Looking for something new

This might be a weird request, so I hope I can adequately explain what i'm trying to find. I'm looking for new books and genres outside of what I normally read. I want to break out of my little reading bubble. I read a lot of magical realism, gothic novels, and memoirs. What are some of your favorite books outside of these genres? Any suggestions welcome for series or stand-alones. Thanks in advance for the help!

Boy's Life might be a good for you, if you haven't read it already. It has a little bit of everything you like, but it's also a few steps outside of all of those genres, if that makes sense. It reminds me of Dandelion Wine in some respects.

Here are some horror titles. With Halloween just around the corner i thought you might find them interesting :)
Out of Tune, Out of Tune: Book 2. I just read these and loved them. They're horror/fantasy stories based on folk songs. I liked the second book better but they were both really good.

What about classics? I always like to recommend Jane Austen and her novels of humour and manners.

Something that I found totally interesting (and well outside of my normal reading interests) was The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Despite the title, this is a non-fiction. I read it on the recommendation of a friend that I'd gone to school with who insisted that it would answer a few of the questions we used to ask each other back in Organic Chemistry.

Perhaps you should look at good reviewers bookshelves to find new books. Compare libraries to see where your tastes intersect & then look at their favorite books & read the reviews.

I just started reading Boy's Life over the weekend and I'm really liking it so far!

Preston and Child's Pendergast series, or any of the ones they write separately, though one, and I can't remember which, I started, and then quit almost immediately, because he put the Andromeda Galaxy in the constellation of Orion, and my astronomy background just said NO!

Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart is one of my favorite books of all time. It's set in an ancient mythic China and follows an enormous peasant named Number Ten Ox and a sage with a slight flaw in his character named Master Li as they travel the length and breadth of China in order to save the children of Ox's village from a horrible poison and gradually come to realize that they are pawns in the hands of gods who are attempting to set right an injustice that is thousands of years old. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me.
