leonie!

And Fire Came Down by Emma Viskic
"She'd been gone for four months now, had left just as he'd begun to see glimpses of her old self. She'd been hurt because of him. Tortured. Her arm cut and fingers broken, her blood flowing from her veins and pooling on a dusty warehouse floor. All while He'd stood and watched, helpless."
When the first squad car arrived five minutes later, McLean was sitting on the stone steps outside, breathing the fresh city air and trying not to think about what he had seen. He set the two PCs to secure the area, knowing full well that the back door was locked, and carried on waiting for the police doctor to arrive. Meanwhile the SOC van rumbled up the street and half a dozen officers piled out.

My teaser:
...Ian shuddered at the thought of facing not one hellhound but two. And what if they didn't find the she-beast and her litter soon? That could mean that a whole pack of wild beasts would soon be terrorising the area...

She swallowed down the grizzle that started up in her throat whenever Gareth got annoyed. She'd read an article in a magazine only last week, warning girls about the signs of being in a controlling relationship; constantly walking on eggshells, afraid of saying the wrong thing. It was worrying.
"I'm home ,Nana,"I said . Then I looked into the beautiful eyes of my small son. "I'm home Ali. I promise you."
And I always keep my promises.
Mary, Mary by James Patterson
And it will be interesting to see if he keeps this promise because his track record isn't that good.

I'm between books at the moment so the one I'm starting next is Holiday in Death by J.D. Robb
She dreamed of death.
The dirty red light from the neon sign pulsed against the grimy window like an angry heart. Its flash turned the pools of blood glistening on the floor from dark to bright, dark to bright, slicing the filthy little room into sharp relief, them damning it to shadows.
My last for October challenges - I'd better hurry!!

Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl by Stacey O'Brien

It's very enjoyable and should have no problem finishing except that I've got a Dr appointment today.
I think we all forgot this today!!!
Whatever little bit of luck I had when it came to the case vanished on the tense ride back to the Sheriff's station. There was a wreck on the road that blocked both lanes and created a half-hour traffic jam. Joyce promised to hold a deputy in the station to take our statements, but with the long wait as they cleared the wreck, he had to return to duty.

Mine is from Blind Justice by Bruce Alexander
"There was of course a fourth member to our party. He was seated quietly behind the desk, his head thrown back, a quantity of his blood spilled out over his shirt and waistcoat."

"When there are serious matters to discuss, Austen women walk. And it has the side benefit of keeping our figures so light and pleasing."

Austin and Portia were boyfriend and girlfriend at college - and then she disappeared without trace. Then a year later Austin gets a letter from her saying "We need to talk."
SO, my Wednesday teaser (LOL!) is:
...In particular, he noticed one young mother pushing a baby carriage. There was something about her that was familiar. Then she was close enough so he could see her clearly. Austin's heart jumped to his throat. That woman - that young mother - was his Portia!..
I wonder what she has to tell him? LOL
I am reading a romance (did you guess?) it is

LOL!!!

"...Oscar was one of the sweetest people Lucy had ever met. He was always cheerful, with a smile and welcome for everyone in the library. She hoped that wherever he spent the rest of his time he had people around him who showed him the cared, even if it was just a random nod from a stranger in the street...
I've got that one to read soon Sally :)
One More Song by Nicki Edwards
Still, he couldn't wait to see Eddie's reaction to his surprise. Crossing his fingers that she'd love it, he grabbed the Santa outfit from the car. He was heading to the toilet block out the back of the hall to get changed when Simon pulled up with the float.
'Great timing,' Harry said. 'Thanks for doing this mate.'
'All good. I needed to get out of the house for a bit too,' Simon said.
'How's everyone doing?'
When Harry left, the mood was as tense as if a thunderstorm was brewing and everyone was sitting and waiting in expectation for the deluge of rain that was guaranteed to come. After the most sombre Christmas breakfast he could ever recall, Harry had escaped to the stables to think.
